I have a silly question for ya, MJOE, if you don't mind. Do Aussies not say "May twenty-fifth" but "May twenty-five?" You'll have to forgive me. I'm an English teacher and this is actually useful information for me.

I say 'may 25' because it sounds better, flows better and suits my economic approach to communication. why add 'th' to a date when it doesn't actually impart any additional information?

I add it because it's an ordinal number used to show the order of days. In the same way, I wouldn't say I'm 5 in line. :)

However, is this a common practice in Australia though?

hmmm... like I wouldn't say 'this is my 2 comment on this topic'. you make a good point but in answer to your question, no it's not commonplace in Australia - because here, we do dates as day:month:year so we often say '26th of March' instead of 'March 26' - which is how they say it in the US because their date system runs month:day:year (they also rad left to right yet drive on the right side of the road. crazy...)
