  • I've always been sceptical about the argument that the Americans killed it. There was something very weird about the way it was scrapped - everything destroyed in such a way that it could never be resurrected? All that development wasted at exactly the point that they started flying & could have at least got back some knowledge from flight testing.

The US had a big interest in selling F-111s - but surely would have preferred to acquire the technology, not see it destroyed? There's more to it.

  • The tsr2 was shut down by our labour comminist government. It could have delivered nukes low level and unseen. The ruskies were shitin themselves.I think the main reason though was it made the yanks jealous.I think their hand around our finacial balls tipped it!

  • @xfire7 Well since the Miles-52 Supersonic Test Aircraft (Bell X1 Rival) & the Saunders Roe SR177 (Interceptor) were killed

off in pretty much the same way & without a adiquate reason it is indeed a interesting coincidence that the Yankee's corperate Interests conflicted with ours (although not much of a surprise it has to be said).

  • An amazing achievement for its time. It just looks so right!! What on earth were the government thinking of to cancel an engineering masterpiece? they clearly had no foresight of the potential that TSR2 had as a major deterent.

It would be great to see XR220 fly. I'll start the kitty off at £100

  • @blownflapsXR219 It Goes without saying that Labourites (Old ,New or otherwise)

Are INCAPABLE of Thinking (at least not on any level that is remotly Definable as Inteligent or even Human)

I'm Happy to say it's not a Question of if XR220 will Fly... But When! (Because i will do Everything in my Power to see this Rightful Mistress of the Sky's Given the Chance to show the Entire World (the Yankee's in perticular) Just how Unequaled this Swan Song of the British AeroSpace Industry Truly Is.

  • @blownflapsXR219 Unfortunately, whilst it is beyond doubt that the TSR2 had AWESOME potential as a strike aircraft, the issue boiled down to whether the UK could actually justify the TSR2. It was conceived as a STRATEGIC aircraft when we still possessed interests/commitments in the Middle East. By 1965, Britain had drawn her horns in & relinquished her interests in the ME. We could not really justify TSR2 purely in a NATO only role, which would be largely TACTICAL. A huge tragedy nonetheless :(

  • lol@the video

how could have air defence missiles in the fifties and sixties shoot down a plane flying at mach 1.2 at 200 feet?

  • what do we have now - the eurofighter ?? out of date before launch -tornado ancient but scores high in its class. Thats it

  • All part of the US making sure UK was a controllable power

  • Thats just up the road from me. Such a shame it was cancelled

  • Hey, the US never like Harold Wilson, who was suspected of being too much of a Soviet stooge.

  • Government should have been shot for treason.

how much did we pay for the F1-11 wich we did not get?

  • Guess I will have to go B & W on my next one.

    Nice historical piece
