  • What makes him a twat?

  • I always loved Paul Merton until I found out he was a total twat, and that saddened me greatly.

  • martin clunes is the product of skipping 5 million years' worth of evolution from the chimpanzee to human being

  • Merton is ridiculously clever as a comedian.

  • He has techniques up his sleeve that he would bring in if the right situation presents itself. They just have to be rehearsed in advance. But you're right, he is very alert as well.

  • swampy, cantona, spice girls and heroin.

    ahhh... the 90s.

  • Merton really was amazingly quick back then. He's still quick now but in the mid 90s it was amazing how quick he could come up with lines that were very funny.

  • Marin Lune.

  • oh wow ! i love the fact that on whos line is it anyway they got both the guys from men behaving badly :)

  • @RoseBeautyDuffy

sorry! i mean have i got news for you

  • paul merton is an absolute cunt, sly little shit.

  • @solidvidic why on earth would you think that?

  • @pcvideogamer he never laughs at anyone elses jokes, he thinks that he's the king of comedy sitting there milking his own shit self righteous jokes, and he practically got angus kicked off the show after viley insulting him for a whole episode, classless cunt.

  • @solidvidic Ahh right, yes i can see he wasn't v-popular about the Angus thing...

  • @solidvidic He's a deadpan comic... that's his persona, he's not supposed to laugh.

And Angus brought it upon himself. His presence was threatening the show; how can you have someone taking the piss out of political scandals every week, when that person himself is guilty of the very thing he's ridiculing. He wouldn't do the decent thing and resign, so Merton and Hislop gave him a push.

  • @alwayswinit4real nah there's having a persona, like Jack Dee, and then there's being a complete snobby twat like Merton. Look at his eyes, you can see his soul and see the horribleness of it. Yes Angus was in the wrong, but don't publically make shit milked jokes about it. Also, Merton needs a trim his hair is gay as fuck

  • @solidvidic I'll have to defer to your sensibilities on that point, as I haven't yet acquired the ability to read people's souls.

But they had to address the situation. If you've ever watched this show for a long time, you'd know that it would just be unthinkable not to refer to what Angus did. It would have been the elephant in the room on every single episode.

Anyway, I don't know Paul Merton, and neither do you, but he doesn't appear to the least bit snobby to me. Angus or Ian, perhaps.

  • @alwayswinit4real i do not merton, he used to do window cleaning down my road, he used to charge a ridiculous amount and sneer down his nose at the contents of your house. Not a pleasant human being, i have to question your sanity and integrity i'm afraid, considering your complete lack of intelligence or awareness of character.

  • @solidvidic You're thirty years old... Merton has been a professional comic for over 25 years... Were you five when you were having your windows cleaned, and noticed his sneering attitude?

  • @alwayswinit4real im not actually 30 years old, i put a random age in when i signed up. I'm 22. But yes he was a window cleaner, he did it as a bit of cash in hand on the side. He's even made jokes about it in the past, albeit about the state of peoples houses comparted to his statley home.

  • @solidvidic Hahahaha... He was on Whose Line Is It Anyway twenty two years ago. Cleaning windows whilst on the payroll at the BBC (WLIIA, Just a minute, Hignfy).... hahaha you're talking shit.

It might have been slightly more believable had Paul Merton not been a Civil Servant up until 1982, before leaving that post to pursue comedy (as it was now financially more profitable than his job in the service).

Stop judging people you don't know.

  • @solidvidic Just proves you've got a shit house.

  • @hand2gland hmm your wit is even worse than merton's...

  • @solidvidic That's because the joke's on you, lay carpet and people will walk on it. The only character who need be aware, is you, stop judging people and complaining when we judge you. Who gives a fuck what you saw, if your story is true, which is probably bollocks, because liars use "back ups" If you paid Paul Merton to clean your windows at a high rate, why the fuck weren't you cleaning them for your mum for free ?

  • @hand2gland lol don't cry because you're not funny. And i was 8 years old you stupid cunt, and didn't live with my mum. Who am i judging? Im not judging, im making an observatiion based on what i've seen. And for the record, i didn't complain about what you said, i just said that you aren't witty.. which you aren't. :) Cheer up

  • @solidvidic lol u stupid cunt, if you were 8 how the fuck did u know of Paul Merton being a snob hahahaha !!! At 8 I had a much more observational life.

  • @hand2gland i didn;t know, i've been told, everyone on the street hates him.

  • @solidvidic So you've gone from saying you could see the "snobbiness" in his soul from the age of 5. And now your saying you dont like him because everyone on your street didnt like him when you were 8 years old?

Call me crazy but your story doesnt seem to add up, do us all a favour and shut your stupid face before you make more of an ass of yourslef -_-

  • @CountJoe1 when did i say i was 5? I've never said that. And yes you could see the snobbiness in his soul, doesn't mean i witnessed it first hand, that's just how the english language works mate. But please don't get yourself involved in this discussion, you're not needed or wanted :) so remove your "stupid face" before you make more of an ass of yourslef -_-

  • @solidvidic I stand corrected, solidvidic made you out to be 5 years old (based off your profile info) when Merton was cleaning your windows, as you would have to be that age to coincide with Mertons 25 year long comedy career. But as you quite rightly stated, you are in fact 22, so by that logic you should not have even been born by the time Merton was cleaning windows. So all your prejudices against Merton are based off your neighbourhoods views on him. Either way your talking bullshit.

  • @CountJoe1 lol.

  • @solidvidic make me -_-

  • @CountJoe1 I thank-you.

  • Thank you for uploading this. I've been searching for it as it's my favourite HIGNFY moment ever, so cheers :-)

  • Martin Clunes looks like hes gong to btuadfwgseshigngwwegw

    i give up...

  • "HAHHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAAAA AHHHAHAHAA" - Martin Clunes.

  • I think he did the second unfunny joke on purpose. I dont think Paul Merton is capable of saying two unfunny things ever.

  • Martin Clunes = William Regal

  • Inspired is the word!!!

  • Hesitation, Paul! ;)

  • I was in Tottenham once about 2001 and i was walking down the road with a friend when this enormous black woman in front of us stopped, dropped her shopping and held out her arms to me saying.. "Martin Cluuuunes... Martin Cluuuuuunes...." when she got a little closer she realized i was just an twerp who looked like him, so there you have my claim to fake fame!

  • @pcvideogamer do you post that on every video with martin clunes in?

  • @ric112 Yes, I've done about 95% of them so far, just a dozen or so and it's done, do it at the weekends mostly, i sent him the story, the court injunction said... "Keep well away from Mr Clunes" I'm not supposed to use the word 'clune' anymore according to the court order, although I'm allowed to wear my fan-made 'clune-suit' in private, it's just plastic-ears and tape to be honest with you, so yeah it can get you into trouble, be warned... CLU HU HU HU HUUUUU nnnnnnnne! ahh that was nice.

  • Good lord....Martin Clunes HAS to be a super villain!

  • @DevNulZor LOL that would be impressive !!

  • very well saved! loved it!

  • I have nothing but respect for PM for what he does and how he does it, nice to see him with a chin back then to :)

  • Neil Morrisey picking coke bogies there at the end.

  • This is an absolute masterclass in comedy. Merton turns two dud jokes into a laugh still worth watching on the internet 15 years later. Every comedian who guests on HIGNFY gazes at Merton in admiration and this is the reason why.

  • @TITISIMO25 Oh, I think it translates just fine! ;D Absolutely LOVE watching Paul Merton's work! :)

  • ahh, i needed that.

  • Paul Merton is brilliant at not laughing at his own humour, he lets everyone else do the work. Very sharp, quick...timing is godlike.

  • i love Paul Merton, hilarious.

  • english comedy doesnt translate well to americans

  • @TITISIMO25 I think the English laugh at their own mistakes & failings more than most nations, just like Paul Merton did when he couldn't think of anything funny about the photo's.

  • @pradon1337 NO THIS IS FRENCH

  • @pradon1337 it's French

  • @pradon1337 You want to go to the north of England you wouldn't have a chance.

  • Man, that was awesome. Made all the better by Martin Clunes' enjoyment of it.

  • BRAVO!

  • Martin Clunes pretty much summed it up :L

  • amaziung

  • hahahaga

  • i watch a lot of comedy and many different comedians, and paul is the quickest i've seen.

  • @UserOfCommonSense I think only Robin Williams is any faster (or more consistently quick on the draw at least, which is what I think we all mean).

  • Mar-Tin Clune Mar-Tin Clune, ying ping ting ling Mar-tin Clune...

  • @GeoMcEvan ooy eeeehaaarhhh hoooaaaarrrgh huuuuurrgh!!!!

  • is the person next to paul neil morrissey?

  • what episode was this?

  • Clunes can't get enough !!!!

  • Easily the quickets comedian there is goinf. Absolutely hysterical. I don't know how he mabages to always keep a straight face, though...

  • @shangrigreige sexist

  • Such a sharp wit. Few comedians like him nowadays.

  • HAHAHA!! i think he gets paid more for not laughing hahaha!! i know i couldn't do it!!

  • I love how Martin Clunes absolutely loses it.

  • @KeyserrrSoze Also, I know that Lee also has a go at Russell Howard in his act at the minute. It got me thinking that his old chum Herring actually worked on Howard's BBC3 show. I haven't seen the routine yet, but I do wonder if something happened behind the scenes there.

  • @kisbie I think, tho I have no proof to back this up, that it stems from a charity gig at the Union Chapel in May of this year, when Russell Howard, the headline act, pulled out with literally 90 minutes to go, leaving the organisers with no choice but to ask the other acts, Lee included, to do longer sets than planned. I was there, and Lee clearly wasn't happy at Howard, and his piece on Howard in his current set, Vegetable Stew, reflects that. It's as funny as fuck, too.

  • @KeyserrrSoze From other interviews, it's also quite interesting to see what Stewart Lee and Al Murray think of each other. Lee seems to think that Murray has sold out to the crowd he's been mocking. Murray once said that he liked Lee but he thought he was a bit 'old-school BBC' - in that he can't bare people making their minds up for themselves.

  • @KeyserrrSoze Highlighting cases of joke-stealing is where I agree it can be fair game, but normally, it is quite difficult to prove that an idea has been nicked rather than just being thought of by two people independently. I remember Dara O'Briain was accused of stealing a joke about Churchill, Hitler and Scissors-Paper-Stone from an obscure club comic (even though he only read it out while hosting HIGNFY), but that was dismissed.

  • @KeyserrrSoze He said it in the Radio Times, in an interview with Frank Skinner before the World Cup. I think he means that Seinfeld's act is basically just light-hearted observations like McIntyre's, but one is lauded as a comedy god while the other is slagged off. He meant it as a compliment to both. He also said that he liked McIntyre partly because it's unfashionable to do so in the professional comedy bubble.

  • @KeyserrrSoze Actually, while we're on the subject, I'm prepared to stick my neck out and say that I agree with David Baddiel when he declared Michael McIntyre to be "the British Jerry Seinfeld". And that Sean Lock is right to say that comedians openly slagging off other comedians - especially when they do it in their act - is just poor form.

  • @KeyserrrSoze Bob Mills also gave the neatest summary of Jim Davidson I've ever heard - "A nasty man who's not a good comedian." At least Manning knew how to tell racist jokes.

  • @KeyserrrSoze I do remember Dave Gorman succintly saying that Manning couldn't really claim to be an 'equal opportunities offender', as the white, heterosexual, working class members of his audience were not made fun of in the same way that the blacks and Asians were. (Having said that, his most famous comment about gay men was more self-deprecatory than it was homophobic.)

  • @KeyserrrSoze The other contribution I remember Manning making on that show was that "women comedians only talk about Tampax, who wants to listen to that?". That was during Joan Rivers' bit (or possibly Jenny Eclair's).

  • @KeyserrrSoze He said it on Channel 4's 100 Greatest Stand Ups. Manning himself was interviewed for that show and gave the immortal phrase, "I've never died in me life!" Two months after the program went out, Manning passed away.

  • Paul Merton = The Comedian's Comedian! The two well respected comedy actors on the panel know where it all begins. With writers like Paul.

  • How times have changes. Now Merton would find it effortless to come up with something unfunny.

  • This really cheered me up :)

  • This honestly has to be, THE funniest thing I've ever seen in my life.

  • genius

  • MARTIN CLUNES laughing makes this better.

  • @greerstorm He's got one of the most infectious laughs I've ever heard!

  • Paul Merton is a genius comedian.

  • Man's a genius.

  • No one could pull themselves out of a hole as quickly as Paul Merton.

One of the sharpest wits we've had!

  • i miss when this show used to be good, even paul merton looks tired these days :(, he needs a better gig.

  • It's Martin Clunes that makes this good.

  • Absolutely amazing! He could improvise his way out of anything.

  • That is how a good professional comedian recovers from two mediocre gags. Top draw stuff, once again, from Paul Merton.

  • @TheTotalRugby why?

  • one of the wittiest men ever. it's him and oscar wilde.

  • god how much better this show woz with angus, i know he was a useless twat but at least they could play off one another then

  • @chrish12345 if the show got another permanent guest I think he could play off them too. it's only because they don't have time to establish things they do in one episode. he played of brian blessed and boria though, didn't he?

  • i love the theme tune for this programme

  • @boomboombadboy good

  • try searching for hignfy the official pirate video. Or pirate special. It's on utube at the moment, it's one of the best episodes ever and this is a classic line from it.

  • i love martin clunes's reaction

  • This was the special pirate edition video if anyones interested, most of the stuff is a bit dated but still funny if you can find a copy in a charity shop or ebay or whatever.

  • @AerospaceEngineer90 Thats exactly what I did. And it 'tis very funny!

  • Paul merton = fuckin genius

  • god i love martin clunes laugh.

  • HIGNFY has never been the same since Angus left!! Nobody can argue the bloke is by far the best presenter on TV today!!

  • does anyone know what episode this is? :D

  • Martin Clunes' laughter is just hilarious! Love it xx

  • what series is this?

  • It was the 'Over to you Angus' that killed me.

  • martin clunes creasing up. LMFAO!!!

  • is it wrong that i find paul murton quite sexy?

  • If you're a wallaby, yes. I'd stick to my own kind, if that's the case.

  • @stripeytop777 I think he is. Which probably means it is a little bit wrong, but hey!

  • what a comback , made one of the worst jokes, and then bam , the funniest

  • good ole nailing angus deyton

  • That was incredibly well played

  • Paul Merton is the funniest comedian on TV, this clip is sooo funny, complemented by Martin Clunes wonderfully "roaring" with laughter.

  • Merton is a god.

  • i chalenge anyone to name a comedian who is quicker witted than merton

  • err... sean lock?

  • sean lock is good but not that good

  • @rancidrancidrancid33

    David Mitchell, but it's close.

  • @thobern

nah, mitchell's forte is the long winded rant.

  • Ryan Stiles, possibly. Two different types of comedian, but Ryan is also very quick on the draw!

  • You have to be on a show like 'Who's line...'

  • paul merton be my flatmate

  • i love this guy!!

he is the best..........BTW if anyone hasnt watched it, look at his "paul merton in china" stuff!!! it is HILARIOUS

  • Fuckin' Legend.

  • I cry laughing EVERY time I watch this...

How does Paul come up with something funnier, on the fly, than most comedians can write into a set.....? Unbelievable, and so funny! :D

  • Merton is fuking hilarious, this is a classic clip

  • Is Clunes catching a fly at 0:35?

  • "I can't think of anything that's not funny"

    - Merton has never said a truer word.

    The man's a comedy genius!

  • @Sandheaver he is clearly the best comedian in UK, undoubtedly in my eyes anyway

  • @huggyb85 fantastic comic w a huge talent for words - check him out on just a minute

  • Angus's little gesture at the end just tops it off :

    'And there it is.'

  • LOVE him!

  • Merton's a fucking legend! :D

  • Good to see Martin Clunes during his Men Behaving Badly days.

  • LOL omg

  • deadpan genius

  • paul is a genius

  • Genius!!!!!!!!

  • What a mighty laugh Martin Clunes has!

  • lmao that was brilliant

  • Majestical.

  • its not a joke, its just funny

  • He makes two bad jokes then says shall i make it three in a row but then he says he can't think of any thing not funny implying every thing he can think of is funny. Then he says over to you angus impling everything angus says isn't funny

  • love the show.. whats Angus doing now?? he was the best host..

  • Coke off hookers, IIRC.

  • Love Martin Clunes every time hes ever been on HIGNFY

  • i remember that comment he made when the chinese premier visited the uk, and the panel were asked where else he had visited. clunes replied 'the globe theatre, because i live opposite it and i videotaped it in case someone shot him'. brilliant

  • "over to you , angus!"

LOL paul was always so harsh to poor angus!

  • Oh man. Such a genius. He plays two complete and utter duds and still comes out on top!

  • I've long dreamed of seeing a show by 'Monty Python Mk. II' (I'm sure they could think of a better name):

    Bill Bailey

    Stephen Fry

    Eddie Izzard

    Hugh Laurie

    Sean Lock

    Paul Merton

Sadly, I had to leave Harry Hill out to limit it to 6 members, but he's welcome to contribute occasionally as the '7th Python, Mk II'.

  • How can you have Fry without Laurie? Ever see their sketch show? Or Blackadder? Or J&W?

Plus, he has the Stan Laurel quality of appearing vulnerable, which the others don't have as performers.

I didn't pick Ross Noble for one as he's from a different generation, and is strictly a solo man.

  • Harry Hill is hilarious

  • @tarff26

2nd that, i love paul merton but harry hill's tv burp is the funniest thing on tv at the moment
