If you think about it, a lot of anime characters aren't even Japanese. Take D.Gray-Man for example. Lenalee, Komui, Kanda, and the Asian branch people are the only asians. Everyone else--Allen, Lavi, Miranda etc--are European, so it seems only fitting that non-Asians cosplay as them. But really, it all comes down to you love a character? Cosplay as them!
If you put a lot of effort in your cosplay outfit, people will appreciate it and THAT'S what I call 'good cosplay'.

I reckon asian cosplayers do better with characters who are meant to be asian. Also I read someone once that said Asian cosplayers get the anime/game/manga ones better because they have more childish faces and bodies, while if you have a more mature/sexy character then a westerner will cosplay it better.
That said, asian or western, if you're too overweight to cosplay the character then please don't cosplay them, find a character you're more suited for

I guess they should start putting a legal warning at the start of animes stating that any other race except asians are banned from cosplaying any of the characters shown, failure to comply is death. I say that it shouldnt matter on WHO the cosplayer is or the quality of the cosplay but the amount of fun you have while cosplaying ^^, Personally I LOVE Jenxthejinx and she isnt a japanese cosplayer but she is still awesome at cosplaying.
I envy all the cosplayers. I would love to have my pictures taken just as good as them, but nobody I know where I live doesn't take good pictures or doesn't want to take pictures, so all I can do is make cosplay videos.

I'm western, but I'm very lucky in the fact that my face fits many anime characters. But I don't feel more privileged than say someone who doesn't, because in the end, people do it for fun. Those who are way into the competitiveness, are the ones who ruin cosplay. Whats most important for me is the quality of costume.
as an Asia cosplayer, i must say that i am very proud to be Asian. BUT i also like some of the features that non-asian cosplayers have.( sharp nose, good body shape~).

see the problem about cosplays, is when you see 2 people come in. 1 is a smexxy yuna (FF10) and a fat Squall (FF8), or rather when you see someone we'd dubbed "ugly" as one of those character we would dub as a "cool" character.
I think everyone can cosplay. I'm Italian (LOVE the Italian cosplay!! <3<3<3) and Japanese and I think anyone can cosplay as long as you put your heart into your costume and have fun. That's all you need to make your cosplay look great!
When I see a well put video such as this it does break the barriers of cosplay and say that cosplay itself is for everyone. I can understand some asians when it comes to anime cosplay, but it your just doing it for fun then no one should complain (unless it is intended by the person wearing the costume to be offensive). Also remember if you put 5 minutes into a costume it is not going to be as good as a costume that took 6 months to plan and create. Credit given to all cosplayers.

Any cosplay can look good if you get models to wear expensive superior quality outfits, and then photoshop their pictures. This is usually what I see with asian cosplay when they compare them to ordinary people having fun at an anime convention. Of course the contrast is gonna look bad lol. Anyway, beautiful pictures!

I am an Asian but i would never hate Westerners! Liking on something we have in common is much greater... don't hate fellow otaku who do cos-plays. That is my principle. At least we know that not only Asian people like Anime.

I guess they should start putting a legal warning at the start of animes stating that any other race except asians are banned from cosplaying any of the characters shown, failure to comply is death. I mean seriously what happened to having fun and celebrating something u love no matter what you look like. Some costumes are not the greatest yeah but their spirit and hearts in the right place and thats what matters.

I'm not going to comment one way or another on whether westerners or japanese are better cosplayers. hell, I'm hispanic so until dora the explorer does anime, I'll never be able to do it. but I will make this observation: the better western cosplayers have some features that are more anime-like: lighter skin, shallower eye sockets, smoother jawline. And sadly, more asians have those features than westerners.

ya....sometime some of the non-asian cosplayers really pissed me of cos they dont know how to choose a correct character that suits their body features which makes them look stupid(when you are freaking fat, stop cosplay as a skinny character!) P.S. some Asians also make this mistake...

But you have to consider that some people do cosplay because they really love the character. Even if they are fat they should have the right to cosplay any character.
I'm western, but I'm very lucky in the fact that my face fits many anime characters. But I don't feel more privileged than say someone who doesn't, because in the end, people do it for fun. Those who are way into the competitiveness, are the ones who ruin cosplay. Whats most important for me is the quality of costume.

I love you Morihril! For portraying Western cosplayers in such a good light. I'm Asian by the way. (^_^) And I'm always amazed at how Westerners can pull off certain cosplays than we Asians do.
Anyway, cosplay is for fun! Anyone can pull off a good cosplay as long he or she puts in efforts on their costume, make up and whatever-else-they-need. No cosplayer is superior over the other. It's just the amount of effort that matters.

Cosplay is for FUN (Which is why the word "Play" is in there xD) Anyone can pull off good cosplay with effort and the opposite effect can be said as well (bad cosplay w/ no effort xD) Though my personal experience, FAT like the morbidly obese should not cosplay unless its a fat character. Last time I went to fanime, I saw some super fat OLD GUY dressed up as Sailor Moon. WTF?! lol and I never went back to fanime since xD

I know cosplay is for fun. I get that. But, at the same time it is an eye-sore to see people (regardless of their race) who look nothing like a character cosplaying as that character. That's why cosplayers who put in the effort, time, and money to look like the character get so much praise and respect from fans of cosplay (That Vincent Valentine cosplay looked amazing, right?).
IMO if you don't look like a character don't try and cosplay them, you'll only disappoint the fans of that character.

i think asian cosplay and western cosplay are equal.I mean, i think that the character that they select may sometimes hold more to the asian look like= bigeyed small body, asians tend to be smaller. and there are many characters that suit asians. that's why its easier for asians to find a compatible character to cosplay. that is also why asians have the upper hand.But that is why western ppl are so precious, they are able to pull of mystical creatures like elfs so well. everyone is precious!!=]

When I see a well put video such as this it does break the barriers of cosplay and say that cosplay itself is for everyone. I can understand some asians when it comes to anime cosplay, but it your just doing it for fun then no one should complain (unless it is intended by the person wearing the costume to be offensive). Also remember if you put 5 minutes into a costume it is not going to be as good as a costume that took 6 months to plan and create. Credit given to all cosplayers.

Any cosplay can look good if you get models to wear expensive superior quality outfits, and then photoshop their pictures. This is usually what I see with asian cosplay when they compare them to ordinary people having fun at an anime convention. Of course the contrast is gonna look bad lol. Anyway, beautiful pictures!

There are good and bad cosplayers from everywhere! I do prefer Japanese cosplayers, but I myself have seen just plain bad Japanese cosplayers.
I'm sure we've all seen our fair share of bad cosplayers from around the world.
