Wow it seems like there's some serious germ-aphobia in Japan!!...some germs are good, they keep the immune system strong. And besides, all this stress about taking shoes off, putting slippers on, genkan, no genkan is likely to drive a person into an early grave :D
i'm a new subscriber to your channel...i find these videos very useful and informative. Thank you for taking time to enlighten us about the japanese culture. I know one day i'd like to visit.
omg that gonna suck for me whit big feet haha it doesnt work then if slippers don't fit :P u will touch the floor whit ur socks wich then will go back in the room again :(
we also wear slippers in my country, but we let our guests stay with their shoes really often, and we're encouraging them to, so they be more comfortable
I'm curious, why do japanese girls don't shave? what is the meaning behind having hair between the legs? I am serious about this question. I have always wanted to know the answer to it.
I'm pretty sure they do..... There's shavers and shaving cream sold every where in shops. As a Japanese girl, most of my friends shave their body hair frequently, I guess once in 3 days ?
Don't know where you got that impression from but hope this helps ^^
Btw, what do you mean my hair between legs...... 0_o
1. If you see slip-ons right on the border of the genkan and the house, WEAR THEM!
2. If you see another pair in a room, wear those instead while inside. Keep your general house slippers on the outside. (But remember to wear your house slippers out of the room!)
what is the reason for taking your shoes off in japan at someones house or your own..I'm sure part of this is because you don't want to track dirt in the home...But is there another reason?..like not bringing in bad spirits or something?..I don't know sir..I just want you or someone to teach me...Please
Can you give us some details of how there are differences in sanitary matters in Japan versus China?
Like clean kitchens in restaraunts, spitting in public, blowing snot from one's nose by just blowing it out by closing one nostril and blowing hard so it ends up on your face and hands...I see people do that in the US and I find that really disgusting.
Okay, so you said that walking through the house in the bathroom slippers would cause great embarasment, right? Im just wondering are you speaking out of experience or is that just common sense?
Judging from your videos, Japan is extremely inhumane and a shame society. FEAR FEAR FEAR FEAR. Fear of germs, fear of losing face, fear of rejection etc etc etc. Absolutely no TRUE freedom.
what you just described is the sign of a civilized country. If you have no shame or doesn't' give a crap about germs, maybe you best go live in barbaric country where true freedom lies in no laws or rules.
I love how Japanese people do things like this! Sometimes I just want to walk around my house barefoot, but can't because of people tracking in dirt with their shoes into the house and on the carpet even!
One is forced to wonder which is the simpler solution to dealing with cleanliness and possible dirt tracked in on shoes. Taking shoes and slippers on and off and then even bathroom slippers and house slippers. Or not sitting on the floor so it does not really matter if the are not absolutely clean.
How do people in Japan deal with cats and dogs in their homes? It must violate the concept of keeping the floors clean that the animals walk around bare-pawed both indoors and outside.
How the hell is everyone wearing the same slippers "germ free". I'd hate to unknowingly wear the same slippers that a person with athlete's foot also wore, or even just people with very smelly feet. And trust me, socks don't protect you from those. Well, I guess there's a lot of unneeded germ culture crap in my nation that I'm not even aware of either.
I noticed that there wasn't a sink in the bathroom. Was it there and you just didn't film it or is there a reason that the bathroom only contains a toilet?
That actually makes a lot of sense, especially since Japanese houses have so much activity on the floor. Obviously you'd want to keep your feet clean of any bathroom-floor germs if they're going to be near your bed. Ick.
when someone ring on the door what do you do? do you not step on the "gaykan" or do you put your outside shoes to open the door?...(o_O) sorry , I'm just wondering since I though slippers should never touch the gaykan and the ouside shoes should never touch the floor of the house..
Your great videos make me aware the things Japanese very much. I, as a Japanese, take it so much for granted that I behave exactly as you mention in your video without a second thought. The toilet slippers are one of the perfect example for this. How complicated it is to take off or put on your shoes or slippers in a Japanese house. If I have a chance to invite a Western guest to my house, I should remember to tell them as you say in your video!
I'm going to go to Japan, ignore their customs, violate their etiquette, and offend their sensibilities. I will record the whole thing with hidden cameras and turn it into an Internet reality show.
hmm i don't mind the whole slipper idea, but what if someone has bad feet odor and wears the slippers before you? i'd find that thought a bit more disturbing :\
I was recently in Japan, and I never wore the slippers offered to me when i visited someones house(or even at the airport when i had to remove my shoes) - it's only hit me now that maybe this was really rude :S Do the Japanese get offended if you don't wear slippers in their house?
aww man, I hate slippers I broke my army and have a nasty scar now on my right arm because of damn slippers :( This is going to be the only thing I will hate about Japan D:
@dreamdrao yes they are usually green in colour, and I did that walking through the house thing with them on. Not good funny and I felt like an ass but I wouldn't do it again.
oh yeah,i did this misstake with toilet slippers...and walked through the livning room, and guess what, all of my grilfriends familymember saw that...i will never forget their appall faces.
Was kind of weird atmosphere after that :)
But at least it was a foreigner misstake and now i got used to it...:D
Why didn't you have slippers when you were next to toilet? I mean do they allow it in some houses to go on some areas with just socks?
by the way friend of mine was as change student in japan. unfortunately he became very sick and stayed almost all the time in bed. The owners of the house didn't want a guy who just lies on bed and complained in hope that they could change him. I'm not sure. I might found it a bit rude to just drive him away ..
So is it like the Genkan and you leave your house slippers outside the toilet and put the toilet slippers on shut the door, *do your stuff* and open the door and straight back into the house slippers!
P.S whats an atami mat floor? (if thats how you say it)
This guy knows quite bit of Japan. I never thought about such a probrems foreigners are facing ... Personally I do not care about small mistakes but do not do too much. We will hate you...Ha Ha. Good luck to all!
no cause ALL of them are well mannered and do that.. it would be bad if germ-carry people like ourselves (foreigners) went there everyday and not follow their "rules" of manners
i would like to move to japan and live there on my own any tips and average cost of living (would like to either teacher english to japanese students or be a computer engineer ^_^)
hey thanks mate,my mom loves that idea but i will tell you one thing.i just wont use the toilets at the restraints i will have to hold it.the Japanese are brilliant, because i am a germs phobia so this is brilliant to me not weird thank you.
I would think that it would take some time getting used to using different slippers for certain things. Knowing myself, I would either forget to take off the house slippers or take them off but forget about the toilet slippers.
By the way, does the bathroom floor have carpet on it? Kind of looks like it to me.
Because shoes can bring in germs and dirt into the house onto the floor. The floor where they eat and sleep. You don't really want to eat where your feet have been, do you?
They are mostly low rise tables. So both the tables and the mats are way down to the floor.
Unlike western styled where you have a mattress and bed set and a table, it is at least from 2-4 feet off the group.
As your house, I don't mean to be rude but when it comes to cleanliness, it isn't always what it seems. But I know for sure my house for sure is much more dirty then yours.
it almost seems like its part of the japanese culture to be clean. sounds like the place for me and the whole shoe and slipper thing just makes senses

it makes sense because shoes can bring germs and other nasty things into our dear home.. you never know where those shoes have been before or where they have stepped on.. they better stay outside!
around where i live people like to where adidas slipers or nike(what ever) with socks and basket ball shorts in public and some times their PJs, do people in japan do that? (highly doubt it but what ever, just want to know)
i feel bad for you in that case but I want more too, and the bed topic would be interesting
Though I sleep on the floor everywhere because I can be comfortable on nearly anything and beds are a waste of space that you cant recover for when you need it
Futons are a convenient thing to have as a bed aside from the benefit to your body
In hotels i dont necessarily care either way but as my hotel experiences are as shared spaces at conventions I usually choose the floor to give others the bed
And it was quite freaky when I first saw americans walk around the house with shoes on. It's considered impolite to the host/es/. Even if she tells you that it's ok.
YEA YOU ARE RIGHT. 5 STARS FOR THE STATEMENT

Why don't you get real beds?
Sleeping on the floor sucks, amirite?
The house slippers sound quite cool

Sleeping on the floor on futon is excellent!
If I stay in a hotel and they have the choice of western bed or futon, I always pick futon!
Great for the body!

It is?
Man I just would find it annoying because they are wafer thin and I'de find myself waking up on the floor
Heroesrock09 2 years ago
Damn you, dude!
Now I want to make a video about it!
I can't make them as fast as I keep thinking of new topics!!!!!
:-D

Lol
That'd be cool

i feel bad for you in that case but I want more too, and the bed topic would be interesting
