  • nice video , beautiful blade, i just dislike what you do at the end with it xp

  • Oh damn

    Nice job cutting those things

Also, where did you order them?

  • I absolutely love your vids i wanted to know if you have any tips for beginners but seriously epic vids

  • @animeswordsgirl Come and join us at United Backyard Cutters sword forums (unitedbackyardcutter(dot com). You will find friendly people, good information and the benefit of Tom Urso , our Safety Officer, who is also a renowned sword instructor.

  • I am your big fan man ... ignore that bad comments ... have fun with your swords and be careful when shaving :-D ;-)

  • So I'm trying to get into katana cutting-well cutting of any sort for that matter..and I was just wondering how the katana (in the scabbard) was held. Do you just stick it in your belt? Or do you do a fancy tie with the fabric that's already on there? And yes, I know that it's a 'tsuka' or something like that lol

  • @mikeanator55 Hi, Generally, the katana is worn through the belt ( the wrap belt worn around a kimono or gi is called an obi) with the blade edge facing up. The string on the scabbard ( or saya ) is called the sageo and is generall just tied to the obi with lots of slack so the saya can be moved forward in your belt. Check out United backyard cutters for a great group of people who enjoy target cutting with edged weapons. unitedbackyardcutter ( dot) com

  • "you there! put down that weapon!"

"weapon? tch, this is just my shavin' kit"

    ;) lol

  • TENACIOUS D! i love you man

  • haha! The random kayakers at 0:32!

  • @bleachred: I hope someone tells YOU one day that you are not the badass you think you are by posting negative comments. =\ he has skill and should be respected, you on the other hand, are lacking.

Btw, good video. Show the pool noodles who's boss!! Whoop!! ^_^

  • Nice vid randy, btw is that your own backyard? pretty cool you've got al these asian kind styles or influences back there !

    Thumbs up for UBC!

  • @Streamysauce Thanks. Ya, this is my yard. I own 4 acres on a river here. Eventually the entire area down by the water will have a Japanese garden feel to it.

  • @bleachred23 Did I make any claims to be Asian? One does not need to be Asian to practice the Budo Arts, nor to own a Japanese-styled sword, nor to be a member of UBC. Non-asians all around the world practice shinkendo, iaido, karate, judo and many other Asian martial arts . Many other non-asians, like myself, also collect katanas and other bladed weapons. What a ridiculously close-minded and prejudiced thing to say.

  • @Jeeperrandy LoL, don't let the haters bring you down.... You don't got to be Asian to practice this... Just like you don't have to be black to rap, etc.. Keep it up.

  • thts atually pretty badass shavin wit tht sword man

u should totally do that in like a public bathroom

  • LAWL GO BACK TO YOUR XBOX> EXACTLY! HAHAH! POST MOAR VIDZ!

  • shave with a katana, now thats awesome

  • To be honest, when I first saw the sleeveless shirt with the hakama, I was a bit skepical, (and yes I read the description!!!!) but I see now that I was wrong in doubting. However, I am trained in Iaido, and am not familiar with much else, so if you would, please tell me what style you are using? Kendo?

  • @CannonX17 This video isn't about my swordsmanship, nor my attire. It was to show members of UBC the sword I acquired in one of the promotions ( a UBC auction ). But just for reference, at the time i was learning tachi variations of several seitei katas ( due to my arthritis) as taught by my friend and mentor, Sensei Alex DaCosta.

  • @Jeeperrandy Understood. Simply curiosity. Thank you.

  • does the cutting put ANY marks on the blade??

  • @irnlxkjoe Even cutting properly praepared tatami will often scuff the blade. The scuffs are just residue of the the material caused by friction. It is easily polished off and does no damage. I haven't yet chipped, cracked or scratched a sword blade while cutting, and I have over a dozen swords I regularily cut with.

  • sweet sword. Is the blade black? It looks black in the video.

  • @RalleyWolf No, it's a regular carbon steel blade ( 1070 if I remember correctly.)

  • thats it, screw shaving with a razor! From now on im shaving with a sword!

  • nice dude a sweet sword you have there wish i can free cut here at canada since i have katanas but its forbiden here dude im so jealous of you having free will to try your katanas they are meant to cut not just to display oh how i wish i can hear your sword wiphing and whispering in every slashes

  • Beatifull place Beatifull Katana.

  • @Stratos4Kamikaze Thanks

  • You handle your blade like it's a slack cock. You should be ashamed.

  • @Labeilofest I doubt the only thing you've ever held is a slack cock, and likely not your own. What a fucking troll. Get a life.

  • where can i get the cutting mats at??? i dont think anyone where i live sells them:( or what can i use to pratice that is about the same as the cutting mats

  • @quintonbob Tatami mats can be ordered online, but many of us go to local discount stores and buy beach mats. They are made from a similar material and are cheap. It's best to roll two together, tie them with 6 or six strings and then soak them under water for a day or two. Many of us also practice cutting with water-filled plastic bottles and jugs.

  • @Jeeperrandy ive checked every store around me no one has the beach mats D: i loooked everyhwhere haha

  • sorry I missed a few seconds of the vid because I was distracted by the people canoeing in the back xD sorry :P I couldn't help but to watch them >.<

  • @0900090990 Heh, ya, canoes and kayaks go by here every day in the summer.

  • @Jeeperrandy You must get the odd glare or two. Looks like a nice little lake you're on there, no shortage of filet knives. :)

    Ontario?

  • @van1980 Yup, Parry Sound area on Georgian Bay. I can get three different lakes from my place. It's great.

  • i feel very heavy about my katana, how heavy is ur katana ?

  • You sir are the manliest man to ever to walk the face of the earth.

  • @amayagab lol, just like the guy in the Old Spice ads.

  • @Jeeperrandy Delicious cake!

  • Don't shave with a katana dude... nice sword anyway.

  • I can see how pool noodles can help with cutting because though they are soft they can help you practice your cutting posture and technique without fear of ruining your sword. Plus they are cheap and easy to prepare. Beautiful sword how's it holding out?

  • Um, I wanna be nice. Mind if I comment on your kendo form?

  • shaving with a fucking sword i had to like this video cause of that :D

    you r a pro

  • @steveo9001 LOL, I'm glad you liked it. I don't recommend shaving with one though, i cut my cheek a little bit.

  • Nice katana I've also thought about what it would be like to shave with a katana lol. I'll take your advice though and not try it. Perhaps making a salid with it would be much safer and more practical. Again I won't do that either because chopping food with it might ruin the blade and not very responsible. Keep up the great work I look forward to seeing what ideas you can come up with.

  • law of internet people are idiots and no one can escape them

  • OMG! So many haters here... what did you do to them? Anyway, I loved the shaving thing... yes, that's all I wanted to say, now I'm gonna crawl back to SBG, where most people don't speak without knowing (ok... all do at some point, but still). Little story: in a competition earlier this year, I made a necklace and bracelet and used a hybrid between roundmaille and box weave for it and over 1000 individual jump links and yet there was a fellow (losing) competitor crying about how easy it was to

  • @Gjergji311 Heh, ya, there's a lot of keyboard critics on youtube. I did this video about a year ago, not to show off my meager skills, or my wardrobe, but the katana itself , and give a little plug to Swords of Might, who were donating raffle and contest prizes to UBC.

  • @MrSimpleChef OOps, My cooking alter-ego was logged in ! It's just me, Jeeperrandy

    :-)

  • @MrSimpleChef

    Ah, that's better.

  • awesome, i shave with tantos btw they stay sharper than razors for so much longer

  • awesome sword.i think this is going to be the next sword for my collection.

  • Someone said illegal to pack one in USA kinda wierd we can pack one here in canada , you guys can pack guns but not swords , us swords but not guns , what gives

  • do u have video on all of them? also do you collect armor as well?

  • lol this guitar solo guy just tried to insult me on my page :)) i guess i just hurt his feelings with my last comment, well who cares...

anyway you got any other great swords? i saw your claymore but do you have others?

  • @DeathLordFhyeg Currently I have about 15 katanas, including some custom pieces, as well as a couple of wakisashi and a Hanwei Practical tanto. I also have 3 other Hanwei European swords and a one-of-a-kind Glamdring sword and seax knife from Fable Blades.

  • beautiful sword and the place you do live on!

  • beautiful sword!!!

  • Loved the shaving part. I think white fittings are ugly though, never liked them myself.

The only people who spout nonsence about respect are either untrained or old japanese geezers with less sanity than hair. The same tends to be for honour also, the whole concept's bullshit...fighting is fighting, swords are tools.

  • I like your description :))

  • cool vid, bit disrespectful to such a beautiful blade to use it as a razor, but oh well, times have changed :)

  • @KillSwitch66627

Typical comment from a typical teenaged, pimple-faced gamer. I guess you didn't read the video description.

  • @Jeeperrandy dude you look like such a loser in this video

  • @TheBestGuitarSoloEVR LOL, I though of taking this seriously until I saw your channel. Thank you very much. Being called a loser by the utmost KING of losers is a real compliment. That's like Rembrandt calling me an artist.

  • @Jeeperrandy totally jealous of my upload views and or not having to pay women for sex

  • @TheBestGuitarSoloEVR Seriously? Your unoriginal uploads, spammed from other sources, reflect a total lack of talent or imagination. You are a youtube whore, uploading sensationalism in order to generate views in a pathetic attempt to satisfy your childish need for attention. Then you sit back and make insulting remarks on other people's videos for amusement. Pretty sad really. That's called being troll. Really sad. I feel sorry for losers like you. My guess is you're about 15, and gay.

  • @TheBestGuitarSoloEVR lol, let's see, he's got great muscles, he's got alot of swords and stuff, he's trained in using them... he's not a looser, i don't think you'd stand a second before him :)

  • @DeathLordFhyeg ill kick his ass with karate and someone can use a gun. he looks like a loser

  • prove it :)

  • the shaving part whas awesome 5 stars

  • rofl, that shaving thing, ive tried it with mine b4 i saw this video out of curiosity xD it works, lulz

  • i wonder if japan made shaving razor like how they make katanas lol

  • nice video. and nice cut off t. fuck the haters they prolly dont even own live blades. they go by what they see in G rated anime cartoons Lol

  • haha you shaved omg thats nuts mate well in i had a sword but it was stainless steel and i cant be arsed sharpening it cause i know it will just be pure shite so im gonna save for a scottish claymore

  • Jaaja, You just gave me an idea... I'm gonna buy some of those noodles to practice with my Katana, but I need to sharp it first..hmm...

That was greaaat, big backyard, cutting stuff with a katana, summer day...oh, fuck yeah xD

  • Obviously the people who talked trash about this video have no idea what you were really trying to show in this video.

  • Do you have any sort of link to this Katana? I'd like to see what it looks like up close. Thanks

  • @Lexesbenz

Kawashima Steel no longer exists but the same sword is being marketed by Zhejiang Zhengs Sword Co., Ltd, which was likely a parent company. The snowfall can be found at thier website under the model ZS-574

  • Thanks I really appreciate it!! one more thing, do you know any major retail store where I can get cheap pool noodles? lol

  • @Lexesbenz

Once summer comes you can buy them at most discount stores . I get mine at the Dollarama.

  • Very cool, thanks I appreciate it!!

  • dude i got to swords of might to im buying a 20 dallor katana battleready they r great!

  • Do not, I repeat, DO NOT buy a stainless steel katana! They are nothing more than decoration. Save your money and buy a cheap Musashi or some other carbon steel bladed katana. Nobody sells a usable katana for $20.

  • Sounds like Jack Black singing...

  • it is :L its "wonderboy" bt Tenacious D lol

  • how do i join ubc ?

  • go to my profile page and click on the link I have posted on the left side. Cheers.

  • is that where you live it looks so peaceful and a good place for training

  • Yes, that is my home and it is a very relaxing, peaceful place.

    :-)

  • where do you live??? cause i seriously wanna live in a place like that

  • Near Parry Sound, Ontario Canada. It is a vacation area mostly. lots of cottages and lakes on the rocky surface of the Great Canadian Shield.

  • Beautiful i've always wanted to live in Canada. I've been there before and i've always thought about it.

  • hahahaha keyboard warriors

  • Dude, pool noodles. I can't believe I didn't think of that. Frikkin' tatami mats are starting to get really expensive. I switched over to cardboard for a while, but they scratch your blade like there's no tomorrow.

And I can't believe you had the cojones to get an oversized razor blade to your face omg. You're the frikkin' man, man!

I love the attire. I use basketball shorts and jerseys when I go cutting. It's way comfortable in the heat, but nowadays, it's all jogging pants and sweaters.

  • The shave thing was hilfreakinlarious dude...Thanx 4 posting

  • where do you get those one things i think theyre called taitos that u cut cuz im getting a musashi dragon fury katana from true swords on saturday and i wanna test it out and how do u sharpen a katana

  • The Musashi you buy should be sharp enough to cut well right out of the box. The cheapest and easiest cutting materials to get are beach mats available at discount stores.

  • ok thanks ill go to one in the next few days

  • love your clay more but plz!! katanas!! i hate them but thats my upiniun!

  • Where can I get one of those katanas? And how much will it cost me?

And is it legal to own katana in the states?

    Very nice katana btw

  • This particular katana came from Swords of might, which is a company in the states. The newer version of it was even nicer, with an authentic hamon, but I'm not sure if Swords of Might still carry them. They were about $200. SOM and other companies sell many nice katanas in this price range.

  • thank you very much.

  • you mean the U.S.? yea it's illegal to walk around with a weapon unless you have it for show at your house.

  • This is the second video about a blade testing that used Tenatious D in the background during the testing. I think that going forward all tamashagiri videos should use Tenatious D.

  • The shaving thing was very funny!

  • pool noddles! cheap and they probably work some what ok, right???

  • heh, yup. And you don't have to tie them, soak them, etc.

  • lol i dont think "kids" have faceial hair randy XD

every time i watch this video it make's me want to go outside and do some cutting... damn it! lol

    great form there randy..^_^

  • Nice control on your cuts, pretty good form there!

  • Thanks. That was a year ago and I was still fairly new to cutting. I've learned a lot since then.

  • hey mate

i got a kawashima katana and mine is made out of 1065 carbon steel, is yours like that or is it the new 1095 spring steel type

    cheers

  • This one is a first generation model, 1065 steel

  • ah cheers its a great cutter i got the Daishou with the orange saya, bargin of the century, have fun its a great sword :)

  • there is no shame in using pool noodles in tameshigiri. As it turns out, it can be just as difficult as tatami omote as it will easily fly across the yard. So its actually good for working of getting up your speed in your cut.

  • Sure i'll join, after i find a nice looking and sharp katana. Btw i'm only 14... Gotta ask daddy if he can buy me one, I've been saving money for 2-4 years now! I can only buy swords under 25 cm at the Sword-shop in town, because i'm under 18 years... I've found some nice equipment at internet, though! Hope dad can let be buy one of those... I haven't spend any money on months!

  • have a look at a paul chen practical xl light. im 14 and i think its really smart

  • just get some one to buy them for you i asked my sis since she's 21 it doesn't have to be your parents lol

  • nice cuts there dude!

id sooner use me mach three tbh XD

but anyway "wonderboy" good tune man!

  • wow shaving with katana hehehe :D

  • Hehe, free stuff to chop is the best. I make sure everyone I know hands over empty coke bottles, milk jugs, water bottles and the like.

  • I think shaving with tanto was very common then xD

    Damn you've cut yourself ;p

I would be even afraid of swinging such sword.

  • God, I'd be too scared to try shaving with that sword anyway!

I can manage to cut myself just barely touching the edge of a sword I sharpened, much less pressing it on my face.

  • Is this one sharper, than the other 200-400 Dollar Swords, like Paul Chen's Practical Plus Elite, or John lee Katsumoto?

  • Not necessarily. As with many sub-$300 katanas, the polish, fit and blade sharpness are sometimes very 'hit and miss'.

I have sharper swords, and I've seen some that are razor sharp right out of the box. This one was fairly sharp for what it is ( 1st gen, TH Kawashima).

  • HAHAHAHAHAHA Shaving with a katana! Now thats a cool way of doing it :) Great video and very good looking sword.

  • Lol, he said to go back to your X-box. That is great. I like your style, in both our swordsmanship, and your comments. Oh, and the noddle things are a good idea. I will have to try them. They sure are cheaper then the mats ($65.00).

  • lol its nice that you listen to tenacious D, and awsome idia for tameshigiri, the pool noodels...i like it! C U around randy...

  • shaving with a katana? that takes some real badassery. props to you, man

  • LOL

naw, just some foolishness to amuse some friends.

  • either way, shaving with a katana is shaving with a katana. like eating nails with milk. and it certainly was amusing

  • Do you have your nipples pierced? Ouch! lol! Great sword! Your form in the beginning was nice too, don't listen the jerks who think they know what they're talking about. ;)

  • LOL Yes, just one.

  • lol, nice.

  • rofl man i tried shaving with mine a while back and had to get stitchs not kidding :S but fuck haha funny shit. and funny description yeh some nerds love there daydreaming of a dynasty they have no idea about. peace! keep the vids coming

  • lol i like your so many assholes to reply to bit. about technique though, and i'm not saying there's owt wrong with your technique [i don't have an x-box to go back to lol], but are those stack things really the best things to practice on? do you spar with practice swords with anyone?

  • Of course not. Tatami is traditionally used and gives the best feedback for cutting technique. I will be posting a video soon discussing tatami alternatives and why they are used ( tatami roll =$8 plus shipping , pool noodle =$1 and a 5 minute drive ).

I don't spar as I don't study anything but iaido and tameshigiri, which generally are practiced alone with the emphasis on perfecting technique and one's self.

  • oh okay... but surely having multiple tatami things all around you at different angles than just upright would help you to train transitions between each cut as you would need if the sword was used for its purpose in combat...? ach i dunno. as u can probably tell, i don't own a sword. well, i am only 16 after all. not that the age matters, i actually could buy a hanwei sword off the internet, but i'm abit skint [don't have the money atm lol]

  • Traditionally, the tatami is mounted upright. It was originally used to test the sword, centuries ago.Now it is just for recreation, sport, and discipline of the swordsman, much like the study of iaido. And it's lots of fun :-)

Best prices on GOOD swords like Hanwei and Dynasty Forge are at wiwingti sword supply ( online)

  • Isn't it great to have people telling you what you should be doing with your sword in your style, that is not their sword or their style? I could sit here all day and play cyber-samurai to everyone who posted a youtube video with a katana, but I have more of a life and an understanding of the literally hundreds of Japanese sword styles and ways of using the sword. It's just like religion, you don't push what you believe on other people...or at least I don't. :)

  • lol i wasn't tryin to push anything on him. i was just putting my thoughts past someone who knows what he's talking about.

i, like you, am opposed to pushing ideas on people, especially in religion. his reply on how tatami were originally used to test the sword makes sense to me.

as for Jeeperrandy himself: RE the last sentence, i'm in britain so it'd be cheaper for me to buy locally. shipping + customs is a nightmare. i'll probs buy from either medieval-weaponry or theknightshop.

  • Oh sorry, I didn't see that. Yeah, tatami was replacing the use of prisoners limbs for cutting.

  • youtube (dot) com/watch?v=_-e_3Xqx9nM

    speaking of cutting :)

  • It's not just Japanese sword styles that are out there, too. You have Korean styles, Vietnamese styles, German styles, Assyrian styles, etc. People today randomly pick up weapons and create their own schools for crying out loud.

  • dude ur pronouncing katana wrong....i thought i should let u kno since u won so many. im jealous i really want a katana. but since im so young my mom wont let me buy one :(

  • 'Ka ta na' . Not 'ka taw na', as many people think. The letter 'a' in Japanese pronunciation has only one sound ( unlike can, cane and Kahn in English). It is the 'a' sound as in the English word 'can' and 'Canada'.

My only mispronunciation with the word Katana is when I stress the second syllable, as no syllables are stressed in Japanese, It is a difficult language characteristic to master.

  • i kno. the stressed syllable was the only thing that caught my attention

  • Thanks for clearing that up.

  • your an odd one huh?

  • You have no idea! LOL.

  • I've never seen a such lack of respect for a sword.

Perhaps you don't deserve to own it.

    Seiko

  • Thank you for your comment. I own more than a half dozen beautiful and prized katanas. I take great care in their cleaning and maintenance.

The section of this video where I used it to shave was done as a joke, because the person I obtained it from remarked that it was sharp enough to shave with.. It's a $200 katana, not a $30,000 nihonto.Perhaps you need to take yourself less seriously and lighten up. You may enjoy life more.

    Peace.

  • You proved a great point there, haha.

Two things. One, what is the song called? And also, where can I buy a cheap "samurai outfit" like you are wearing during the cutting portion of this video?

  • The hakama (pants) are from onlinekendo ( dot com). You can also buy vintage silk hakamas on Ebay pretty cheap.

The song is 'Wonderboy' by Tenacious D .

  • I understand where you're coming from, but understand that it's his choice to have his own goals for use of the katana. It's just the people that are trying to keep the sword respectable as a weapon and not a toy that have to suffer for it.

  • It's fine to have your own 'goals for use of the katana' but telling me I don't deserve to own this mass produced low-end Chinese-made katana because I show it 'disrespect' is laughable. I don't need to be insulted by some cowardly Youtube noob hiding behind a phantom account just so he can make derogatory comments. Those are the idiots who do the real damage to our credibility.

  • better wear some jeans next time. the hakama does not match your sleeveless tshirt . or you could keep it and put on a proper gi . nice sword btw.

  • Thanks. I actually have many kimonos, haori's and several pair of vintage silk hakama. For this video I just wore what was comfortable for a hot summer day ( silk kimonos are very warm ).

Most of the time I dress appropriately.

  • no offense man, but the water and shaving cream is horrible for that sword...I hope you did a proper clean and oiling after otherwise that is very disrespectful to the sword, not to mention bad for it.

most decent live blades are $2,000 starting, if yours was I certainly hope you cleaned it.

remember the sword is an extension of your soul.

  • LOL. Okie dokie.

  • dont worry about the noodles dude, they're such a cheap alternative to the normal bamboo cutting mats, which are like 8 bucks a piece. not to mention they are much easier to start off with instead of going for the most difficult cutting material.

  • is that tenacious d at tha end?

  • Ya, I love a lot of their stuff

  • omfg i have tht katana dude its a very nice blade =3 but alas due to weather conditions it fell of its display and the shelf landed on it with books and other stuff and it bent mi tsuba i think its calld

i bent it back into placebut it rattles =[

  • nice mate nice...

  • Nice video!

  • if you have an indian oil stone you will be able to finish it off to a finer finish making it much sharper

  • ..the shaving part was great! - lots of people do not realize these swords are straight-razor sharp !! ..good stuff! :+]

  • lol clean shaven, check out my little ninja vid dude lol

    <
