I think it is the planet Venus or perhaps planet Jupiter. People often call 911 asking what it is, believe it or not!!! The light flashes are caused by the atmosphere, it's humidity, wind, angle of the object etc. the lower the object is towards the horizon, the stronger the flashing and shimmering. You can use a sky map, your location and time and date to find out if I'm right.

i had this exact same experience. . . . weird.. . . it was right over our tree line as well, and every few seconds, beams would be projected out, then pulled in. . . we actually even got to see this thing shoot off at a really weird angle, then shoot right back at the exact same spot it was before it left. . weird. .

im from australia and there was apparently a sphereish craft that held a beam of light over water and sucked up water somehow, then it spat some of it out. it went on for a couple hours heaps of people saw it and it was in the newspapers, around new south wales i think

several corner mirrors (designed for visible light lasers) were left on the moon by NASA apollo missions. corner reflectors work as 3 mirrors arranged in a corner will cause light to bounce off each mirror and head back in the same direction from which it came. the time for the light to be reflected indicates distance

maybe it's light reflected by a cross mirror on the clouds from a satellite/weather balloon
