  • Unbelievable talent. I used to sing all of Harry's and frank's stuff and pick up the sax for the solos until I had my vocal cord paralyzed. Sad, very sad, but listening to you play brings back great memories. There isn't a song he plays I don't know by heart (not on the piano however, but I wish). That's why i loved every bar of it! Thanks for sharing.

  • This style is stride, not ragtime. The orchestral right hand is derived from Erroll Garner's style, or at least I believe that's where Harry Connick Jr. got it from. Congratulations, you play this tune beautifully! I didn't realize that Harry Connick Jr. played this way... I'll have to take a closer listen to his music.

  • Wow...Awesome! Can you upload Connick Jr's version of Muskrat Ramble? I think he has a great interpretation.

  • As an amateur piano player, I appreciate your work. Do you know that there is a verse to the song?

    Steve S

  • My favorite Harry Connick Jr. song and definitely a difficult one to play. Excellent job on this...

  • My favorite Harry Connick Jr. song and definitely a difficult one to play. Excellent job on this...

  • Again, Awesome. Stride is my favorite style of piano!

  • Terrific! It would be nice if you could record a midifile of this song so we could learn it that way :-)

  • so cool~~you played so good.....envy~~~

  • No matter if it's New Orleans or Ragtime. Maybe both. Sure it's great.

  • I can't believe this video doesnt have 5/5. Crazy skills!

  • Thank you ;)

  • Thanks you DedeWalter. I very much appreciate this video. I bought the 25 CD in 1994 and always wanted to figure this music out on the keyboard.

If you ever have a chance to set up a view from above like MikesMusic123 channel, so we can all have a better view of what your fingers are doing, that'd be great. I suspect there are many what would like to learn to play this.

  • I'm lacking in the vocabulary of musical styles. Can someone please tell me what style this is: ragtime? jazz? What would you call it?

  • I would say it's a New Orleans jazz standard played in ragtime style.

  • Thanks. New Orleans jazz standard played in ragtime style.

  • zakaaaa

  • well done. If I had time to pick up the piano again this is the song I would be wanting to play.

  • your version is better than Harry connick's

    good job!!!

  • Thanks, but I don't think so.

He's REALLY better than me ;)

  • DedeWalter - Thanks Bud!!!! Excellent Indeed!!!

  • Excellent!

  • bravo 10/10

  • exelent, nice song

  • Great job!!!!!

  • I'm happy to hear this arrangement, I know how painstaking it is to transcribe someone else's work. Not that I want to force you to, but it would great to later, post your own version now that you've gotten so much from Connick's solo.

  • Wow....

    very nice ;)

wish I could play as well as you.

any who very nice arrangment, you did very well.

  • yeah you definitely need to put this down on a grand . . , i loathe electrics

  • Nice arrngement. I feel you need to get onto a real piano. The keyboard is not allowing the listiner any dynamic changes. All pretty much the same level and tends to become tedious. An excellent arrangement though and nicely played. Is this your own arrangement?

  • Not at all. It's Harry Connick Jr's. I tried to copy it.

  • Good job. I'll look forward for more.

  • Very good ! can you r piano record midi files ? and you could put it here !!!!

  • PURE talent!!

  • Where have you learnt jazz??

  • At home, listening to CDs.

  • But do you know harmony, don't you? I've tried yo do the same and you and I could never get the accompainment...

  • I know some music theory through the classical music I learned during my childhood

  • good try. didnt even make a dent in old garner though :D

  • Brilliant!

  • great job on the transcription. 25 is such a great album. what's next? muskrat ramble?

  • Superb rendition of Harry's verson. You have that 'dirty' left hand going just right. Now, let's hear your version. You have the skill and talent, I want to hear your style shining through. Ok, the world is waiting, so let's hear it! Great job!

  • EXCELLENT. is that an electronic piano?

  • Yep. It's a Kawaï L1. I think it has one of the most realistic piano sound, among other electric pianos. But unfortunately, you can't really hear that from these videos...

  • man this is spot on i swear. i listen to '25' at least once a month in a full sitting and it's always a treat for my ears getting to this song, well done, very well done.

  • any chance you could do a lesson ?????just play it slow...i have your version in my head and i have to learn it.i really enjoy your playing ...

  • That was terrific...love the bouncing on the keyboard...sounds just like how connick would play that song...great job!

  • i love every version of this song- but I am also a big fan of connick's and you did very well! That was my first album when I was kid...I loved stardust and tangerine.

  • never mind connick, errol garner would have been proud of that one. well played.

  • just awesome Ôo

    great job

  • pas mal

  • fantastic

  • beautiful job !!!!! you have nothing to envy to Mt connick!!!!

  • La surveillance de votre musique m'a inspiré à jouer du piano plus...

Tu savez, je suis votre nouveau fan de numéro un XD

  • You are one amazing guy! I also play the same style and can appreciate what you have done!!! Old Mr. Sacreats or whatever his name is should keep his arrogant comments to himself. It is obvious to me that he is nothing but a bit jealous of your ability to play as impeccably as you do. You truly are great and thank you for sharing your talent. I look forward to hearing more!.

  • Very nice, awesome left hand!

  • Hi !

It's great to hear stride piano ont the web. Congratulations, it sounds perfect. I'm sure you know Erroll Garner ( and Fats Waller of course )

Best regards from a French jazz fan.

    Antoine

  • so good.

  • you are truly gifted!

    do you play Muskrat Ramble?

  • I am unfortunately a bit of a snob when it comes to posts like this, being someone who earns a nice living out of playing and also being a big fan of HCJ - BUT - you have done a really good swinging job and I listened all the way through to your post and very much appreciated what you have achieved. GREAT WORK!

  • respect! You have good ears.

  • I hate to make mean comments like this, but if you can only identify this song as one that Harry Connick Jr. plays, then you need to start expanding your music collection. Sorry...Your playing is pretty top-notch, though.

  • I do know this song as a jazz standard, I'm not stupid. But what I meant is just that, with this video, I tried to play EXACTLY the way Harry plays it on his album "25". That's all.

  • you'll be sad you'll be blue..you'll miss the best mama you ever had..after you've gone.and left me cryin'...i love it....if you need the words let me know

  • I would pay to watch you play. You are incredible and very talented. Closing your eyes, anyone would guess its Harry Connick Jr - keep it up and post more HCjr!!!!

  • Man it sounds great... This with bass and drums... you should get your 2+... wow. Ever swinging... Greetz Jo

  • Dude, I have grown up listening to Harry and I've just got to say that you've nailed it. Had I not seen you playing, I would have assumed I was listening to him. Very impressive. Keep posting.

  • Aha, you're in Paris. I was in Duc des Lombards last year - near Chatelet. Went to see a saxophonist from Cameroon accompanied by a brilliant pianist. There were only five of us in the audience. What I liked was the humility and accessibility of the musicians - I met them during the intermission and they were all incredibly friendly. Also met another jazz pianist who had skipped over during his intermission to share a beer with these dudes. So, we all talked and happily sipped beer together.

  • Funny! I live near Chatelet!

  • How do you learn a piece by ear? It has always baffled me how pianists do that.

  • I don't know, I just...do it. First, I focus my ear on the left hand part that I listen to, then on the right hand part, and reproduce it.

  • You did a great job. Have you written down any of his piano music? I'm interested in purchasing some sheet music if you have any from Harry Connick Jr.

    Thanks,

    Tom

  • Unfortunately no. I have not written anything about the Harry's songs I've played. It's just all my head... ;)

  • Hello there. I've been trying to play Harry Connick Jr for a while now and I think I have the winterwonder land song down. Is there anyway I could buy a composition from you for this song? It sounds great!

  • Actually, the first video I made for YouTube was the Harry's piano version of "Winter Wonderland" that I played and recorded. But I had decided not to upload it because of some mistakes...But I still have it in my computer.

  • waaaaoh great! I really like your playing so much. I was fun of Hurry Connic Jr. Now I am fun of you!:P

  • Thank you! But Harry plays far better than me ;)

  • Great Job Man! Do you play professionally? You have quite a skill to be able to pick these pieces up by ear.

  • Thanks! Unfortunately I don't play professionally...but I played a few times in piano-bars in Paris, just for fun.

  • incredible!

  • i love it

  • harry was a monster then--I met him in the early '90s when he gave a clinic at North Tx --my university.

try Avalon --from his 20 album--I transcribed that one for a improv assignment. Hi hands are gigantic--(I shook them :) transcribing the notes isn't the problem--it's being able to deliver them like he did.

    great transcription!!!

  • nice timing and all that..very good performance. Any tips on how to copy solos? Cause I like to work this way myself, often with good results but at the cost of large amounts of time. So how do I speed up the copying? Thx man:P

  • I don't really have tips on how to copy solos. Actually it depends on how difficult is the piano piece to be reproduced (and "After You've Gone" is a complex one...) First, I focus my ears on the left hand part (to catch all the notes), then on the right hand part. For that song, it took me a whole day to have a general "vision" of what both hands have to play. But to finalize it in details in order to have the very same notes as in Harry's performance, it took me few more weeks...

  • Did you write any of it down (transcribe it)? Or do you simply play all of this from memory? Either way your playing is extremely impressive.

  • Thanks. I actually play from memory. I didn't write anything.
