@Zaranyzerak yeah sorry I didn't make it clear enough, what I meant by it was the fact that you were talking about serials continuing on from one another. It would have been the perfect example to use, either that or the sixth doctor series the trial of a timelord which all follow each other. Sorry for any miss understanding.
great video in 1970's the bbc destoyed the early episodes of william hartnell and patrick troughton episodes also some of jon pertwee episodes in black and white.
what was the 1981 or 82 Sci-Fi brit film with the space turtles that stood upright ? they were like majestic with big eyes and the story was very cerebral and it was featured on PBS in like 4 parts.
brill vlog.the us dr who dvd covers look much better then our uk covers.i just bought mannequin mania box set that has terror of the autons and spearhead from space.what do you think of sliders.
british sci fi is the best when it comes to storytelling, plot, dialogue, and character development. american sci fi is good when it comes to special effects and quality actors along with more efficent production. if the BBC would only have supported and financed their sci fi shows like the americans do all those great shows like blakes 7, sapphire and steel, UFO, space 1999 ect; would have all those american sci fi shows seriously running for their money.
hey zaranuzerak im from the uk and have watched quiet a few of your videos and im a really big fan of doctor who and i think its one of the best sci fi tv shows eva and i know this videos quiet old now so are you going to do a another doctor who dvd update video thing loool
zaneyzarek - yeah seeds of doom came out in the uk last month, i guess it will hit the u.s real soon. The next rleases fpor the uk are Meglos in january and then the mutants (jon pertwee story) at the end of jan. I believe febuary is kinda/snake dance (peter davison). Also look out for a newly cgi'd Day of the daleks (pertwee) in the summer. These are all in the uk so im guessing you'll be around the same time in the states.
@Russell230870 Yep, all of those have already been announced for U.S. release too, so looks like we're finally on pretty much the same schedule. Now I just need to set aside a couple grand so I can get all the volumes I don't have yet...lol! :)
@Zaranyzerak yeah the first 2-3 seasons of Tom Baker are really good but then it seems a bit to much technobabble and gets complex but the first season is definantly the best, harry, sarh and the doctor are a great trio of character sand the chemistry works very well
he shouldn't not be doing those things.. it takes itself too seriously too now, in a way that it didn't do before. they have messed it up and the music doesnt work, the music they use. they seem to have changed the theme and use a orchestra. it didn't work for halloween and it doesnt work for dr who. as u recall hallween h20 had a orchestral score whe they should have used electronic organ, so too this dr who of today's era. orchestral dr who theme has nothing what the old theme /score had
@BRm2008 I think it works great. I've heard a lot of orchestral interpretations of the theme before, but the recent ones have been the best versions by far (the original theme is actually mixed IN it). The new theme actually goes back to the synthy roots more. While it does take some serious turns, the sense of fun is most definitely back. There were times when the old series took itself pretty seriously too (Logopolis? Caves of Androzani?). Guessing you haven't watched the most recent season?
@Zaranyzerak it makes iT ordinary and the same old american way. there used to be something unique about dr who having that kind of music now its quite watered down now to please the masses and quite frankly several episodes are plain ridiculous coupled with the massive amount of cgi over practical effects.. and all thius teleporting and average ppl getting in on the act and young companions carrying big guns .. well its gotton plain ridiculous.. i can suspend disbelief . but this.?
@BRm2008 Like I said, if there hadn't been such a lengthy absence, I'm sure it wouldn't be much different by this point, it just would have been a more gradual transition. The original series had its share of ridiculous episodes too (The Krotons? Time and the Rani?) They use CGI because it's cheaper and lets them do more than they could otherwise on their budget. I prefer practical effects too, but get why they do it that way. I think it's still very British. The '96 movie it isn't.
@BRm2008 One thing I would actually like to see in the new series is giving OTHER composers a shot at scoring, mix it up a bit. The old series usually had 3-4 composers per season, who would alternate. Kept things interesting and fresh, no two scores were ever alike. I like Murray Gold's work on the show, but would love to hear some other composers get a chance to do something interesting, like the old days.
the new dr wgho has oveer the top music and my god kissing chicks and that stuff. dnt fly with me thats just slys in the face of what the show is about. it dont work like that. its not the real show for me. '89 going back.. he menat to be a presit like guy with a sonic screwwdriver
@BRm2008 He doesn't like, make out with them. When he's kissed them it's been for a reason. And...he still uses the Sonic Screwdriver. I just see it as the show doing what it always did before - changing with the times. Probably just seems more drastic because there was an 18 year gap between the old series and the new, but if it had been going continuously I'm sure it wouldn't be much different than what we're seeing now, just a more gradual change. Doing it old-style wouldn't fly now.
@Zaranyzerak yea exactly. It has too be more modern for modern audiences to watch. its gotta be more family friendly so it gets more viewers, that way it wont get cancelled like in 1989. sadly in the 80s it shouldn't of got cancelled. Those 7th doc eps were all awesome! Legendary! Good!
@Smallvillenerd Yeah, I really enjoyed the darker, more mysterious tone the series took in the 1989 season (Curse of Fenric and Ghost Light are two faves of mine) and was eager to see where it would go next...then it was cancelled. :P
@BRm2008 true true but what is so bad about the score? its nothing to worry about. I reckon the old score makes old who feel dated to me. But i still love it! just get over it and enjoy the show
"No one does Sci-Fi like the Brits....No One" Wow! a compliment from an American!! I thank you on behalf of my fellow countrymen! Normally all I see are pathetic arguments between countries over wars long in the past!
@kamelion7 Canadian, actually. ;) And you're most welcome! I've always loved British television. Some of the finest writing and acting in the world. And some of the best sci-fi. :)
@Zaranyzerak Oh sorry!! Never could distinguish a Canadian accent from an American one!! Do you take that as an insult? If so I apologise. Alot of Londoners like me get mistaken for Australians by some Americans and it does grate a bit :-)
@kamelion7 The best description I ever heard of how to distinguish a Canadian from and American was from the Kids in the Hall: "I'm Canadian. It's like an American, except we don't carry guns." :D most people just assume i'm American unless they hear me say "about." Yeah, bit of a cliche, but it's true - we say it a bit different apparently. I love it when someone calls me a "Stupid American." I always correct them, "Stupid Canadian, actually." :D
@Zaranyzerak Wasn't that the Brain Candy film? Where everyone was in a trance and that woman was stuck in the happiest point of her life - dancing to Lipps Incs 'Funky Town'!! If so that was hilarious!! If not you must think I've gone completely insane....
@kamelion7 Hehehe...no, you're not insane (well maybe you are, but not for that). Brain Candy was the theatrical film they did a couple of years after the series ended. Wonderful, dark humor. A lot of people hated it, I thought it was bloody brilliant. The series was actually a sketch comedy show along the lines of Monty Python. VERY funny, I actually rank it alongside Monty Python as one of my favorite sketch comedy shows.
@kamelion7 Yea you are insane. Maybe thats why you are such a british faggot sucking his Grandma's english teabags. Stop being so racist to me and i'll stop to you ok?
Whats with the covers?, there horrible, why do North America get all those horrible covers on DVD's and video games??? You've mentioned Brit 70's Sci Fi, you didn't mention Sapphire and Steel, you have of course seen it??.
@manmonkee The earlier releases used different covers, the more recent ones use the exact same cover art as the UK versions, just without the roundels. So we actually get a little more art on our covers than the UK version sometimes. Heard of Sapphire and Steel, haven't seen it.
@Russell230870 Seeds of Doom has finally been announced for R1 release. Looks like they're trying to time the UK and US releases so they all come out around the same time now (give or take a month).
@Zaranyzerak but sadly, they dont care for us aussies btw Revenge of the Cybermen came out this month and i think (in australia they have these cool boxsets with multible stories and really good cover art) its being released with The Silver Nemesis (classic cybermen story in McCoy's era) so just wanted to tell you
@Zaranyzerak im in australia so we're region 4 and we get thing slike a month or two months after and im pretty sure we still haven't got the Dominators yet :( Dr who is the best sci fi show i've ever seen. i love Inferno, Caves fo Androzani, War Games and Genesis of the Daleks your favourite??
The region 2 BBC DVDs don't actually have serial numbers printed on them instead they have the broadcast dates printed in tiny letters on the back cover. Except, for some reason "City of Death". Guess that's the fault of the proof reader.
@BillyIsATwat23 We get the airdates on the Region 1 versions too. Which I guess is fine to figure out the order, but it's a lot easier just to have the nice, big, obvious numbers.
Great stuff, really interesting to see an American perspective on British sci-fi!
Have you ever seen Blake's 7? I think you'd love it - until it all goes a bit wonky in series 3, it's an incredibly dark, nihilistic sci-fi series, which was one of the influences for Babylon 5 (in terms of having an ongoing story).
Oh, and it's got one of the bleakest finales ever - I saw it at the age of 11, and it scarred me for life!
Loved Blake's 7! I really wish we'd get the DVD sets out here. When I was about 19, one of the local stations was showing it two episodes back to back every week. Definitely a shocker of a finale!
Have you got a multi-region DVD player? It might be worth ordering the UK box sets.
Sky 1, our major satellite / cable network over here, has been talking about a big-budget sequel / reboot for years now, here's hoping!
I'd recommend Gerry Anderson's 'UFO' - totally ahead of it's time, it predates the adult sci-fi of Battlestar, etc by 30-odd years, despite the fashions in the series, and it being set in the futureworld of, erm... 1980. Great stuff.
Excellent collection and video! If you don't have it already, you should check out the E-Space Trilogy from the Baker era.
I agree that no one does sci-fi and history as well as the Brits. I was in Britain last year, and there is something about the place that fuels the imagination.
Great vid zaranyzerak, I'd love to see your Doctor Who disambiguation video someday. Maybe you could review a specific story you have on dvd or something in the meantime.
i collect 2 i have about thirty my first being the invasion and my latetest one being the war games my top three doctor are 5, 3 and 2 i love the old show its awesome i could go on for hours and have done but not today...... you should do a doctor who centered video cous i enjoyed ure transformers fan video as i have recently began to watch the animated show and cant get the theme song out of my head
I first watched Red Dwarf back in 1989 when it aired on one of the local stations. I then bought the first 7 Series' on VHS, joined the Official Fan Club, and bought all the novels. I now have all 8 series' on DVD. In other words, yes I've seen Red Dwarf. ;)
They don't number the stories on region 2 which is a shame but on the region 1's they don't have art work on the spine, then wasn't an insault it just shows that the two regions are different.
when you smiled after metioning the title of the video you looked exactly like Rimmer in "Quarantine" when he's telling cat,Kryten and mainly lister about the sprouts menu he has for them lol
Yep! I've got the entire series on Laserdisc. There's actually a Blu-ray set of The Prisoner coming out soon, remastered from the original film elements! Amazing show, watched it many times.
Hi I live in england and i am 15 years old and doctor who is my life we have so much in common, the dvd covers in america are different covers than the ones over here, as in the classics. I feel the classic series is better than than the new one. I do feel it is better to do it in episodes, and the british ones do not have the episode number on them. I think that you are really cool. Hartnell is may favourite doctor.
Being a huge Doctor Who fan myself, I loved the way the TARDIS materialised at the start of the video. I'm also collecting the dvd's in my own weird order best known to myself.
As far as hi-def goes I'm the other way round to you, I have a hi-def 1080p LCD tv which is pretty fine, but I havn't yet upgraded to blu-ray co I really don't know how i feel about having to buy my entire dvd collection again on another format.
Being British I can't see the appeal of Doctor Who just because the BBC don't have the budget really to produce a high quality show.. Sci-Fi need big bucks.. I'm a bit anti BBC because I don't understand why I have to pay for a service I don't use... I tend to get my TV fixs from pretty much all the channel with have accept the BBC simply because there nothing on there that really appeals to me..
This was utterly brilliant. At last someone talking sense about British Sci-fi, lets hope you've started a trend. I would be interested on your take on the US DVD release schedule compared to the UK. I have been told its always slower.
One question, on a personal note, ARE YOU MY CLONE???
I haven't actually seen much of Gerry Anderson's stuff, a few eps of Thunderbirds and Captain Scarlett back in the day, and I know I used to watch Space: 1999 when I was a kid, but couldn't tell you anything about it! I remember being blown away by the model work, though. Even as a kid.
I'll go on a binge of all those at some point, maybe once the cartoons calm down a bit.
I'd really like to grab The Invaders - Roy Thinnes is an awesome actor. I think there were only the two seasons, iirc.
Nope, Blake's 7 has only been released in Region 2. Which sucks... It WAS released on VHS over here back in the day, but as of yet no sign of us getting the superb DVD release that R2 got. :(
I would like to see more of the stories released in boxed sets. The three Pertwee Dalek stories would be great. I would like to see a Leela boxed set with Face of Evil, Image of the Fendahl,The Sunmakers and Underworld. That way I could complete some of my seasons and have episodes that I really want. By the way I loved the Family Guy joke too.
Yes thank you, I know. The original series ran from 1963-1989, with an 18 month hiatus in 1985. There was a Fox TV movie in 1996, and finally the new series which began in 2005. I was simply stating in this video that I PREFER the 70's era of the show, as I think it was the most well written and had the best portrayals of The Doctor.
What is your alltime favorite Doctor Who Stories.....Please dont mention any of the up to date Doctor Who stories....my favorites are: Genesis of the Daleks Seeds of Doom Pyramids of Mars Robots of Death, The Caves of Androzani The Androids of Tara Inferno The Sea Devils Terror of the Zygons...........I am right next door to Britain, and although I always had BBC 1 & 2, I have never seen Tripods, The Tommorrow People or Doomwatch.
One outstanding Brit Sci-Fi effort I haven't heard you mention is 5 Million Years to Earth. That's one of those films that stuck with me for years until I finally remembered it when I was in a place to find it. Along with Robinson Crusoe on Mars, amongst some of the great underrated sci-fi flicks. I looked for RCoM for years until the owner finally released it on DVD.
That was pretty cool. This is the first time I've seen one of these so I'm impressed that you actually talked about The Tomorrow People! Do you have any where your focus is strickly on them? But love the Doctor Who stuff. My brother got mother and I into it in the 70's so now she and I LOVE the new series. (He doesn't but we do.)
I've heard a lot of good things about that set, except there's a couple of problems - it's only available on Region 2 DVD (I'm in a Region 1 area), and I tend to steer away from the boxed sets that span several Doctors since I like to have all the stories organized chronologically on my shelf... But thanks for the recommendation! Was GREAT to see Davros finally back in the latest new series too!
I know, I always get it messed up...hehehe. As for Red Dwarf, I've had all 8 Series' for a while now! Including the limited edition set of Series 8 that came with the little skutter. :) If you look at my DVD Collection videos from a while ago (the ones that cover the Sci-Fi section) you can see them on my British Sci-Fi shelf between Day of the Triffids and The Tomorrow People. :) Well, minus the deluxe packaging for Series 8. That's put away because it takes up too much space otherwise.
I was gonna ask about the DVDs. where abouts are the Regeion 1 DVD's sold? What one has booklets? And are they all the same special features? Thanks =]
Region 1 is sold in the U.S. and Canada. All the features are identical to the Region 2 versions, but alas we don't get the booklets. No idea why... :(
Well guess what! I got my first doctor who classic DVD today! Doctor who- The Hand of Fear- And it was great. I put the subtitles on cos every second of speech theres something important! Thanks anyway =]
Nice! That was a good one. And yes, I can understand how the sub-titles might help - the dialogue can be quite rapid-fire sometimes! Especially in the newer series. Hehehe...
If you like Tom Baker (and who doesn't!), I recommend pretty much anything from his first few seasons (pretty much anything with Sarah Jane or Leela as the companions) if you want to really see the best stuff from his era. Great stories, and his performance is just sooo much fun to watch! :)
I also got John Pertwee's first story, Sperehead from Space. But the ones I would really like to get are Planet of Evil and most of all, Robot. I also want Terror of the Autons, Terror of the Zygons and Planet of the Spiders to be released on DVD. When Tom Baker left, it really was, for me (Apart from the new series =p), The end of Good Doctor Who. I'm only looking to get Tom Baker and John Pertwee's DVD's.
Yep, I know a lot of fans who feel the same way! Myself, I like a lot of the later stories too, but the Jon Pertwee/Tom Baker eras were the ones with the real "magic," as it were. Everything just came together so perfectly in that period, and for that reason it will always be my favorite too. Terror of the Zygons and Terror of the Autons are probably the BIG two I'm waiting for. Especially Zygons - it was one of my earliest stories, and it scared the HELL out of me as a kid! :)
Yes, and also they were most popular too. The Fifth Doctor wasn't too bad, but I can't stand the Sixth and Seventh. It was too 1980's and 'Electric'. Also there were a lot of the complicated space stuff!!
Well, on the empireonline forums people were saying that on a SD tv the picture is black and white. People were confirming it so i just wanted to know if this was true? Obviously not...
Well, I'm using a PS3 so that might make the difference, since it was intended (in part) to be a "transition" system for people. So you can still play HD games on a SDTV, with the added bonus of it also being able to downconvert BluRay discs to SD. Maybe the B&W issue occurs with standalone BluRay players being hooked up to SDTV's? This is the first I've heard of such an issue, actually.
I strongly disagree (I think they're visually tacky and cluttered), I prefer the clean, uniform look of the spines and the consistency of the logo color on the R1 covers, but hey - beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Plus we both get the same artwork now - just the cover style is different.
They don't look to bad, it's just you get a shuddy build quality with the region 1 DVD boxes, plus you don't get any booklets with region 1 Doctor Who DVDs.
Canadian DVD's are by far the WORST. I hate the bilingual french packaging so much, that I flat out refuse to buy DVD's at all, aside from the odd $4 bargain bin dumps.
Are the Canadian Blu-rays suffering the same fate?
Yep, looks like BluRay's are getting the same treatment in Canada... :P I wish more manufacturers would just do the reversible covers - All English on one side, all French on the other. Then we can have it however we want on our shelves.
The worst are the ones that have English/French on one side, then French/English on the other. One that comes to mind is Rush Hour 2, my copy at least.
They should take a cue from PS2 and Cube publishers. Release a bilingual slip over top of the case and then re-wrapped again in shrinkwrap.
As always saved by Zaranyzerak hahahahaha thanks a lot sean ill catch them up. What about millenium the series??? never saw one single episode of that one and for that matter never saw one episode of xfiles either aliens rules! dallas is my man. I do have the terminator movies and the Extreme edition of T2 but the paper one not the tin one as yours
The Terminator movies (once again, make sure you get the extended version of the second one - it's vastly superior to the theatrical version)
Event Horizon (people seem to be mixed on this one, but I enjoyed it. One of the scariest sci-fi flicks I've ever seen)
Clash of the Titans (legendary stop motion animator Ray Harryhausen's take on Greek Mythology. If you like old school effects, this is one of the best)
That should tide you over nicely for a while. :) Oh, and if you get Blade Runner, get The Final Cut version. Or go for the uber boxed set briefcase edition, which has no less than FIVE versions of the movie and a bajillion extras. :)
Greetings please help me out i am ready to place a new order on amazon and I need a multimedia chronicles recommendation to complete the list. Up until now i been adding Horror titles to my collection so adding some Sci Fi will be nice for a change need your comments could be any film or series (note that i have all the star wars, trek, matrix, etc) I need something refreshing
One: I'm not a Dr. Who fan HOWEVER I'm glad you got the show on DVD and will be referring this video to a few people I KNOW who are fans.
Two: I too have a PS3 and use it on a SDTV(plan on upgrading to HDTV within a month or 2) and I can back up your statement to say it DOES look so good on a SDTV.
I first saw Doctor Who in 1988 when I lived in England as a kid. It totally creeped me out, but it was freaking awesome. I recently started to get into Dr Who thanks to the wonders of the internet. Its now by far my favorite television show. There are so many different eras and actors its hard for it to get old. I think I actually prefer it to Star Trek now.
Really enjoyed this update. I've watched Doctor Who since the first episode and it was pretty pioneering for its' time. The title music and visuals set the tone for the series and one of the things that made the earlier series more exciting for me was that the Doctor had limited control of the TARDIS never knowing where it would take them next. I was 7 when it started and I remember being a bit frightened of William Hartnell and the first appearance of the Daleks captivated me."EXTERMINATE!!!"
That's right! Can't believe I missed that one... There's actually a nifty Easter Egg on there that summarizes all of the firsts in that story, there were quite a few!
I don't have Pyramids or Robots yet (they're two of my faves too, especially Robots), I'm trying to collect the Tom Baker stories in order, so they're actually next on the list! :) Along with Hand of Fear and the Horror of Fang Rock. Then Invasion of Time a little later this year...
I'm holding off on the Key to Time saga, though, since they just put out an uber-deluxe remastered edition in the U.K. that will likley find its way here at some point. WAAAYYYY more extras than the old R1 set, should be well worth the wait.
Well, when I first got into DVD I starting collecting DVDs a full YEAR before I even had a player. So no, I'll be buying BluRay for all new releases from this point on if it's an option. A short while to be without the picture quality is better than having NO discs to watch when we finally get the TV.
Cool! If you enjoy sci-fi that's just a helluva lot of FUN to watch, then Doctor Who is great. you MIGHT want to start with the newer series, since it can be a bit more "accesible" for new viewers. But make sure you start with Series 1 of the new series, since there's a pretty tight continuity that runs the entire length of the series so far (they're currently in the middle of Series 4).
If you're looking to give the old series a shot, you'll probably find Tom Baker (4th Doctor) of Jon Pertwee (3rd Doctor) the most accessible to start off with, plus those are the two Doctors where they really set up a lot of the history of the series that has stuck with it to this day (lots about the Time Lords and whatnot). Just don't expect modern production value...hehehe. The effects may be laughable at times, but DAMN the stories and characters are great! :)
No idea if there will be a Doctor Who movie, although there are 4 specials (which are like short movies) next year. Considering they had the POWER OF GOD in tow of the previous Indy movies, if anything I find aliens more plausible - so I don't get why people are in a stink about that. I'd probably say Indy would win against Han, simply because Han seems to win by dumb luck most of the time, Indy seems more "skilled." Against Lara, though, I'd say Lara would win because she's a better fighter.
british doctor who cover are better!

he shouldn't not be doing those things.. it takes itself too seriously too now, in a way that it didn't do before. they have messed it up and the music doesnt work, the music they use. they seem to have changed the theme and use a orchestra. it didn't work for halloween and it doesnt work for dr who. as u recall hallween h20 had a orchestral score whe they should have used electronic organ, so too this dr who of today's era. orchestral dr who theme has nothing what the old theme /score had
BRm2008 1 year ago
@BRm2008 I think it works great. I've heard a lot of orchestral interpretations of the theme before, but the recent ones have been the best versions by far (the original theme is actually mixed IN it). The new theme actually goes back to the synthy roots more. While it does take some serious turns, the sense of fun is most definitely back. There were times when the old series took itself pretty seriously too (Logopolis? Caves of Androzani?). Guessing you haven't watched the most recent season?
Zaranyzerak 1 year ago
@Zaranyzerak it makes iT ordinary and the same old american way. there used to be something unique about dr who having that kind of music now its quite watered down now to please the masses and quite frankly several episodes are plain ridiculous coupled with the massive amount of cgi over practical effects.. and all thius teleporting and average ppl getting in on the act and young companions carrying big guns .. well its gotton plain ridiculous.. i can suspend disbelief . but this.?
BRm2008 1 year ago
@BRm2008 Like I said, if there hadn't been such a lengthy absence, I'm sure it wouldn't be much different by this point, it just would have been a more gradual transition. The original series had its share of ridiculous episodes too (The Krotons? Time and the Rani?) They use CGI because it's cheaper and lets them do more than they could otherwise on their budget. I prefer practical effects too, but get why they do it that way. I think it's still very British. The '96 movie it isn't.
Zaranyzerak 1 year ago
@BRm2008 One thing I would actually like to see in the new series is giving OTHER composers a shot at scoring, mix it up a bit. The old series usually had 3-4 composers per season, who would alternate. Kept things interesting and fresh, no two scores were ever alike. I like Murray Gold's work on the show, but would love to hear some other composers get a chance to do something interesting, like the old days.
Zaranyzerak 1 year ago
the new dr wgho has oveer the top music and my god kissing chicks and that stuff. dnt fly with me thats just slys in the face of what the show is about. it dont work like that. its not the real show for me. '89 going back.. he menat to be a presit like guy with a sonic screwwdriver
BRm2008 1 year ago
@BRm2008 He doesn't like, make out with them. When he's kissed them it's been for a reason. And...he still uses the Sonic Screwdriver. I just see it as the show doing what it always did before - changing with the times. Probably just seems more drastic because there was an 18 year gap between the old series and the new, but if it had been going continuously I'm sure it wouldn't be much different than what we're seeing now, just a more gradual change. Doing it old-style wouldn't fly now.
Zaranyzerak 1 year ago
@Zaranyzerak yea exactly. It has too be more modern for modern audiences to watch. its gotta be more family friendly so it gets more viewers, that way it wont get cancelled like in 1989. sadly in the 80s it shouldn't of got cancelled. Those 7th doc eps were all awesome! Legendary! Good!
Smallvillenerd 1 year ago
@Smallvillenerd Yeah, I really enjoyed the darker, more mysterious tone the series took in the 1989 season (Curse of Fenric and Ghost Light are two faves of mine) and was eager to see where it would go next...then it was cancelled. :P
Zaranyzerak 1 year ago
@Zaranyzerak i licked the mccoy era. every ep was cheesy bt classic and very obvious it was the 80s especially with Ace.
Smallvillenerd 1 year ago

Alot of Londoners like me get mistaken for Australians by some Americans and it does grate a bit :-)
kamelion7 1 year ago

If not you must think I've gone completely insane....
kamelion7 1 year ago
@kamelion7 Hehehe...no, you're not insane (well maybe you are, but not for that). Brain Candy was the theatrical film they did a couple of years after the series ended. Wonderful, dark humor. A lot of people hated it, I thought it was bloody brilliant. The series was actually a sketch comedy show along the lines of Monty Python. VERY funny, I actually rank it alongside Monty Python as one of my favorite sketch comedy shows.

Whats with the covers?, there horrible, why do North America get all those horrible covers on DVD's and video games??? You've mentioned Brit 70's Sci Fi, you didn't mention Sapphire and Steel, you have of course seen it??.
manmonkee 1 year ago
@manmonkee The earlier releases used different covers, the more recent ones use the exact same cover art as the UK versions, just without the roundels. So we actually get a little more art on our covers than the UK version sometimes. Heard of Sapphire and Steel, haven't seen it.

The region 2 BBC DVDs don't actually have serial numbers printed on them instead they have the broadcast dates printed in tiny letters on the back cover. Except, for some reason "City of Death". Guess that's the fault of the proof reader.
BillyIsATwat23 1 year ago
@BillyIsATwat23 We get the airdates on the Region 1 versions too. Which I guess is fine to figure out the order, but it's a lot easier just to have the nice, big, obvious numbers.

Great stuff, really interesting to see an American perspective on British sci-fi!
Have you ever seen Blake's 7? I think you'd love it - until it all goes a bit wonky in series 3, it's an incredibly dark, nihilistic sci-fi series, which was one of the influences for Babylon 5 (in terms of having an ongoing story).
Oh, and it's got one of the bleakest finales ever - I saw it at the age of 11, and it scarred me for life!
ste1bro 1 year ago
Loved Blake's 7! I really wish we'd get the DVD sets out here. When I was about 19, one of the local stations was showing it two episodes back to back every week. Definitely a shocker of a finale!
Zaranyzerak 1 year ago
No American release for Blake's 7? Damn.
1980. Great stuff.
ste1bro 1 year ago
Excellent collection and video! If you don't have it already, you should check out the E-Space Trilogy from the Baker era.
I agree that no one does sci-fi and history as well as the Brits. I was in Britain last year, and there is something about the place that fuels the imagination.

Thedoctorsbiggestfan 2 years ago
Being a huge Doctor Who fan myself, I loved the way the TARDIS materialised at the start of the video. I'm also collecting the dvd's in my own weird order best known to myself.
As far as hi-def goes I'm the other way round to you, I have a hi-def 1080p LCD tv which is pretty fine, but I havn't yet upgraded to blu-ray co I really don't know how i feel about having to buy my entire dvd collection again on another format.
But they still look pretty good.
kwisnothere 2 years ago

Whovian69uk 2 years ago
Wondered what you thought about Space: 1999, and UFO. The Invaders is good too, although USA the first couple of seasons are now out.
skrulldave 2 years ago
I haven't actually seen much of Gerry Anderson's stuff, a few eps of Thunderbirds and Captain Scarlett back in the day, and I know I used to watch Space: 1999 when I was a kid, but couldn't tell you anything about it! I remember being blown away by the model work, though. Even as a kid.
I'll go on a binge of all those at some point, maybe once the cartoons calm down a bit.
I'd really like to grab The Invaders - Roy Thinnes is an awesome actor. I think there were only the two seasons, iirc.

Hello um...
I was gonna ask about the DVDs. where abouts are the Regeion 1 DVD's sold? What one has booklets? And are they all the same special features? Thanks =]

Well guess what! I got my first doctor who classic DVD today! Doctor who- The Hand of Fear- And it was great. I put the subtitles on cos every second of speech theres something important! Thanks anyway =]
CalvinEngland 3 years ago
Zaranyzerak 3 years ago
I also got John Pertwee's first story, Sperehead from Space. But the ones I would really like to get are Planet of Evil and most of all, Robot. I also want Terror of the Autons, Terror of the Zygons and Planet of the Spiders to be released on DVD. When Tom Baker left, it really was, for me (Apart from the new series =p), The end of Good Doctor Who. I'm only looking to get Tom Baker and John Pertwee's DVD's.
CalvinEngland 3 years ago
Yep, I know a lot of fans who feel the same way! Myself, I like a lot of the later stories too, but the Jon Pertwee/Tom Baker eras were the ones with the real "magic," as it were. Everything just came together so perfectly in that period, and for that reason it will always be my favorite too. Terror of the Zygons and Terror of the Autons are probably the BIG two I'm waiting for. Especially Zygons - it was one of my earliest stories, and it scared the HELL out of me as a kid! :)
Zaranyzerak 3 years ago
Yes, and also they were most popular too. The Fifth Doctor wasn't too bad, but I can't stand the Sixth and Seventh. It was too 1980's and 'Electric'. Also there were a lot of the complicated space stuff!!

Well, on the empireonline forums people were saying that on a SD tv the picture is black and white. People were confirming it so i just wanted to know if this was true? Obviously not...
Filmfan190 3 years ago
Well, I'm using a PS3 so that might make the difference, since it was intended (in part) to be a "transition" system for people. So you can still play HD games on a SDTV, with the added bonus of it also being able to downconvert BluRay discs to SD. Maybe the B&W issue occurs with standalone BluRay players being hooked up to SDTV's? This is the first I've heard of such an issue, actually.
Zaranyzerak 3 years ago
Your Blu-ray of 2001 is black and white isn't it?
Filmfan190 3 years ago
Umm...no, it's full blazing color. Why on earth would it be black and white?
Zaranyzerak 3 years ago
The English region 2 DVDs look much nicer.
KeyToTime 3 years ago
I strongly disagree (I think they're visually tacky and cluttered), I prefer the clean, uniform look of the spines and the consistency of the logo color on the R1 covers, but hey - beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Plus we both get the same artwork now - just the cover style is different.
Zaranyzerak 3 years ago
They don't look to bad, it's just you get a shuddy build quality with the region 1 DVD boxes, plus you don't get any booklets with region 1 Doctor Who DVDs.
KeyToTime 3 years ago
Now that I completely agree with. The lack of booklets is a huge disappointment...
Zaranyzerak 3 years ago
Canadian DVD's are by far the WORST. I hate the bilingual french packaging so much, that I flat out refuse to buy DVD's at all, aside from the odd $4 bargain bin dumps.
Are the Canadian Blu-rays suffering the same fate?
LondonGuysVids 3 years ago
Yep, looks like BluRay's are getting the same treatment in Canada... :P I wish more manufacturers would just do the reversible covers - All English on one side, all French on the other. Then we can have it however we want on our shelves.
Zaranyzerak 3 years ago
The worst are the ones that have English/French on one side, then French/English on the other. One that comes to mind is Rush Hour 2, my copy at least.
They should take a cue from PS2 and Cube publishers. Release a bilingual slip over top of the case and then re-wrapped again in shrinkwrap.

I do have the terminator movies and the Extreme edition of T2 but the paper one not the tin one as yours
dmolestina 3 years ago
Oooohhhh...so many to choose from! Well, here's a few of my favorites:
Blade Runner (awesome, philosophical, cyberpunk vision of the future)
The Thing (1982 John Carpenter version - scary as hell, claustrophobic sci-fi horror at its best)
I'll assume you have the Alien movies, but if not the first TWO are great. Make sure you get the extended version of the second one!
Outland (underrated Sean Connery flick, basically High Noon in space! GREAT stuff, though the DVD is kinda lacking...)
Zaranyzerak 3 years ago
The Terminator movies (once again, make sure you get the extended version of the second one - it's vastly superior to the theatrical version)
Event Horizon (people seem to be mixed on this one, but I enjoyed it. One of the scariest sci-fi flicks I've ever seen)
Clash of the Titans (legendary stop motion animator Ray Harryhausen's take on Greek Mythology. If you like old school effects, this is one of the best)
Zaranyzerak 3 years ago
That should tide you over nicely for a while. :) Oh, and if you get Blade Runner, get The Final Cut version. Or go for the uber boxed set briefcase edition, which has no less than FIVE versions of the movie and a bajillion extras. :)

Two statements:

Tekka 3 years ago
Really enjoyed this update. I've watched Doctor Who since the first episode and it was pretty pioneering for its' time. The title music and visuals set the tone for the series and one of the things that made the earlier series more exciting for me was that the Doctor had limited control of the TARDIS never knowing where it would take them next. I was 7 when it started and I remember being a bit frightened of William Hartnell and the first appearance of the Daleks captivated me."EXTERMINATE!!!"

The Time Warrior had another first. First time we learn the name of the Doctor's planet.
Do you have Tom Baker's Pyramids of Mars and Robots of death yet? Those are my personal favorite Doctor Whos eva.

WAAAYYYY more extras than the old R1 set, should be well worth the wait.

you should wait to get any more blu-rays before you get a new hd tv. all the special features in the world don't make up for an awesome pictue

Well, when I first got into DVD I starting collecting DVDs a full YEAR before I even had a player. So no, I'll be buying BluRay for all new releases from this point on if it's an option. A short while to be without the picture quality is better than having NO discs to watch when we finally get the TV.

I haven't seen any of the old series or the new series, but I am curious because of this video. I may pick some stories up.
Thanks. Great video.

will there be a Dr. Who movie? or did they already made one
and did u like that they put aliens in indy 4?
and who would win in a fight?
Indy or han solo

No idea if there will be a Doctor Who movie, although there are 4 specials (which are like short movies) next year. Considering they had the POWER OF GOD in tow of the previous Indy movies, if anything I find aliens more plausible - so I don't get why people are in a stink about that. I'd probably say Indy would win against Han, simply because Han seems to win by dumb luck most of the time, Indy seems more "skilled." Against Lara, though, I'd say Lara would win because she's a better fighter.

Or it would be a draw between Lara and Indy, after which they'd go off and have the most amazing sex EVER.

LoL!
but indy has a son-ban and is married!
