This makes me so sad...It's funny how you feel like a kid for a secong when you see these old commercials. Makes me miss my Mom. Someone needs to invent a Time Machine. Too bad they don't make dreamy Christmas commercials anymore! This one is perfect! Hey, "nicevid did the backwards "R".
Thanks for posting. This was my favorite Toys R Us commercial growing up that they would broadcast during Christmas time. Something about it even when I was a kid watching felt poignant. Too bad they don't show it anymore,
At times I wished I didn't view this commercial. I forgot how much freedom as a child I had. But in all honesty, the kids today will grow up and say that these times were their best.
When i was little it was children's palace (child world), kaybee, and toys r us! now it's just toys r us with crappy toys and walmart :( man i miss the good ole days!
this is the commercial that got me all excited for Christmas when i was about 7 or 8 years old. damn near brings tears to my eyes remembering little things like this.
Wow, all these years I would sing that song in my head as i watched my kids open their presents wishing that they could experience the same kind of euphoria us '70's kids did. I guess I wasn't alone in that after all. Thanks for putting me in the Christmas Spirit!!!!
WOW. LOVE THIS COMMERCIAL. SINGING ALONG TO IT. I CAN STILL FEEL THAT SPECIAL FEELING. I HOPE IT BRINGS AS MUCH PEACE AND JOY TO EVERYONE AS IT DID FOR ME THESE PAST THIRTY SECONDS!!!!
Damn! What memories from Christmases past! Toys R Us was a way better store then than they are now. I have one near me and it's just not the same. In a way it looks smaller that what I remembered. As stated here: oh to be able to go back and relive those happy memories.
@cheapcape You are correct. Toys R Us certainly looked huge then compared to now. What's funny is that the store near me didn't change on the outside. To me it still looks the same size. I miss those days.
Wow, this brings happy tears to me! I remember as a kid in the 70's/80's seeing this commercial and getting excited for X-Mas! I'd give anything to go back in time, to a Christmas morning with mom cooking in the kitchen and getting all excited for the toys that I got. I feel bad for kids today, it's all computers and video games and it seems kids today aren't thankful for the things they get, like we were as kids. Ahh, but us children of yesteryear can smile with our memories knowing their ours!
@Idoljunky32 Thanks for your comment! I wish I could go back in time as well -- so many things I'd like to re-live or re-observe. We grew up at the right time, I think. So many things happened during that time.
@Idoljunky32 WOW..i cant think of anything to add to that..you took the words out of my mouth & heart i loved this commercial as a kid & i still do..i just had to find it so i can hear it again after sooo many years im still a kid @ heart..im thankful for the technology to be able to go back to listen & see these timeless classics..ahh we grew up at a good time!..lots of fun..it was different then!

Its good to know that I'm not the only one that remembers the wonderful memories of the Holidays seeing this commercial again. Its the reason why I love the Holidays to this day. @melh07302 I agree fully. I have tons of awesome memories during holidays growing up and indeed I wonder what kids today will think of them with all the commercialism circulating now. But from what I've observed, most kids want to know what holidays were like in the 70's, and they want holidays to be that way now. There is hope :)
@Idoljunky32 you said it perfectly. This takes me straight back to the late 70's as a kid. This commercial was just as good as any of the Christmas specials that used to come on.
Upon stumbling on this commercial, I decided to give it a look and like others it almost brought tears to my eyes. That was until the end of the video where it says "NOW IN YONKERS". I absolutely love this commercial at Christmas time when I was a little kid. This is the fourth or fifth Christmas season when I've gone back to YouTube to play it again.
Thanks for posting this! My dad passed away one year ago and just seeing this commercial again just brings back when I was 6 years old and seeing it for the first time.. That comfortable feeling.. Just knowing it was going to be christmas soon. Time goes by so fast... Slow down and ejoy every moment..
Happy Holidays all! And my all your wishes come true.
batteling tops , twister toss accross, and all the other games we had , remember sleigh riding on snow days ?? even making a few bucks shoveling snow to buy that new afx car that you drooled over! the sno cone maker , we just had the best toy through that golden age of toys stuff was durable too ! i can relate when i hear seniors talking about those were the good old days, when bread was five cents a loaf, the 60s and 70s will always be wonderful time that i had the pleasure of experiencing
Man! I remember this commercial. I wuz about 7 yrz old. Man i miss theez dayz. These were da golden yrz. Thk u 2 whomever put this commercial on Utube. Sumtymz it kool 2 go back n tym.
This was the best time growing up in the 70's early 80's this commercial brought back that warm fuzzy feeling. JC penny catalogs sears catalog writing that list to santa. the best times.
Oh, what fond memories this commercial has brought back! It was so much fun to be a kid back in the 70's. We had the best toys! We had the best time! I wouldn't want to be a kid today. Today it's all about video games and little electronic gadgets! Whatever happened to a good old fashioned electric train set? I sooo miss the 1970's.
@Catnip11147 Technology is a wonderful thing. But,I believe we will and are paying a dear price for it as well. Kids have forgotten how to play. Their imaginations are slowly withering away. All of their gadgets tell them what to do and how to play. And, you are so right about good old fashioned toys [G.I.joe, train sets.hot wheels, skates, plastic soldiers]. I would not trade away my memories of when we grew-up for anything. It was a magical time.
@regtoyz It is sad. Now we're seeing PSA's urging kids to do of all things, go out and play! Kids have to urged to go out and play! When we were kids, parents couldn't keep us indoors. We did our homework and our chores at lightning speed just so we can go and ride our bikes to the park. We had the time of our lives. I don't see kids doing that at all today. It was a magical time. And I also wouldn't trade those memories for anything!
@Catnip11147 Exactly. It's also about commercialism and greed now. When I was a kid at Christmas, it was about good meals, carols, lights, snow, family, friends and we were happy if all we got for presents were magnetic wheels because the biggest gift was the spirit this time of year gave us. I think it's more valuable than all the money on earth!
@cheapcape So true. Fortunately in my house, as in many houses all over the world, that tradition still exists. They can throw all of that mindless commercialism at us. It will never penetrate family Christmas time.
@cheapcape Well said... there is something about the spirit of the season that I will always love and cherish about Christmas. Seeing this commercial brings back the memories that made that foundation. I don't know what kids have today when looking forward towads the holidays
Walmart, Kmart and all other 'Marts; were the demise of the Local 'Main Street USA' Merchants. How many of You Baby Boomers remember going to Your neighborhood Toy Store and looking in the Window for that soecial toy you wanted Santa to bring. I embrace My Youth and growing up when it was easier. Agree?
@atomicsockhop Sad to see this is the lone toy store standing. After the Kay-Bee and FAO Schwartz are history this one is still kickin ass but the stores outside of the main one in NYC are soo much smaller than when I was a kid and they had mega space!!
i often times reminisce on my childhood. things were so much better when all you knew was candy, school, games lol. i suppose thats why i've remained so cheerful over these years. but man what i wouldnt give to go back in time to 1992. a day. hell i'd even settle for a a few minutes.
oh before i forget what kills the spirit of toys r us isnt walmart its the damn collectors that buy everything up and then goes on ebay to sell the shit thats what is wrong in the 70s and 80s you didnt have the ebay bullshit
i just want to make this very clear walmarts toy department sucks i work at walmart and i have worked at a few other walmarts and i have to say their toy department sucks its bad they are so far behind in toys its like this i have bought toys at toys r us and walmart wouldnt get the toys i buy until 6 months to 1 year later
one thing about toy r us what ever toy you wanted they would have it. you remember that famous orange price sticker on all the toys. i still have them on my action figures from the late 70s.
I remember seeing this commercial back in the late 1970s when I was a kid (I was born in 1969) One wonders why toys r us doesnt still play this commercial these years. Its fun, charming, nostalgic, delightful, and timeless.
I got teary eyed watching this commercial. It took me back to the day when my parents were Christmas shopping and they sneakly bought us the Atari 5200 but we saw it. When they closed down a few Toy R US stores I was hoping they didn't close the one my parents bought the Atari 5200 from because I have so many memories in that store. Thank god they never close it. I miss the 80's. Times were so much fun and better then, worries free. A time when kids were kids and not trying to grow up fast.
I'm very moved and happy and sad at the same time to see that this commercial moved so many to tears like it did me too! It speaks volumes about how wonderful the 70's and 80's were, and how terrible and sad times are today! I mean seriously! How sad are we, that we have to get used to the PC nonsense of today?!? I SO MISS THE 70'S!
Ah, one of the best toys r us commercials that ever was :-) Unfortunately, my family was way too poor to afford store bought toys, and these toys r us commercials, among other toy advertisements, absolutely made me ache. It was just as well since there were no toys r us stores in my neighborhood, at least that I knew of. I wouldnt step foot into an actual toys r us store untill my early teens, and even then I was just accompanying a friend. I still couldnt afford anything they had for sale.
What a wonderful time in my life, carefree, funloving, and no worries. Too bad time machines don't exist, or I'd take a trip back and stay! Well at least I can re-live the heartfelt memories with this ad. ~Thanks and Gods Blessings~.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
What a totally gay advert. You wouldn't find anything that corny on Australian TV, it just wouldn't happen. The septics are way too cheesy in my opinion.
This is probably my favorite Christmas commercial from when I was a little kid. But I remember growing up in Putnam County seeing the "Now In Yonkers" message at the bottom for a few years, LOL!!
I remember when this was brand new, no wonder the Beach Boys (I spelled it wrong so that's why I'm doing it over) and Toys R Us remind me of each other, with all the happy harmonies, thanks for bringing the memories back, I haven't heard it in ages.
this wwas brand new when I first saw it, now wonder Toys R Us and the Brach Boys remind me of each other, remembering that exact commercial with those happy harmonies I haven't heard in ages, thanks for bringing them back!!
This takes me back to when electric trains and AFX electric race car sets could be found on a young boys top wish list, but most importantly holiday commercials of this time and era still had family atmosphere and warmth, and yes.. it did bring a tear to my eye also at the age of 39.
I loved this commercial when I was little and the old tootsie roll commercial from the 70's. Too bad they don't make ads like these anymore. They were the BEST!
I saw this again about a year ago here on YouTube after wanting to see it since it last played in the late 70's/early 80's. Every Christmas I have hoped Toys R Us would dig into the vintage files and play this one. It's one of the BEST commericals ever in my opinon. Thanks to all of the people who have listed this video and many other vintage clips. You all make YouTube a blast!!!
Well, all I have to say is that when I first saw this commercial after 32 years later, it made me get all sentimental and cry. Yes, cry. This brought back some memories when I was a child growing up in harsh conditions in Chula Vista, CA and the only thing my sister and I looked forward to was X-mas. This commercial was my escape from my home that was going through hard times and always made me smile and wish for toys that my parents couldn't afford. Thank you for posting this video !
i hope your life is better now and that you are a good person.
i cant believe how powerful these adverts are to some people! i am sure i will feel the same way in 20 years when i see the old adverts again. (im 18), im guessing you guys are all in your early 40s late 30s
It's nostalgia, spartanator117. As you get older (I'm in my early forties), you tend to try to capture your lost youth. It's inevitable. The only thing that I try to avoid is "old fogieism" :-) and proclaim everything was great when I was a kid, while everything stinks today. While it may be true in some instances, it's definitely not true in others.
With that said, this was my favorite Christmas commercial as a child, even better than some of the McDonalds ones, IMO. Glad to see it again!
Geez, when I was 18 I would not have understood any of your words, but now that I'm in my 30's, your words are golden! I'd give just about anything to relive those excellent times, especially at Christmas!
what I like most about this commercial was its simple praise of family and the joy the christmas season brings. There's no real pitch of a particular toy. All we see is a family's love of gift giving.
This was the way ALL TRU were shaped. I don't think any of them are like that now. One of the last ones designed like that (here at the Bel-Air Shopping Center in Detroit) closed in 2000.
Love this ad. It takes me back to my childhood. I showed it to my 10 month old daughter. She clapped her hands around and was so happy seeing it. So glad I can show her this, it make me happy knowing that something that sparks nostalgia in me, can be passed on to her.
This is a very very special commercial. It definitely takes me back. I miss the late 70's and all the 80's generation tremendously. Thanks so much for posting.
This is a great example of why society today is so messed up, we've lost the simplicity of the past. Oh God, could you imagine a company (tru included)trying to sell a commercial, like this one, into todays market..It would never happen. This is one of maybe hundreds of reasons people of our generation (children of the 70's)long for those days. Life was simple!!!!!
This one took me back too. Sure makes you want to be a kid again. I remember this commercial playing every year, up until 1985. I wish commercials today were more like this one, and not the garbage we see now.
The older I get the more I get sad because things like this always were the norm for kids to see. Very simple yet exciting(to me at least). When you are able to look back to a period and be happy, the producers of the commerical did their job which was to capture the viewer
Damn this really makes me sad, this was when I was in preschool and I remembered the gift I wanted. It was a toysrus toy trailer and either a philidelphia phillies helmet(pete rose) and a roger staubach jersey lol.
This one really took me back. After I watched this, I briefly had a hard time coming back to 2007. It made me sad but in a reflective way. Shame that we can't physically go back in time and just visit - if only for a few minutes. Videos like this almost make it possible. Thanks so much!
I was around 4 years old when this commercial began running, at least according to the copyright on the vid. I lived only about 5 minutes away from the store in Yonkers that was noted as "Now Open" at the end of the clip. I love seeing this commercial, but also it makes me sad, as it seems like childhood was such a long time ago.
Thanks for the post. They don't make Christmas commercials like this anymore. Not since the whole politically correct thing and happy holidays took over. However commercials like this helped get you in the spirit. There's no mention of what's for sale or a particular item. Its about the season. And how it makes you feel.
What are you smoking?(last comment guy)

ya its strange how you get older and have kids and then wish you you were young again..i think its cuz, back then all you had to to is clean ur room and go to school..now working 50 hours a week seems like ur at work 24 hours a day..but its worth it to see your family happy

This was the best time growing up in the 70's early 80's this commercial brought back that warm fuzzy feeling. JC penny catalogs sears catalog writing that list to santa. the best times.
tdinc 2 years ago 2
Oh, what fond memories this commercial has brought back! It was so much fun to be a kid back in the 70's. We had the best toys! We had the best time! I wouldn't want to be a kid today. Today it's all about video games and little electronic gadgets! Whatever happened to a good old fashioned electric train set? I sooo miss the 1970's.

@Catnip11147 THE ABSOLUTE BEST.
gooboo1000 1 year ago
@Catnip11147 Technology is a wonderful thing. But,I believe we will and are paying a dear price for it as well. Kids have forgotten how to play. Their imaginations are slowly withering away. All of their gadgets tell them what to do and how to play. And, you are so right about good old fashioned toys [G.I.joe, train sets.hot wheels, skates, plastic soldiers]. I would not trade away my memories of when we grew-up for anything. It was a magical time.
regtoyz 1 year ago
@regtoyz It is sad. Now we're seeing PSA's urging kids to do of all things, go out and play! Kids have to urged to go out and play! When we were kids, parents couldn't keep us indoors. We did our homework and our chores at lightning speed just so we can go and ride our bikes to the park. We had the time of our lives. I don't see kids doing that at all today. It was a magical time. And I also wouldn't trade those memories for anything!
Catnip11147 1 year ago 5
@Catnip11147 Yeah, in the seventies I was happy just to get a magnetic wheel! But the memories are priceless..
cheapcape 1 year ago 3
@Catnip11147 Exactly. It's also about commercialism and greed now. When I was a kid at Christmas, it was about good meals, carols, lights, snow, family, friends and we were happy if all we got for presents were magnetic wheels because the biggest gift was the spirit this time of year gave us. I think it's more valuable than all the money on earth!
cheapcape 2 months ago 3
@cheapcape So true. Fortunately in my house, as in many houses all over the world, that tradition still exists. They can throw all of that mindless commercialism at us. It will never penetrate family Christmas time.
Catnip11147 2 months ago 3
@Catnip11147 Same here, yes it's best to make Christmas our own now.
cheapcape 2 months ago
@cheapcape Well said... there is something about the spirit of the season that I will always love and cherish about Christmas. Seeing this commercial brings back the memories that made that foundation. I don't know what kids have today when looking forward towads the holidays

@atomicsockhop Sad to see this is the lone toy store standing. After the Kay-Bee and FAO Schwartz are history this one is still kickin ass but the stores outside of the main one in NYC are soo much smaller than when I was a kid and they had mega space!!

I remember seeing this commercial back in the late 1970s when I was a kid (I was born in 1969) One wonders why toys r us doesnt still play this commercial these years. Its fun, charming, nostalgic, delightful, and timeless.
classicphile 2 years ago 4
I got teary eyed watching this commercial. It took me back to the day when my parents were Christmas shopping and they sneakly bought us the Atari 5200 but we saw it. When they closed down a few Toy R US stores I was hoping they didn't close the one my parents bought the Atari 5200 from because I have so many memories in that store. Thank god they never close it. I miss the 80's. Times were so much fun and better then, worries free. A time when kids were kids and not trying to grow up fast.

I'm very moved and happy and sad at the same time to see that this commercial moved so many to tears like it did me too!

What a totally gay advert. You wouldn't find anything that corny on Australian TV, it just wouldn't happen. The septics are way too cheesy in my opinion.

I saw this again about a year ago here on YouTube after wanting to see it since it last played in the late 70's/early 80's. Every Christmas I have hoped Toys R Us would dig into the vintage files and play this one. It's one of the BEST commericals ever in my opinon.

(im 18), im guessing you guys are all in your early 40s late 30s
spartanator117 3 years ago
It's nostalgia, spartanator117. As you get older (I'm in my early forties), you tend to try to capture your lost youth. It's inevitable. The only thing that I try to avoid is "old fogieism" :-) and proclaim everything was great when I was a kid, while everything stinks today. While it may be true in some instances, it's definitely not true in others.
With that said, this was my favorite Christmas commercial as a child, even better than some of the McDonalds ones, IMO. Glad to see it again!

Yeah man, We were sorta poor when i was a child. I would see these commercials and it sorta sucked.
I remember Zany Zappers, Yo Balls, Magic Sand, Underoo's... Electric race tracks and such.

The older I get the more I get sad because things like this always were the norm for kids to see. Very simple yet exciting(to me at least). When you are able to look back to a period and be happy, the producers of the commerical did their job which was to capture the viewer

I was around 4 years old when this commercial began running, at least according to the copyright on the vid. I lived only about 5 minutes away from the store in Yonkers that was noted as "Now Open" at the end of the clip. I love seeing this commercial, but also it makes me sad, as it seems like childhood was such a long time ago.
trace123321 5 years ago
Thanks for the post. They don't make Christmas commercials like this anymore. Not since the whole politically correct thing and happy holidays took over. However commercials like this helped get you in the spirit. There's no mention of what's for sale or a particular item. Its about the season. And how it makes you feel.
