it amazes me that the school has the nerve to ban homemade lunches cause they say it unhealthy. but yet their feeding are kids this crap. schools really should start practicing what their preaching.
@chipmnk87 you don't get the point. The point was how to fast food industry decides to use bones and skin and cartilage instead of the regular cuts they could be using.
we need to rethink our priorities. Before trying to make these ultra high-end foods we need to make sure that everyone has enough food to eat, even lower quality stuff because in the end surviving>death. Also I realize that many of the "starving populations" are located far from the sources of the food, but I believe that any carbon footprint is worth saving peoples lives.
@raxgriz3 I agree, we SHOULD rethink our priorities. However, when we're talking about potentially killing people with salmonella and e-coli because fast-food chains want to spend 10% less on making a burger patty, then I'm afraid there's just no room for compromise.
@neferiusnexus What I think that we have to realize that the conditions of food industry is the best it has ever been. It is a sad fact but it is true. Over time the rules and regulations major food companies must abide has grown. If you go back 50 years, the things that industries were selling would be appalling to people today. The difference is that today we have the knowledge about what is being put into our food (think Upton Sinclair) and how it is processed. Ignorance is bliss...
@raxgriz3 "Ignorance is bliss" And the meek shall inherit the earth, so-on and so-forth...
Now if you'll excuse me, I think I'll make myself a dolphin/tuna sandwich and a nice cup of chocolate-milk from milk that's been 'skinned' of all it's protein and nutrients and cocoa that's been carefully blended, roasted and ground by small brown children from the Ivory-Coast. Their orphan tears give it a full rich flavor :P
I agree that this is gross and alternatives need to be found, but would we be reacting the same way if this food was used to feed the homeless or the many who die of starvation each day? We hold ourselves to such high standards while there are people living without any standards. I feel the same way about organic food. People now believe that they deserve the most pure food that they would rather not use insecticides and let a third of their crop die than being able to provide more food...
Love the fact that Jamie is trying to open people's eyes to all these nasty processes! I think we can take it a step further though, ofcourse the labelling should be clearer and EVERYTHING should be on there, but: The whole process of producing pink slime is WRONG! So instead of saying on the label:"yes we use pink slime" it should say:"free of pink slime". Another step further would be to stop eating meat all together, so no animals would have to suffer at the hand of junk-food-addicted humans!
Does anyone actually listen to the video. It says that 15% of the slime is allowed in burgers(Would you rather waste it and throw it away?) and the description says 70% is allowed in. The description also implies that the "pink slime" ALWAYS has e.coli and salmonella. Also, it says that its been treated with ammonia, when it's really treated with Ammonium hydroxide. There's a big difference.
Wow. I start to think about the increasing number of people with different types of cancer, the increasing number of children diagnosed with autism. These things could be related. They are using so many different "poisons" in our food everyday. And they don't want us to know. Shame on them. They just don't care.
Whether you are a vegan or meat eater >> THIS IS GROSS and damn shame they are feeding school kids this. no wonder more & more parents are home schooling & enrolling kids in Charter schools. WAKE-UP PEOPLE !!!!
@japanman316 Who's recomending wasting it? No one in this vid. Jamie is vague about scientific measurments of residual ammonia, but you're downright misleading.
And people bitch about the obesity and unhealthiness in kids. Scumbag businessmen and politicians (it's gay to argue who;s better or worse since they ALL suck) feed your kids whatever they want in the name of profit. What's the difference between the USA and Russia? Different language,THAT'S IT!
@gnomechomskylives Wouldn't know, I don't believe in the 2 party system or should I say one party system with two heads. Both are guilty of this stuff much like any other thing they touch.
@Biosynthnut Sadly there is truth to what you say. That's why party affiliation is not enough to know one's politics. I'm Left of center and I've come to understand that Democrat does not equal Liberal. There are many Conservative Democrats and a few Liberal Republicans. Nevertheless - if you've been following politics - it's hard to deny the vitriol and negativity coming from the GOP ;)
I didnt realize we had gotten so far away from what is natural and what is right... I knew we modified foods to be bigger/resistant/sweeter etc, I knew we added fillers like soy and other plant pastes, I knew we added artificial colors and subsidized the cost with fossil fuels.... but now we are "Cleaning" it likes it the toilet in our bathroom. It feels so unnatural and wrong because it is.
McDonald's says they've stopped using this crap, but an article in Time Magazine says that the USDA is still selling millions of pounds to public schools. Just...WTF? How can this possibly be legal!? So now they're subjecting kids to what is essentially POISON on a daily basis as opposed to on a monthly basis (or however often kids eat at McDonald's).
I. Don't. Get. It. It's absolutely disgusting. I feel like eating a head of lettuce right now to cleanse myself of this information.
The best bit is that it puts the price of meat UP. What was previously low grade cheap (dog food) meat becomes more expensive 'filler', meaning there is less for low grade meat buyers, meaning the price goes up as there is less of it. The corporation wins, the consumer losses, mostly due to the collusion of a government agency with a business it should be regulating on behalf of the consumers..
I wouldn't want to eat this either, but to play devils advocate, the "process" really is not dangerous. Ammonia is in everything organic with a metabolism, and your body makes it naturally and eliminates it easily. It is used to fertilize the ground for all those vegitarians out there. I would feed this meat to my dogs and feel comfortable about it. Better this than letting millions of pounds of meat go to waste if we are going to kill the animals for it anyway.
Why is it after all these decades that it took a foreigner to tell what the USDA should have been all along. The USDA, another gov't agency that was created to benefit the people but has now been controlled by the lobbyist.
Now the US Congress should come up with a "SSUF" ( Stop Selling Unhealthy Food ) law, just like it did to the Internet with "SOPA"....And the world would be a much healthier place.
@vlecka Or you know, the American population could demonstrate its ability to use restraint and eat controlled portions. You're a dipshit if you think congress should decide what is good and isn't good for the population. So much for land of the free if you have your way.
@Dawgmeatt Governments all over the world decide what kind of food should people eat, and it's also illegal to produce and sell food that contains substances which can endanger your health. And just FYI, the USA has never been the land of free, and never will.
Ammonia in other forms (e.g., ammonium sulfate, ammonium alginate) is used in condiments, relishes, soy protein concentrates/isolates, snack foods, jams and jellies, and non-alcoholic beverages..
The Cow gives her Healthy Pure Milk , Cheese, Butter, Gee, etc . A cow can feed many family's.... She is more valuable than Dogs and Cats ! even her skin can be used for leather when she is dead ! Why slaughter / kill / consume?
The meat-based Slaughter / Chemical JUNK food system requires more energy, land, and water resources than the natural diet.
Media Statement “At McDonald’s, the quality and safety of the food we serve our customers is a top priority. At the beginning of 2011, we made a decision to discontinue the use of ammonia-treated beef in our hamburgers. This product has been out of our supply chain since August of last year. This decision was a result of our efforts to align our global standards for how we source beef around the world... to ensure we continue to serve safe, high quality food to our customers.”
THAT'S FUCKING GROSS, So glad I started to juice fruits and veggies, and eating salads instead....fuck this bullshit. I'M TIRED OF BEING UNHEALTHY, so hard now a days to maintain that...
@RoboBagons you should grow your own heirloom seeds garden if you can because 80% of all grown foods are genetically modified and full of pesticides, and most people don't even bat an eye.....
This guy is completely incorrect. His opinions are clearly that, opinions. This is "Inedible". However that is not true. "Exposed to ecoli or where the guts are" I don't recall any living animal that has their intestines or guts on the outside of their body, do you? This jerk off is only trying to illustrate what he clearly wants to market, his personal thoughts and beliefs. Go to hell Jaime Oliver.
@vw1951 Why would the guts needs to be on the outside? E-coli is fund in the intestine of animals and humans, not on their skin. It makes perfect sense that the guts would be exposed to e-coli, as that is their natural habitat.
I agree the process is gross, but to me at least, tastes fine, it's cheap and it's easy to cook.
It may not seem to have much "respect" for food, but when you're on a budget and struggling to pay bills, having the pink slime, as it were, suddenly becomes acceptable.
@IHasChannel no it doesn't. Unless you live in the UK where the "food" is by far the worst in the world and most people over there bark around that classic sickening UK cliché "stop being so fussy"....
@trident3b This pink slime is not even called food in the UK as jamie says we call it shit and UK food worst in the world? lol its funny we seem to have the best chefs in the world and we are teaching you guys how to cook lolol.
@BangalorVanguard teaching who guys? Marco Pierre White etc got their training in continental Europe. And those few Chefs do not cook in the 1000s and 1000s of restaurants around the country... in fact it was that TV programme in the UK where Ramsey goes around to restaurants & tries to get people to cook over there that even demonstrates the desperate need to drastically improve the UK because they know how bad it is. The UK has that reputation worldwide. It's a standard joke.
Rosebud Hog Factory on youtube is a treasure every one should watch. Ammonia is what we used to strip wax off of floors years ago very dangerous stuff.
The people in the audience are ridiculous! I guess none of them remember that as recently as the 17th and 18th centuries, everyone in the population was exposed to the EWW UCH DISGUSTING reality of meat eating by umm... slaughtering their own meat from the farm or the frontier. I'm not an avid hunter, but I imagine the hunters that watched this bit wanted to smack everyone of those "oh my God they're feeding my child WHAT?!" ignoramuses in the audience in the face.
Is not the fda is because corporations like mcdonald's lobby congressman and senators not to regulate them just to make an extra dollar Corporations are only to make profit
Why would you throw that away? Looks pretty good to me.
It's edible, tastes fine, and it doesn't cause harm. Why reject advancements in science that allows us to process food better and use more parts of the cow? Would you rather just waste food?
This is just propaganda from a fear-monger who has no background in the science and safety of this process.
@gillettecrackers The part that has the e-coli in a cow is the cow shit. No kidding. If you want to eat ammonia treated cow shit in your hamburger that is your business, but at least remove the "regulation" that allows this to be labeled as 100% beef.
P.S. It was the same type of advances in manufactured food byproducts that brought us mad cow disease, remember?
@electrostatic1 It was the same type of advances in manufactured food byproducts that let us keep food for longer than a few days and kill harmful bacteria in the manufacturing process, among many other things.
If no one has gotten sick because of it (give me evidence), then what's wrong with not wasting food?
If you're so worried about stuff that potentially touched shit or had e-coli killed off, then you should avoid sausages.
@gillettecrackers It's the fact that they are allowed to mislabel it under federal "regulations" that pisses me off. If you want to eat this shit it's your business.
And sausage casing comes form the small intestine, not the colon.
@gillettecrackers You forgot.... "This message has been a paid advertisement for the consortium of Fat Rich White Men, Monsanto, Tyson, and Syngenta."
This is exactly why I only buy meats of any kind from my local butcher. Not Wal-Mart or any place like it. Last summer I was at a cook out and noticed the burger from Wal-Mart was a funny pinkish color. When cooked the pink juice was bleeding out of the meat while it cooked. I thought it was odd because the grease/ juice from my local butchers burger is pretty clean and clear.
So this tells me that when they have an out break of sickness at some fast food place, it's not that the employees aren't washing their hands. It's already in the meat. There is no way they can kill all the bacteria.
I never eat fast food and I am glad I don't. Everyone else I know who does has had diet related health problems. (Malnutrition, heart disease, diabetes, cancer, etc.)
Make animal flesh as evil as you want, but people will continue to consume it - whether or not chemically or biologically treated - because they are conditioned to believe that it is safe to eat despite all the documented proof that it isn't. Heck, I use to eat this stuff myself until I became a vegan - one of the best decisions I've ever made! I don't miss nor crave it because my taste buds have changed, allowing me to appreciate a more plant-based diet. Go vegan!
HEY FUCKERS GUESS WHAT?! us muslims have our meat hung from hooks , and it doesnt have to be treated with all those nastey chemicals cuz guess what? the way we kill our animals and eat them makes sure that blood is totally edjected ... thats why we have 84% less bacteria related desease from meats than christians and english people in general.
@luisadas It doesn't take much sensationalism to to make it disgusting. Even without the ammonia, knowing that the food industry recycles waste product in meat to stretch profits is sick.
@Nehallyn I'm from Porto - Portugal. We eat animal guts! Is that disgusting? Yes! Will we die from it? NO! This Jamie Oliver guy just wants all the attention to him and his thoughts. Hell with him.
@luisadas Just because your culture tells you it's OK, doesn't mean everyone else in the world finds eating the organs of animals acceptable. In America, most people don't eat organs, and find the practice disgusting. Personally, I find it revolting.
@Nehallyn Wait... What?? Are you serious? Is it OK to kill an animal and eat them but it is not OK to eat the organs because it is disgusting? Am I saying you SHOULD eat organs?!? Am I saying that eating organs is what the whole world should be doing? NOOOO! I'm just saying that something DISGUSTING is NOT necessarily something that is BAD for your health! YOU eat a LOT of stuff that if you KNEW how they where prepared you wouldn't eat it! Jamie Oliver's a dickhead. Period.
@luisadas I never asserted that it was bad for your health. Do try and thoroughly read a comment before replying. As I specifically stated the first time, regardless of whether or not ammonia is unhealthy when used this way, the fact that they use waste meat products in ground beef is disgusting. That was my original comment. It has nothing to do with the health benefits of eating organs. It's simply something most Americans find revolting.
@Nehallyn Ok, sorry. But if "Americans" find revolting disgusting things, DON'T eat Fast Food! Simple! But let ME eat disgusting things! :) BTW, are you speaking in the name of Argentina,Bahamas,Barbados,Belize,Bolivia,Brazil,Canada,Chile,Colombia,Costa Rica,Cuba,DominicanRep,Ecuador,El Salvador,French Guinea,Grenada,Guatemala,Guyana,Haiti,Honduras,Jamaica,Mexico,Nicaragua,Panama,Paraguay,Peru,Surinam,Trinidad Tobago,Uruguay,Venezuela?
@luisadas I don't eat fast food. Not primary because it's made of unmentionable substances which I'm not even sure are meat, but because it's too greasy and makes me sick. My stomach can't stand greasy food for some reason.
If you want to eat organs, that's quite fine with me. Different people grow up liking different things, and you liking parts of the cow I don't doesn't hurt either of us.
And by America, I meant the nation actually named that, the United States.
@Nehallyn Yeah, that's it! We eat whatever we want! And no one has nothing to say about it! If you find it disgusting, don't eat it! But making sensationalism out of raw meat it's just stupid! If Jamie Oliver sliced a good part of the cow, grind the meat and then showed it to the audience, they would also say: "Hey! That's horrible and disgusting!".. Sorry for the preconception here, but this Jamie Oliver guy is what many Citizens of United States of America also like: Sensationalism!
When you heat an ammonia aqueous solution to boiling point it evaporates. It also evaporates naturally. Next time you buy a pack of meat take a strong wiff of it and tell me how much ammonia you smell. Heres a hint: Ammonia smells like cat piss. You think people would be eating the meat they buy at the store if it came out of the pack reeking of cat piss? I wonder what the PPM of ammonia it is in the meat when it reaches the consumer. I doubt its very high if our noses cant detect it
Its not "on the guts side". Most of the "trimmings' include the tail, skin, genitals, etc.
You eat ammonia in your beef so that the company can save 3 cents per pound. Its nothing to do with efficiency. Its pure corporate greed. They saw an oppertunity to take dogfood and put it in your hamburger, and thats what they did. Literally.
@terminsane Ugh! You morons and your "corporate greed" bullshit! Go "occupy" somewhere and hang out with other like-minded simpletons. You think government greed is a better alternative? The government lies and steals more than any corporation and they get away with it because they make the rules.
@justgonnastay Remember, it's government "regulation" that allows meat packers to label this product as "100% Beef" and still be immune to fraud allegations.
Chems can't be good of course, BUT "...this part isn't usable for food, because it's on the guts side", really?
May I kindly remind, that guts themselves are and have been used in food for millenia? As a packaging for sausages.
BRW, unlike those kids I've been in markets (not big shopes called "markets" in US) with my parents where pigs (or half pig, all gutted of caurse) and cows are chopped into smaller pieces by butcher's axe. So their reaction to seeing uncooked meat seems quite weird to me.
The title is grossly misleading. From this video, I learned that up to 15% of any ground beef product can be made up of "pink slime" and 70% of ground beef is extended with "pink slime". Ground beef makes up about 48% of all beef purchases from supermarkets and about 67% from foodservice. So, really, only roughly 5% of America's beef is treated with ammonia.
@justgonnastay i agree they should have specified it's ground beef but once you mix some treated meat in with untreated effectively it all contains some ammonia. the ratio of ammonia to beef may be smaller but what its saying is 70% of the ground beef you buy will contain some ammonia.
Wait, isn't lutefisk made with lye, which is poisonous to humans, too? They just rinse it, too. It's been around Scandinavian countries forever. I'm just sayin'.
Treatment with ammonium hydroxide has been used for decades and deemed safe by FDA and numerous food safety agency's around the world. It is produced in your own body and essential for cell metabolism! Just because it has a scary name doesn't mean you can't use it.
I don't get most of the negativity on this video, really. The major point is not that this stuff is used in food, its that it isnt exactly advertised that it is. You have to note that most of the population is blissfully ignorant, so naturally there is a "Yuk" factor when they see this. Labeling it gives people who care the info ahead of time(cause research sometimes turns up more questions than answers) and those who don't care...carry on. Ex-fast food eater here, btw.
Seriously, I don't plan on engaging in this discussion, but please stop citing biased sources for your statements! Best facts come from these really long and boring scientific studies and research. So stop with the "I watched Food Inc once and...", it's all good to be inspired, but do your own research and make your own opinion.
My favourite part of this video is the end when the mindless people nod and agree to something they know nothing about, just because of a dramatic demonstration. All food is available to the average consumer because of those "clever scientific processes."
Jamie Oliver should return to Britain with his coined "pink slime" and deal with their mad cow disease over there. He leads us to believe that this chemical is a filler, when it's actually a cleaner for beef products, to help prevent e-coli, etc. It has never been proved to make anyone sick (or fat).
@masblancouno I don't think anyone's claiming that it makes you sick or fat. It's just that it's poor quality meat that is intended for dogs and instead fed to humans.
I feel so ignorant, but it's not like we have commercials on tv letting us know all this. But at least I never fed my kids McDonalds when they were growing up. And I myself didn't eat their burgers either. Ew.
Anybody stop to think what'll happen if they pull this stuff from the market? Simply put, the price of meat will skyrocket. Not just burger meat but all meat. We're talking about a massive reduction in the supply of meat if we can't use these "scraps". For all you liberals out there struggling families will have to pay NY strip prices for hamburger and Filet prices for sirloins. Nobody's gotten sick from this so why kill our economy even more.
@bluegryp Im far from a liberal....but we shouldnt be left in the dark on this information. Who says pull it from the market...leave it. Let the ground beef without this stuff be priced higher. Then people can make the choice top pay more or say it doesnt bother them. Choice wont kill the economy.
You all know how most of America treats its animals...they experiment on them, kill them for food, hunt them for sport, or use them for competition, even the dog and cat lovers do that! Well, no human is regarded any better to the usda and the feds than animals are, and thats telling! Are there secret 'human hunting' ranches? We know there are comparison contests and sports that kill and maim contestants. Get with it Dateline, 60 minutes, and TruTV, and find out!
I see nothing wrong with this, assuming the ammonia is thoroughly removed from the meat after it is clean, all this does is reduce waste and reduces the number of cows killed
This video is bias, if you take into account how many mouths there are to feed and the cost associated with them, this "process" actually isnt that bad. The host himself said that he didnt know the exact procedures or ratios of the products and was making data up. Meat is meat, if they clean it and make it safe to eat, then why not..there are tribes and people all over the world who consume the entire animal, including the "scraps" seen in this video. Dont blindly follow, look into it.
@MrSilverG See the funny thing is that even McDonalds, Taco Bell, and Burgerking no longer use this. I say sure its better than throwing it out if you can get it to people who would otherwise be starving. Personally I don't want to be eating this shit
I do not want to SUE or make force people to do anything. If the consumer does not buy a product, the manufacturer will stop making it. Simple as that in a free market. Some people will buy this product even if they know whats in it. It's not the GOV's job to tell people what to eat. It is the responisibility of the people to educate themselves instead of playing the victim.
@Yankeeprepper you're absolutely right, but i think we should also fight for the FDA and all the other food departments of america to STATE THE CHEMICALS in the boxes... Just like when you buy shampoo, it states the chemicals - so WHY would they hide the list of chemicals on our food? When the danger isn't as much on the HAIR as much as it is GOING DOWN OUR STOMACH... Why? Oh yeah, to keep a profit. It's disgusting how this whole world runs off business instead of courtesy & consideration. SICK.
@electrostatic1 well Obama and plenty of other presidents have proven before that "regulations" can be CHANGED. The only reason why it hasn't taken effect is because nobody cares.... As soon as they notice people stop buying ground beef - that's when they start listening. Until then... It's not gonna happen.
I wouldn't be complaining if I had the money to eat more natural foods, but in this country that's almost IMPOSSIBLE. So we have to say "IT'S NOT REAL BEEF" while chucking down juice with arsenic and "artificial flavor". We need a green market. It's hard to find natural shops in my area. I don't complain often, but it's just disgusting. Children are dying from this stuff.
@Yankeeprepper unfortunately large Food conglomerates can afford plenty of lawyers so unless you can get regulations to halt them or get the message out to people this will not stop.
Cooking neutralizes biological contaminants, such as bacteria. Chemical compounds such as ammonia are much more likely to survive the heating process. It all depends on the properties of the chemical.
I would say its better a person uses close to 100% of a resource then using only 60% of it. Its like cutting down a tree only to make a single box of toothpicks and leaving the rest for waste.
not defending this trust me....but this should be at best titled that 70% of GROUND beef in america HAS AT MOST 15% filler meat treated with ammonia. so it's biased, but i prefer this bias than "it's all good". good for jamie to be trying.

@japanman316 ure big difference in form –ammonia is a gas. Ammonium hydroxide is a liquid. ie. Ammonia in water, so effectively no difference.
A volume of ground beef is allowed to contain up to 15% “pink slime”. 70% of ground beef product in US contains pink slime. No contradiction.
But you're correct, at least one person isn't listening to the vid.

So now they're subjecting kids to what is essentially POISON on a daily basis as opposed to on a monthly basis (or however often kids eat at McDonald's).

P.S. It was the same type of advances in manufactured food byproducts that brought us mad cow disease, remember?
electrostatic1 3 weeks ago
@electrostatic1 It was the same type of advances in manufactured food byproducts that let us keep food for longer than a few days and kill harmful bacteria in the manufacturing process, among many other things.

If you're so worried about stuff that potentially touched shit or had e-coli killed off, then you should avoid sausages.

@Nehallyn Wait... What?? Are you serious? Is it OK to kill an animal and eat them but it is not OK to eat the organs because it is disgusting? Am I saying you SHOULD eat organs?!? @luisadas I never asserted that it was bad for your health. Do try and thoroughly read a comment before replying. That was my original comment. It has nothing to do with the health benefits of eating organs. It's simply something most Americans find revolting.

So, really, only roughly 5% of America's beef is treated with ammonia.
justgonnastay 3 weeks ago
@justgonnastay i agree they should have specified it's ground beef but once you mix some treated meat in with untreated effectively it all contains some ammonia. the ratio of ammonia to beef may be smaller but what its saying is 70% of the ground beef you buy will contain some ammonia.
