@TheeMikeHoncho Slick Ric was his own attitude era. He was the man, especially in the early to mid eighties wrestling in the NWA later WCW. Saturday night it was must see TV on TBS. Stylin and profilin, the one, the only Slick Ric Flair.
Hogan was nothing more than a juiced up weightlifter and a social butterfly with no class and no wrestling skill or cardiovascular conditioning whatsoever. Flair would have easy beaten him by submission via a figure four leglock with 10 minutes, then still had the stamina to give Linda Hogan an all night ride on Space Mountain. IMO being known by non-wrestling fans is in no way a benchmark for success as a pro wrestler. Could you imagine Hogan ever coming out in a sport coat and alligator shoes?
Now this is The Real Ric Flair Stylin and Profilin. at his best. Not the TNA Flair who shouts he's GOD and acts like a lunitic. The TNA Flair is a shell of his former self.
Ric Flair, after a woman ask him to take his clothes off "not today, im styling and profiling....huh....you just be glad im here looking the way i look"-
Is that Tony freakin Shivonie with that ridiculous moustache? Hilarious! God I love 70s and 80s promos. The clothes and the hair are beyond awesomeness
Wrestlers today should be required to watch these Ric Flair promos so they can see how it's done. No one could cut um like Flair. Flair was to wrestling what Richard Petty was to NASCAR. Hogan was good shoot but lets face it, he was very PC for McMahon and the WWF. The 6-14 year olds watched Hogan and played with their wrestling dolls. When you grew up you wanted to see someone wear the "crimson mask" and "walk that isle" and talk about how many rolexes they had.
@djfakt What's wrong with calling Ric Flair a genius? A genius is someone with outstanding achievements within a particular field. Mozart was a genius in Music, Einstein in physics. Or somebody like let's say Robert DeNiro in the art of acting. And Wrestling, wether you like it or not, can also be seen as an artform. And Flair is one of those who did outstanding thins in this business.
@Vader58 Bullshit Hulk Hogan was. As much as i like Ric Flair and as much as i dislike Hulk Hogan. You can't not admit that when Hulk Hogan was hot there was no other bigger wrestler than Hogan. If you ask a non wrestling fan who is Hogan they would know if you asked who is Flair they wouldn't.
Maybe Hogan's name is more instantly recognizeable, and there are reasons for that. Hogan was the champ in the biggest wrestling company in the world for quite some time, while Flair spent several years in the NWA. Hogan might be slightly more recognizable, but as soon as you go "WOOOOO!" people know who you're talking about.
@Karasuman68 I disagree if you wen't to a non wrestling fan and wen't WOOOO they would look at you stupid. If you went up to a non wrestling fan and said Hulk Hogan they would say "the wrestler?" Thats my point. Just to let you know my favourite of all time was Shawn Michaels so this is not some Hogan fan boi shouting he's the best he's the best. I even appreciate and like Ric Flair but when Hogan was hot nobody in the wrestling industry has beaten that.
This is why Flair is the best ever at cutting promos. First, he puts himself over. Then he puts over his opponent, showing them respect. Whether it's Race, Dusty, Magnum TA, Nikita, Billy Jack, Brody, Tully, Arn and Ole (in the Horsemen) or Windham, Sting or Luger, Flair would always give props to his opponent, and it was real. Finally Flair would drop that charisma and humor in there that would have everyone of us hanging on his every word. That's why Flair is the best.
@cocoabononohead wow.. me too i cant get enough... seriously give me the money and chance and id start my own wrestling.. and go back to basics and get charisma like this... and cut out the BS of todays wwe.. and i guarantee ppl would like it much bettter... ! i was always under the suspension of disbelief that this was like a league and it was goal to be the best and show toughness.. even if not real at least they had u think it wasnow its just predctabl soap opra and pyro tchnics and divas
@arlichar11 you would need a talent like Ric Flair for your own wrestling promotion, and I just don't think he's out there.....Flair was one of a kind
@ewoldt true... but hes not only guy in history to make wrestling succesful... im not sayin to copy what he did either, imjust sayin we need to cut the BS we got now...like i said i coud watch this over and over 4 hrs. but cant watch but about 1o mins of wwe without disgust...
@arlichar11 definitely do not try to copy him.....what made that era of wrestling the best was that the wrestlers made themselves.....I've read that Bruiser Brody would always exit the ring on the opposite side that he had just thrown out his opponent. That way he could walk around the ring and piss off the crowd even more than if he had just jumped out on top of him. Wrestlers' interviews are scripted and a rookie can become world champion.
@cocoabononohead yeah i know! every time i watch one, i wind up watching all of them! it was a great time in wrestling. before it all went to shit. i remember seeing alot of these promos when i was 14-15, i loved the super scary saturday with grandpa that came on right after this.
here's a serious question....if Ric Flair had the ability to grow is hair out with length and thickness would he look the same as these mid 80's promos or similar?
I have praised Ric Flair's persona and mic skills so many times but lets get specific. This whole counting down of opponents/wrestlers (Dusty Rhodes, Magnum TA, etc,.) has has to be the greatest promo style ever created. Nobody does in todays wrestling and even if they tried, i'm not sure they could put the "style" that Flair into it.
we need guys like "slick ric" nowadays...the only guys who come close are hhh, hbk, and maybe (given time &/or a decent push) morrison,john...like i said ,given time
It's pretty good, he's a rockstar- he can dress sharp and have groupies- in my book. that's pretty good. Plus, he's athletic enough and can talk well enough to back it up. Plus he's got a killer bod girls seem to like.
Flair never had an "um" or an "uh" or any hesitation in any of his promos. They were always perfect - even his ad-libbed putdowns of the ringside fans! Flair understood the power of promos like few in the business. And he was generous with putting guys over. If Flair mentions your name, the crowds grow bigger, and you're headlining wrestling cards all over the country. Slick Ric wasn't all about himself. Sometimes it's easy to forget he was a heel most of the time!
No one sold the business like Flair. No one could talk the talk like Slick Ric. Even after all these years I still crack up when he chirps at fans in the crowd and puts them in their place. Just priceless... McMahon's rasslin' today is a joke compared to the days of the NWA.
Slighty before February 1986, when World Class Championship Wrestling (Texas) defected from the NWA. Around the same time, Ric and Crockett Promotions replaced this belt with the Big Gold Belt.
I love how Flair fought with EVERYONE! The stories had unlimited angles because there were so many contenders. I also appreciate that he SOLD EVERYONE! Every promo Ric does, he names at least 3-5 other wrestlers in his class, so you would never forget. The stories today TRY to be too EPIC and dramatic, instead of using simple rivalry. They just don't do this anymore...
Epic promo from The Man. Why can't wresting be good today? If it wasn't for YT a lot of the great footage from Mid Atlantic, Memphis, Georgia, Mid South, etc. would never be seen. The ass hats that are today's wrestlers need to sit down with pencil / paper and learn something. The product today sucks.
You have summed it up. Nobody has come close. I give credit to HHH, Michaels and Undertaker, they are the cream of the crop today, but look at Flair's farewell, those guys know who paved the way.
