@AutoStigmata Mcluhan defines "media" as anything that extends human senses, so a hammer (extension of the arm) is media just as much as television is. The lightbulb is an extension of the eyes, allows work to continue after sundown; it has amplified human productivity simply by conquering the dark.
@1955Doodlebug I think it's supposed to be like that. It's just poorly edited. These are part of a series of educational 'advertisements' for Canadians.
The student who says "The medium is the message? What does that mean?" - his name is Mark Polley, and he's the brother of Sarah Polley, of the Road to Avonlea series fame. Used to work with him in the early 90s. First time I saw this, I nearly jumped out of my skin. Never expect to see someone I know on TV like this!
I remember hearing that never, ever did Marshall ever admit to anyone else "getting it" . that no matter how many people approached him and said they "Got" it . he always said they were wrong..dunno if thats true
for example. 1960 presidential debate between NIxon and John F. Kennedy. Nixon tripped over his words and was sweating the entire debate, Kennedy was well maintained. People who heard it on the radio said that Nixon won, while people who saw the debate on TV agreed that Kennedy won. The technology that sends the message determines its outcome.
@wishingstar22 I always read it as, the shape of a medium itself has particular effects on the audience. There's particular messages that TV carries about the content, and about the viewer, that aren't carried by the Internet. Not always sure I agree with him, though. Considering lightbulbs as a communications medium gives you some really cool ways to think about media.
So true, But unlike the internet the Media has become a controlled agendists wet dream
You have a few Mainstream Media Barons who realy know how to rig elections for those who will exploit the agendists cause,
Let the Medium be in a freedom of the internet to always be able to see past those smileing faces that suck the life out of your brains, And further the Agenda for more war for Oil.
It would have placed too much emphasis on the medium over the content, though the different mediums do have profound impact on us on all social perspectives.

is it just me or does it sound like the actor who plays professor mcluhan, is the same guy who voiced professor xavier in the 90's x-men cartoon?

Does anyone know the origin of this piece? Is it part of a longer video? This seems truncated at the end.

I'd say what is important is how the medium is used to deliver the message.

Pretty sure McLuhan never made that face when he came to this conclusion.

This proves that Fine Arts majors have been spouting drivel for years regarding what the students of *real* Sciences and Humanities produce.

after seeing that so many times, it still confuses the fuck out of me.

@TumorChrist it means that the media does not only shows a bunch of account from the camera, but it has a message. so, the media IS the message.

@TumorChrist read the book and it will make sense. it should be mandatory reading in school.
