Its all well and good playing powder chords fast with noodley bits in between, but your only limiting your own capability and musical repertoire. Most musicians use theory as a guide especially in improvisations to help out with melodic phrasing and in a band situation if another musician says to you "this song is in f lydian" you'd be buggered

Theory is great and I taught myself guitar with a fair amount of theory involved and also taking stuff I learned from piano, and it works for me. But theory is really not for everyone. In most cases its almost a waste of time trying to explain the theory behind the song, so tapping into the inspiration behind the song is so much easier in the grand scheme of things.
