This guy has guitar DNA built in his soul. For those of you who are familiar with Don McLeans original version of this amazing song with the actaul lyrics I find Chet's ability to pluck the notes as if he was singing the song just freakin amazing. Maybe that's not the best way to phrase it but some of you might understand. This guy plays the guitar like nobody else.
NO WAY, YOU HAVEN'T HEARD OF CAT CLEMONS!? Come redeem your shame by checking out my videos and commenting and subscribing! It'll be awesome. Trust me.
I don't believe it's wrong. Inspiration comes in many forms, some of them not being recognizable to you, but to others. Anything that spreads happiness, Chet Akins and Rihanna, should be supported.
@FancyFeast3 I agree with you that happiness should be spread, however the point of my comment was to put into perspective the music this generation listens to. Not knocking Rihanna, but it is songs like Vincent that I believe to be true art, and not meaningless club bangers with zero heart or soul - just getting drunk in a club as most of them promote. Rihanna is really talented, but it would be nice to hear a song like this on the radio every now and then.
Even more wonderful than the music is the fact you can see the emotion he puts into it just by looking at his face. A true guitarist, he doesn't simply play the music he FEELS it.
Of all the things I've heard Chet play in all my years, I think this is THE most beautiful I've heard. Rolling Stone magazine be damned, THIS is a guitar MASTER.
What yuppie dork made the TV show top five guitar players and never mentioned the master, Jimmy Hendriks was rated first, fine, take away the elctronics and what do you have? This man is truly the master
Oh my giddy aunt - I first 'discovered' Chet Atkins when Harry Chapin doffed his cap to him: here he, the guitar master, beautifully doffs his cap to Don McLean.
There is a special on PBS channels called "Chet Atkins, Certified Guitar Player". It is Awesome!!! I don't know if there was an OFFER to buy that one from PBS, you know like they do sometimes, but if there was, I missed it. Shit! I keep looking for it to pop up again on my 2 local PBS stations so I CAN buy it!
NO ONE WILL EVER MATCH THIS REAL GENIUS, LET ALONE SURPASS HIM. I MET HIM IN A RARE (IF NOT THE ONLY) VISIT TO THE UK IN THE EARLY NINETIES, AND HE SIGNED 2 CD'S FOR ME. I COULDN'T UNDERSTAND HIS SOUTHERN DRAWL, OR HE MY WEST OF ENGLAND ONE. BUT WE SMILED INSTEAD. I LATER ATTENDED HIS OPEN AIR SHOW IN BRISTOL, AND IT WAS UNFORGETABLE.
@jferone Sorry I got your back up, there! My comment didn't come out at all the way I intended. (Opposite of "I'd like to have those minutes back"). Been a Chet fan since the early 60's and have always admired the person as well as the musician. The comment regarding his influence on other guitarists was meant as a compliment, too.
3 minutes and 44 seconds of my life I'll never get back - and don't want to. Saw a comment somewhere on the 'Net...."everyone who has picked up a guitar in the past 50 years has been influenced by Chet Atkins" Enough said.
If you look at his face at around the two minute mark he's saying "I don't give a fuck what you, or anyone else thinks, I'm enjoying the fuck out of what I'm doing here"
I love this song, don't get me wrong, but one tiny complaint is that his strings are too twangy, I think it would sound better if he picked more softly or used a classical guitar
@oddhominem He recorded it on nylon guitar /classical guitar. It's up here on youtube from performances in 1975 and 1994. Check it out! I prefer this version with the steel strings.
the coolest thing about this arrangement is how it completely captures the emotion of the piece without the lyrics. Play a song this emotional without the lyrics and you've got a pretty bland sounding song. But even without the lyrics, Chet still painted the perfect picture.
@PresidentZod yuk yuk, yes, sorry, I'm refering of course to the Lyrics Don McLean wrote. It would have been perfect for her, a song about a French artist, and the way it's sung.
There's a good reason why we pronounce his name incorrectly on both sides of the pond (Van Goff in the UK/ Van Go in the States); the correct pronunciation is Fun Cock.
@oddhominem ok, you got me there, it was a bit of a giveaway with the VAN prefix, ergo, I knew that, if you want to be technical, you are entirely correct but for that matter Chopin was Polish. Both called France their home and both were of the French school although please correct me if I'm wrong. Impressionism is hardly ilk to the Van Dyke style Dutch master work.
I'm thinking of Chets connection with Lenny Breau, who was like a wayward son to him, and Lennys' life and untimely death which identifies strongly with Vincents story as a troubled artist, and how maybe this is on Chets' mind as he plays it. Just a thought.... Lenny died in '84, I don't know when this aired.
I stopped watching music award shows years ago...once I realized that those who decide who gets Grammys...CMA's...People's Choice awards, Academy awards...are only familiar with "yellers" and "noisicians"...and wouldn't know a "singer" or a "musician" if they heard one. I couldn't agree more, it really is a shame that passing fads are given so much credit while true timeless beauty and talent often go ignored in the music industry. But on the bright side, we can always turn away from such things and focus on what is beautiful and amazing to our own ears, not theirs :D
@tunesmith09 ,,yes its true im finding the music industry relies on appearance marketing and profiteering ,,sad so much un detected talent and way to much grunge noise falsetto bling bling ..just my opinion ...

@Hendrixking14 i was disrespected going through that list and not seeing greats like him in their, george lynch, and also seeing eddie van halen at such a high ranking. their all about popularity in other peoples eyes
@Hendrixking14 They also put "Like a Rolling Stone" as the number song of all time on there list of top 100 songs ever! Nothing wrong with that song just don't agree with the choice.
like a ROLLING STONE seems a little to convenient and bias to be the best song ever lol
So I would take everything they print with a grain of salt
@Hendrixking14 I agree that has to be the worst 100 guitarists of all time list I've ever seen in my life. Who ever made that list had no idea what he/she was doing. I'm not trying to disrespect any of the guitarists on that list, but there are definitely some who needed to be higher on that list, and definitely some that needed to be lower. Heck the majority of them should be replaced by some more deserving. I didn't even see Segovia, Djanjo, Satriani, Vai, Slash, Chet, etc.
@Hendrixking14 I think Rolling Stone is like The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, they do everything solely for the money. I can understand wanting money, I mean, c'mon, but they missed a lot of great guitarists.
@Hendrixking14 ... Oh yea , you got that right regarding Rolling Stone's top 100 guitarists... I lost respect for the magazine after that article, havent bought one since!
@Hendrixking14 Just read your comment. While I agree it, s B/S, lets just understand why Rolling Stone didn t mention Mr Atkins in the top 100. R/S is a liberal up beat rocker paper. While they list a distortion artist such as Jimmie Hendrix as one of the best, (Please LMAO) they don t mention the inventor of the straight pickin, while playing rhythm master. Why? Then they would have to recognize us country bumpkins. Ask them what brand of music has generated the most money. Opps no answer.
@Hendrixking14 Well I think that the idea to classify guitarists is a bullshit... There are no best guitar players, they don't have any arguments to put John Frtusciante before Tom Morello (for example)
@Hendrixking14 completely agree.. Tommy Emmanuel wasn't in there either. Those two should be towards the top of the list regardless of genre.. John Williams, Andre Sagovia, weren't in there either.. and what about Jose Faliciano?..... Their list is just plain wrong.
@Hendrixking14 There are too many great guitar player to be put into that half-bullshit list of the best 100! Chet would without a doubt take #1 on the country players list, Joe Pass at #1 on the jazz players, Segovia #1 for classical...... the top 100 list is for the guitarists with their guitars below their knees and their pants below their ass!
One of the best guitarists that ever lived....He and Les Paul are unchallentged and will always be that way. Unbelievable presentation......here for the ages....thanks for posting this performance !!!!!!!!!!!!
Chet Atkins is one of the best guitarrist ever to live but can't understand the line sound out of his guitar that he went to on lots of late live performances. It just sound bad to my personal taste.
This is incredible. Thank you for sharing. I am trying to learn to play this song from Mel Bay book on CA. The sheet music version has a very lackluster understated ending. Here, Atkins gives the piece an nice flourish at the end. Thanks again for sharing.
Chet, the grandfather of solo fingerstyle... what an amazing guy. Can't help but be facinated by his playing. Timeless beauty! I think Tommy Emmanuel and Adam Rafferty must be related to Chet. They have similar styles and incredible technique. They make Grampa proud........................................
This guy has guitar DNA built in his soul. For those of you who are familiar with Don McLeans original version of this amazing song with the actaul lyrics I find Chet's ability to pluck the notes as if he was singing the song just freakin amazing.

@WayOutWesley Andres Segovia is FIRST...No argument here. He can play ANY piece of music masterfully WITH ONLY ONE HAND...

@Hendrixking14 Even worse because his nickname is, in fact, "Mr. Guitar".

@Hendrixking14 Don't bother looking for a perfect cut diamond in a pawnshop. This two decades old VDO still get 1.5 million viewers, said it all.
No doubt, Chet Atkins is a LEGEND, with or without any BS magazine approval.

Que hermosa melodia, me relaja y me hace sentir tan bien, que aunque a veces me entristece, me hace sentir vivo y eso ya es bastante
