hi professorV, how do you move your wrist? Is it side by side or back and forth? I'm trying to watch closely on the video but I cannot catch up which direction you move your wrist hehe. Thanks!
Hi lounacandelaria, this video is really about the fingertip motion in vibrato. Watch my videos on wrist/hand and arm vibrato for the other motions. Good luck.
Really great! After playing 'cello for over 4 decades, I just bought a new violin, and this really gives me a lot of hope and joy. HUGE fan of classical music, and rock (KANSAS) and jazz-fusion (Jean-Luc Ponty) as well! MANY many thanks for your great lessons!
Sir you are by far the clearest of all the tutorial vids. you know exactly what you are doing and such a level of clarity can only come from experience. We appreciate with much gratitude your efforts to put up your videos. THANK YOU.
hi i like just started watching these and i really cant get vibrato. i seem to be moving my whole hand and cant seem to make the right noise it always sounds bad.
hello professor i just was wondering if vibrato in violin is easier than in a viola somehow if i vibrato in violin i get a perfect vibrato but if i vibrato in a viola its just not the same and am a viola player its it different
hello professor v, my name is maurice and i have been playing violin for about 1-1/2 yr....i have been taking some classes at a local university here in houston....( Univ. of St. Thomas) i seem to be coming along slowly but surely....working on suzuki 2 workbook....just giving you a little idea where i am in playing violin.... when doing vibrato...should the wrist move side to dies or back and forth as i THINK that is the way you are doing it.....what am i missing
hey professor V, I've tough times practicing vibrato as i found that the side of my first finger tends to hold up the neck to support the weight of the violin and this makes it a bit harder for me. Please advise
@b3nl3y, If that's the case, try bringing your thumb under the neck a little more, which will help support the instrument (and also set the fingers higher, making the pinkie easier to use). Just make sure you keep your wrist straight (some people push the wrist out when they change the position). FYI; I do keep the contact between the neck and the side of the first finger in (low positions), but only very lightly, allowing the skin to just brush against the neck.
How are you able to even move either the wrist or fingers without dropping the violin? I can't even move my wrist at all while still holding the violin up. This is an electric Stagg violin though, which is a bit heavier. But still, muscle memory is probably key here, my hands, fingers or wrist have never moved like this before. And I'm in my mid 20's. Is it too late to even try to begin to play the violin?
Hi, I'm from Venezuela. to play slow pieces lately I've noticed that my vibrato is 80% of arm, but my wrist is completely motionless. does not sound bad, but I would like to know that I recommended him to start moving, I am concerned that fix these things when one has created a bad habit is very difficult. Daniel.
Just feeling short of words to Thank you professor ..what I got that flexibility on the first knuckle is the key for vibrato and please tell me if I want to make an intense wrist vibrato should I generate it with the first knuckle ?i.e do I have to flat my knuckle more ? if yes then what metronome speed I should set to achieve it? I longe for vibrato.
LOL yayy!!! this is so awesome and soooo helpful!!! i was wondering this for such a loonngg time but never encountered this video until now ;DDD you surely think about everything and you are so awesome for respoding to other people's questions ;DDD
when i do this, there are times that i produce a sort of semi-harmonic tone. or in guitar, we call it pinched harmonic.. is it that i have a wrong finger practice on vibratos?
No one can explain things like you! I've been stuck in a rut with vibrato for a week, unable to stop the instrument from shaking... The way you break it down makes it much easier to learn.
thank you professor..I 'm try to learn the violin by myself and your videos are helpful..I hope that one day i will able to make some kind of vibrato..
I come from guitar background and have no problem doing vibrato on a violin in "guitar position", both wrist and arm types, but as soon as I place the violin on my shoulder, my hand locks and won't move.
Hi, With arm vibrato you will see some motion in the base knuckle (closest knuckle to the hand). The middle knuckle doesn't move much, but nothing should be rigid or held tight.
wow good tip!! I still find it very hard to even do that movement on a desk as my fingers (knuckles) are double jointed and go right the other way :( I was wondering do you have any students who had the same problem? How did you resolve the issue?
thanks for the video.. I was wondering, my son has been playing for around 8 years now, but his teacher says that his vibrato is too fast.. What is the best way to slow down his vibrato and control it?
Hi, Counting the numbers of vibrato cycles (back and forward motion) per second can be very helpful. Paul Rolland said the speed (rate) of the average artistic vibrato is just under seven cycles per second. To get a speed of seven per second, set a metronome to 105 (or 104 on many metronomes), then try to get four motions in each beat. To get eight per cycles per second, set it at 120. You should figure out his current speed and attempt to work it down with the metronome. Good luck!
@mespiritu93 I had the same problem. My teacher, who plays in the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra told me the problem comes from the forearm. If you stiff up your forearm, and you press the string really hard, you won't be able to control the vibrato. You have to tell him to loosen up the wrist. Another student of his had to goto the hospital for rehab because she couldn't loosen up her forearm, and eventually injured it.

but i have a problem with my vibrato. i am a begginer and when i do it i can't help but hitting the pegs constantly when i'm in 2nd or 3rd position or lower and also hitting the side of my hand against the neck. Also as i speed up i start throwing the violin up and down and find it very hard to control. I have atributted this to my big hands so far, but also recon it's from persistent guitar habbits as i am primarily a guitarist. Any tips or advice?
I'll learn to play violin next year (if I can say next year, hehe, because it's almost 2009), and all the advices you give to your "online students" are really, really helpful. And I know they'll be useful for me too :)... So thanks again!!!
helpful but i hold my violin in a diffrent way... instead of the finger tips pointing to the bridge my finger tips point more towards the thumb than the bridge...
What a fantastic violin teacher you are! I have just started out at the ripe old (?) age of 32, and your videos have really come in useful. I have a lot to learn - but I'm certain your lessons will really help :-) Just one question - is it more difficult as you get older to learn an instrument such as the violin? Will progress be slower, or does it simply depend on how much I put into it? Thanks in advance :0)
Professor V, Please post a video on where the vibrato motion is generated from. My teacher says that regardless of what kind of vibrato you are doing...it all starts from the elbow. That doesn't make sense to me. Where do you feel the motion is generated from for each kind of vibrato?

Thanks a lot!!! But my sub. for the real vibrato was just pressing and releasing the string, is it the same effect/ sound produced?
argyne654 2 years ago
Not exactly, I think... Normal vibrato never lets go of the string, so the sound should be different in some aspect.
Learn both and compare! :)
