great kurt weill, great frank sinatra, what a combination, still unbeated. nowbody could sing this song so wonderful. whatever he sang, he mostly got the right style of interpretation. how great
One correction, this recording is much, much earlier than 1965. He often re-recorded songs many times in his recording career, as his maturity and life experiences could give these songs a new meaning. So, this one sound like he like late 1950's....? His best version is from his September of My Years album, from 1965-66 in which he won a Grammy for. Also on that album, his It Was A Very Good Year...every song is fantastic on that pastoral album!
Blessed with one of the greatest set of vocal cords in history; Frank was a consummate artist. This is my most poignant song, because it is my song from January to what is now November and girl, is mine and I am hers, and these precious days past and future move me as no other.
This was my father's favorite song, and I lost him three weeks ago yesterday. It seems so sadly appropriate. He was 92 years old. Thank you so much for posting.
I wonder if I can ever hear it again without crying.
Of all the albums, recordings, live performances, everything Frank ever sang - in my opinion: no album tops Point of No Return and of all the extraordinary recordings on that album this rendition of September Song reigns supreme among any and all takers......
The amazing aspect of this rendition - at least for me - is its simplicity as if anyone who practiced or knew had to sing could emulate. The fact of the matter: it's supremely difficult to sing and no one, I mean no one, will ever top. Period...
The prettiest/saddest version i've ever heard is by Jonny Fair. It's still up here last i checked, give it a listen & you'll see what i mean. It made me cry it was so beautifull...
It's a really excellent version. The problem is that standards sung nowadays sound to us almost like period pieces. Frank, singing them in their day with genius, made them timeless. All performers can do now is to capture this or that aspect (and perhaps intensify it) of those definitive recordings...
on this eve marking the anniversary of your death--on a wonderfully cool spring day like this we lost you---makes me very sad thinking of Francis' departure from our world that morning as i drove.
your memory lives on forever in perpetual greatness Francis. I know your winking & smiling at us up in heaven w/ all the angels! 1-4-3 always
Damn.I love how they use to be nasty & gangsta on the sly back then."As time came around....she CAME (Busted a nut)" LOL.Real Slick.1st Snoop Sinatra.
Umh- there's a mistake here. This is the 1961 version from the 1962 album "Point Of No Return". The other version you're thinking is 1965's "September of my Years". FYI
gee....im sorta tearing up ;~;
