( Both made in 2008. In July to be even more precise. ) I had the RROD twice, but never had any problem with my PS3, other than having to clean it, had to clean my xbox too.

Everything else I pretty much play on my 360 slim, not because the graphics are better,, because A: I prefer the 360 controller (We aren't small handed asians lol) and B: I prefer playing my games on Xbox Live.

To explain the xbox is basicly a high end computer motherboard and if you look at a computer motherboard you will see that the CPU sits in a socket and the heatsink is attached to the CPU with a fan only. the CPU & heatsink fan and grease are joined together as a unit, But with the Xbox the CPU & heatsink is joined to the motherboard with x-clamps & screws any board flexing from heat will void the heatsink grease and that is why you need to re-apply after the red rings. Shame on you Microsoft!!

don't do this it's a bunch of crap!!!if you look at your motherboard you have the same chips on the top of the board, the foam padding on the bottom chips are for protection from the case only they are NOT heatsinks you would be better off sticking pennies in your nose not on your xbox, I have been working on xbox's for years and have done tests on all parts of the xbox, the xbox is just a bad design and crap and if you have not had the pleasure of having the red rings don't worry you will.

I just took apart an Xbox 360.. older style, like the one pictured. (The heatsinks are mounted different on newer Xbox's)

The logic behind this fix has no merit. The rubber or foam feet on the bottom of the chips you are applying the pennies to DO NOT DISPERSE HEAT. They are not meant to, by design. IF those chips were getting hot and that was really causing the red ring, those 4 rubber feet would be melted to the board. So IF this fix happens to work for you, it has zero to do w/ pennies.

I'm not a thumbs up whore (far from it), but I really think people could benefit from seeing this:

NEVER spread thermal paste. If you spread it, then bubbles of air get trapped between the hard surfaces. What you want is an absolutely TINY blob of paste in the middle, for absolutely zero air pockets. Trust me on this. Google if you don't. The research is there.

Also, this penny trick works because it relieves tension, NOT because it conducts heat. Yes, it works, but their reasons are wrong.

The towel trick is probably not needed to reset the red ring of death. You can just reset it (even before fixing the problem) by turning it on, getting the 3 red ring of death, unplugging the AV cord, rebooting, getting a 4 red ring, then plugging it back in. (hopefully getting no red ring if timed right). However, it will freeze after 2 minutes of gaming until it is actually fixed. (I am working on reflowing mine)

Oh dear oh dear even more shit about how to fix these things.As for them not knowing about heatsinks its not these chips that cause the problem its the " processers" BGAs on the other side. the towel trick is why this works get the thing so hot it almost reflows the dry joints on the BGAs. all the youtube repairs are non permanent fixes the only way to fix it properly is to reflow BGA devices in a reflow oven or on a BGA rework station. Unless your handy with a heatgun.
