I hope that wasn't the rod you used for your test. If you can touch 7018 with your bare hands without burning yourself those are junk. And wheres your landing? Every test I've taken I've always had to have a landing with no more than an 1/8th inch gap.
you could also do single passes like about 4 to 5 and use two rods for the cap weld half of the cap with one and weld the rest of the cap with the other (i know this works cuz i passed my tests doing it this way)
if any one has tips for me i would love to hear them please!!! im taking my 3g smaw right now and i was told to us e7010 for my root pass and e7018 (2.6mm) on my hot passes and than e7018 (3.2mm) for my capping.. is this true? or should i us e7018 on all my passes? and what amperage should i us for my one inch 3g cert?? i'm using 105 right now and its looking good but for the real test i know the instuctor whats righter amps...??? please i would love to get some tips... thanks.
i took almost an hour doing passes... i gotta take a test tomorrow for a job and i havent touched a rod, let alone done any iron work in over a year... 'gulp'
it shouldnt take 8 passes to fill that gap. is that a 15 degree bevel angle, with a 1/4 inch gap? if your using .045 E71T1 wire it should take 3, a root pass, a fill, and a cap. thats if you set your welder to the high side of the spray arc transfer, about 26.2 volts and 370 ipm.

Tip: If you take your test on one inch steel, you are certified to weld unlimited thickness.
