The screenshot you used is interesting. Isn't this during the Chopin Ballade when VH suddenly stares down the audience? I wonder whether something caught his attention. Maybe it was just a reflex.
Haha I was wondering the same. I think he was glancing towards the camera - Horowitz had reservations about people being able to see his hands while he played his Carmen Variations. It would make transcribing it easier, which was the last thing he wanted.
the very one. i think it likely he was looking at the cameraman - i think it likely a lot of that concert as broadcast was from the rehearsal. the "carmen" certainly was.
