  • Hey,

Great job! You were amazing! Do you have the name/artist for this track for me to be able to buy it? I'm want to do this dance! Thanks so much.

  • @devikapatel94: Hi there! I am told that a similar version of this track can be found on Dhananjayans' Bharatha Kalanjali CD. You should be able to order it online. Good luck! And thanks! :)

  • u r an APSARA!!!!

  • @shwetpari: Ha ha! I love that! You're too sweet - thank you!!

  • Hello,

You are doing a great job ! can you please send me this track ??

  • @131shenoy: Thanks very much! I would prefer not to forward the music file, though, out of respect for the artists who recorded it; thanks for your understanding.

  • mind blowing performance. it is not possible for a foreigner to perform Indian classical dance in this elan without a previous birth connection with India and its classical dance. hats off!!!

  • @sirasri: Wow - what a kind thing to say! Thank you!! (And I totally agree: in another lifetime, there was more than just the costume...!) :)

  • @JaiKhalsa : You were really gracious to take it in a nice way but, I dont agree with the previous commenter. Art and dance and music doesnot belong to a certain nationality - it is for everyone. IMO, all it requires is devotion and concentration. I grew up in India an now I live in the usa and I am trying to pick up Cello. My being Indian doesnt necessarily mean I cant excel at something western and vice versa as you stand testimony. In the end we are all humans, following our passions.

  • @coolelectromagnet: Agreed, agreed and agreed! Beautifully stated. Thank you - and enjoy the cello!!! :)

  • Really Fantastic!!!

  • @mccanejw: Thank you!

  • Very nice. Felt overwhelmed by your interest in Indian dance. You are at par with any Indian dancer.

On the acting part I observed some misalignment between the meaning and gesture:

mooshika vahana - modaka hasta - chamara karna - vilambita sutra

In the above phrases it is the phrase "chamara karna" that means the big ears of an elephant. But you start showing that gesture much earlier and end up showing something else by the time this phrase really starts. Otherwise well done :)

  • @ksmanjunatha: Hi there! Thanks so much for your support and for your feedback. I made a few mistakes during this performance, so I was indeed misaligned in some areas. Always room for improvement. :) Cheers!

  • superb performance. i am a fan of you.bieng a foriegner your performance is excellent. my self and my daughter 7years old are daily watching your dance for her dance program. and she also is very impressed on your dance. ..........bindu

  • @bindu847: Thank you - I'm so grateful for your kind words! Please give my best to your daughter. Many blessings to you both!

  • great dancing jai. I am glad that you were able to capture such a big audience and still keep all of the cultural aspects of bharatnatyam authentic as possible. great job keep dancing. I have to say you are the first non indian i know who is still able to keep the authenticity of the dance and who didnt mess up the moves because that is what;s important.

  • @Shahrazad7: Thank you SO much for this immense compliment. What a generous thing to say! I'm very grateful. Bless you.

  • @JaiKhalsa your welcome

  • Hi,

That's a good performance. I really need this track as soon as osible but I can't find a website to buy it. I was wondering if any of you could send me a link to a page where I can download it or send me the file itself.

    I really appreciate your help

    Thank you

  • @DanGorbea89: Hi there! I am told that this track can be found on Dhananjayans' Bharatha Kalanjali CD. You should be able to order it online. Good luck! And thanks! :)

  • very good

  • @TheThines619: Thanks! :)

  • hi ...............! jai. i have no words .......but one thing i can say that the fellow indians are becoming more inclined to western culture leaving behind their great and unique culture. I am very much impressed for your interest in indian classical dance.i wish you the very best.

  • @shiva87994: You are so kind - thank you! I am humbled by your words... and I lived in India all through the 90s, when this major shift was taking place, so I definitely understand your frustration. It is my prayer that everyone in India will always honor their amazing culture. It's so magnificent. And I will always honor it! :)

  • wow! u r amazing!!

i started learning this piece today and now i love it!!!

u dance with soooo much perfection!!!

    keep it up!!!

and you come froma different culture!!!

    well done

    and best wishes

  • @Umacutie: You're so sweet, thank you. Enjoy learning it! :)

  • welcome JaiKhalsa

  • @kalai45 :)

  • She is a Goddess ... :)

  • @tamilvengai: You're so kind - thank you!

  • @JaiKhalsa Is that you who danced in this video ??? :D

  • @tamilvengai: Yes, that's me!

  • @JaiKhalsa OMG.... :D ...U are an amazing dancer :) I started sharing this video with all my family members the moment I saw this video.... :D My Mom actually thinks that u are an absolute angel... :D Oh Yeah... I agree with her ... :D

  • @tamilvengai: Too kind. Thank you! All the best to you and your mom. :)

  • this song is from the bharathakalanjali cd by the dhananjyans...u can get it online purchase

  • @kalai45: Thanks for posting that. People will appreciate knowing where they can get the music. Much appreciated.

  • Hi, A lot of traditional Indian performers would not be open to perform like you on a street. In spite of being such an accomplished dancer as it is apparent, you seem to be quite humble. :-) You are doing a great service to Indian classical dance. Thank You and All the very best.

  • @pcermomb: I can't tell you how much I appreciate your kind and generous words of support! Actually, I guess I can: VERY much!! :) Thank you. Blessings to you.

  • Very nice performance...Thank you for spreading the classical message :) I wish u all the best!

  • @chinni032: And I wish the same to you! Thank you!

  • Jai Your dedication is admirable... You are a very graceful dancer. I spent my entire Saturday evening with you, watching your tubes over and over...and could not get enough. Please keep them coming. Many eons ago, I was a Bharatnatyam student myself ... now living in the US, I rarely get to watch Live performances & I miss that. Thanks to YT and wonderful artists like you, who share their work with the world. Good Luck Jai & God Bless!

  • @qiron: I know I've already responded to some sweet comments from you on a few of my other videos, but this one is exceptionally lovely, so I wanted to make sure I thanked you for it! I promise to post more videos soon - as soon as they're ready! And I hope some Bharatnatyam performers pass through your area soon, so you can enjoy them LIVE! :)

  • @JaiKhalsa Someday I will come to New York and be your audience.... I hope thats where you perform.... :)

  • @qiron: Mostly Los Angeles. But New York is also a great place to see great dance!

  • @JaiKhalsa OK Thanks Jai... Los Angeles it will be. Will surely come and be your audience. Good Luck and Keep performing and smiling :)

  • @qiron :)

  • this was very well done for a minor,

i have taken classes for 12 years now and that one move that you said was a trunk was actually the string he wears across his body.... and his ears arent that big thats an insult as well. but very well effort, also you should be wearing some type of clothing across your chest area from the left shoulder, grown woman are suppose to.

  • @Dillss4: Indeed, I did make several mistakes in this live performance, but there was no way to edit them out of the video. Thanks for your corrections. As for the costume, it was tailored for me in India per my Guru's instructions. And I love it! But I appreciate your feedback - thanks!

  • Simply Divine.....

    Excellent.

  • @vjseelan: Thank you!! Blessings!

  • i never ever saw such a awesome performance in my life!!!!you seriously live the moves....beautiful!!!!good luck jai!!!

  • @thiru219: This reply is VERY belated, but it's also VERY grateful: Thank you so much!!!

  • This is an insult to indian dance .... off beat, zero footwork

  • @roonymax: Thank you for your opinion. All the best to you.

  • Wow u seem to have really mastered classical south indian dance! Where are u performing these days ?

And why are you performing on the streets ? These are some of the dances which defines indian culture! ( Dont ya think so ? )

  • @EnchantedMusicLover: Hi there! A long overdue reply - my apologies... These days most of my performances are in Southern California, specifically Los Angeles. And my main reason for choosing to perform on the street - specifically, on the Promenade in Santa Monica - was exactly what you said: These are some of the dances which define Indian culture! It seemed to me a great way to share Indian culture with people who might not otherwise be exposed to it. :)

  • @JaiKhalsa Welcome Back and thanks!! and you are doing an awesome work too.... !!! i would really recommend you to perform outside US too... So glad that you people are helping our culture reach other nations !! thanks and my best wishes!!

  • @EnchantedMusicLover: I will certainly be performing outside the US in the future - hopefully soon! Will keep everyone posted. Thank you again for your well-wishes!!

  • You did a great job with the steps! I was wondering, might I also have a copy of the song for an upcoming performance? It would be much appreciated! Thanks for spreading our culture so well!

  • @chardine20: Thank you so much for your kind words - and my sincere apologies for taking so long to reply to your music request. I am sure your performance passed a long time ago, but do you still need a copy of this version of the song? If so, I can tell you how to get it. It's from the Bharathakalanjali cd by the Dhananjayans. You should be able to find it online... good luck!

  • it is a delight to watch this performance. a true combination of East blending with West. where do you perform wish i could see it. Thanks.

  • @suryamano: Hi there! Thanks for your comment, and for your support! To answer your question, most of my performances are in Los Angeles, California. I do sometimes tour, and will be sure to keep everyone posted. Whereabouts do you reside?

  • @JaiKhalsa : I live in san jose. if you happen to be in SF or nearby places, i would love to see your performance.

    Thanks

  • @suryamano: I'll keep that in mind, and will be sure to let you know. Cheers!

  • Fantastic. Delightful. Congratulations!

  • @subramanianvb: Thank you! Thank you! And thank you! :)

  • That was just marvelous......I see that this was done in early 2009....do you have anything more recent....Would love to see some more of your work...

  • @raghav9in03: Thank you so much! I do have some newer videos, but we're having a few "technical difficulties"... I hope to post them soon. :)

  • Awesome performance. I kept watching all of your videos. You must perform in a bigger auditorium and also in India ( if possible). Hope you reach great heights.

  • @getstrengthful: Thank you! Your words are so kind! May they go from your lips to Divine ears. :)

  • You look like Julia Roberts and I think you talk like her as well. Very mature and modest!

  • @RainbowPalette: That's a very kind compliment - thank you!

  • I signed in to like ur vid .. ausome stuff .. way to go ..

  • @ronorocks: Thanks!! I always appreciate an extra thumbs up. ;)

  • Excellent :) .... your expressions in the dance are too good!....really appreciate your dedication and effort...All The Best!

  • @dinesh2002: Unfortunately, I don't know the name of this track. It was given to me a long time ago as a single item on a CD, which had in turn been transferred from an audio cassette of a live recording... so there's nothing I could suggest to help you track it down on iTunes. My apologies!

  • @19rajprem: Rag Nattai, Talam Adi. I hope that helps. Thanks for your patience!

  • wow great performance Jai. You're doing better than many others out there.

  • Thank you so much for your support! Blessings!!

  • this is a vahana not a pushpanjali. pls get your information right.

  • Thank you!

  • *All* Pushpanjalis are not about Ganesha, but this one is. :-)

  • Thanks for further clarification. :)

  • This is not a Pushpanjali - it's a Ganapati Stuthi or invocatory item.

  • Thank you for the information.

  • @JaiKhalsa

hes rite...it is a ganapati stuthi..its called mooshika vahana

but alsoo.... all pushpanjalis are about ganesh soo i can understnad the confusion =]

but apart frum that...goood jobb! im also a classical dancer =]

  • Thank you! :)

  • Thank you for sharing your lovely rendition of these most wonderful pieces. There aren't enough of us out there trying to keep the tradition alive. I can see that you are among the few who really holds true to your guru's teachings. More power to you!

  • It is absolutely my pleasure and honor to be following in this tradition, and I have the utmost respect for my teachers and for all those who have come before me. Thank you for such lovely words! Much appreciated!

  • hi.. this s ma 1st comment in youtube..thanks 4 spreadin our culture..its a nice nice perpormance...i thank u on be half of every tamil people..really great .. good luck

    take care..

  • Thanks very much!!

  • From one bharathanatyam dancer to another; thank you for spreading the art. I wouldn't have thought of this first but after thinking about it, i commend you for having the courage. Not to mention you did a superb job. Your asthas are clean and graceful and I love your costume!

For all those who balked at a foreigner performing an ancient Indian dance on the street, remember how much wester hip/hop dance is mutilated on the stages of Indian cinema. So don't be hipocritical.

  • You're very kind, and I thank you for your generous words and for your support. Good luck to you in your performances as well!

  • i have no words to tell how thrilled i'm...but i'll say 'keep up the good work!'...btw...where did you dance? (tell me the city that would suffice.. :) )

  • I studied first in Bangalore, and then with a Kalakshetra teacher here in the U.S.

This particular performance was done in Los Angeles; specifically, in Santa Monica, on the 3rd Street Promenade.

Thanks again for such lovely sentiments!

  • Hello!

I just want to say that I am really impressed by your performances, and so happy to see them. I am a classical vocalist (carnatic) and it is one of my passions. I don't dance, but I love watching it and singing the songs. God Bless you for preserving our art and Indian heritage!

  • Thank you so much! Blessings to you as well!

  • Hi Jai,

Surprised to to watch ur street Bharanatyam dance. Really Great!

I appreciate ur talent in our classical dance .

  • Thank you!

  • Keep up what your doing. Many ancient dances have died out, and it is amazing to see that you are bringing a heavenly dance from OLD world in to the New World. Bharanatyum dancers bring people closer to God.

  • I certainly agree with you on that - it's a spiritual experience! ;)

    Thank you for your support!

  • i sang this song and on the u tube. could you please seea nd mek your (jai kalsa)ccomment please.

  • Hi there, I love to see that you hear the rythm, which is generally rare in Bharatanatyam non Desi dancers:) Which style do you perform and who's your guru?

    Best regards and good luck!

  • I studied first under C. Radha Krishna in Bangalore, and then worked on the Kalakshetra style with Christel Stevens in the U.S.

Thank you for your kind compliment and for the well wishes! ;)

  • i have been looking everywhere for your alarippu and pushpanjali tracks and you have them. i am sooo happy to hear them. i wish i knew where i could find them.

  • Hi there! Another user just replied to someone else's question about the pushpanjali music:

"the song is "pushpanjali" sung by v.p. dhananjayan, available on the cd "bharata kalanjali" "

    Hope that helps!

  • You should seriously go to Boulder, CO. Besides the mountains, and it being a college town of diverse cultures, there are street performers very regularly (usually magicians/stunt performers, and musicians). The main pedestrian-only shopping strip on Pearl street has 5 or 6 Buddhist/Nepali/Hindi shops itself. But, the area also has ISKCON and Naropa University (Buddhist-Inspired Contemplative Education). You would get lotsa love in Boulder.

  • I've never been to CO, but I actually might be there this November. I'll have to look up Pearl Street just incase I'm able to come to Boulder.....

  • Excellent choice of music, by the way. I keep coming back to this video so I can jam to it with my ghatam. Do you have the names of the author and title of the song?

  • I actually don't have the lyricist/composer's names. I've tried hunting them down, but with no luck. Would you like me to e-mail you a copy of the track? It's pretty beaten up (lots of static; must have been copied and re-copied a billion times before it reached me), but it's still great.

  • the song is "pushpanjali" sung by v.p. dhananjayan, available on the cd "bharata kalanjali"

  • Thank you so much! SO many people have been asking for this; it's great to now know how to answer them. ;)

  • And I still want to have your babies.

    Ha!

I do love the footwork that accentuates the beats on the mridangam/pakhawaj. But also, wonderful it is when the footwork plays its own accentuations, punctuating its own & different parts of the rhythm -- acting as its own purely independent instrument.

    Beautiful work!

  • Still amused......

And still grateful for your kind words!

    ;)

  • It's interesting; the body language of the spectators. Those spectators (woman @ right) that seem like they dressed up to accentuate themselves have the worst body language: crossed arms, incredulous facial expressions, an air of arrogance. Those in casual clothes seem to be in more direct appreciation. I for one can't seem to watch you dance without the utmost adoration.

  • ur so brave,, i would never be able to dance in a crowd like that but u did it so good,,keep up the good work, i like u r expressions and moves so gracefull

  • Of course you could! It just takes a little encouragement, which I'm sure your family and friends would be happy to provide.

  • hi Jai..

thanks for the Pushpanjili dance.. so nice.

where i can get this song? 10 years back i used to dance for this song in temple.

    thanks dear

  • I must admit that i watch this video very often, lol... :D

I just cant get enough of this. Seriously, its like being blessed by Lord Ganesh Himself. Ur movements about Him is just so divine with ur smile. Seriously, i just felt so close to Him by watching this. Got the goosebumps!! :D

  • You're too kind! Thank you!

  • Hi Jai,

You were good and do take care when you interprete the song.........for MOOSHIGA VAAGANA MODHAKA HASTA you were doing his elephant like ears, which is a mistake.........i admire your dance.......you have a good sense of rythmnin your body for the music....improve more and you'll be a good dancer

  • Thank you for pointing that out! I will definitely go back to my choreography notes and see how the mistake crept in.

Thanks also for your kind compliments.

  • oh my God Ganesh (yes i know, i find him the most comfortable God to pray to) although i luv Jesus too. both Gods r so sweeet, they accept appologies.

  • im a beginner in this dance and i hope someday i can dance as gracefully as you.... nice videos!

  • You'll be exceptional; I'm sure of it! ;)

Thank you for your kind words and your support!

  • @JaiKhalsa im beginning to learn this piece now! i have been wanting to learn it since i saw u in this video! :) blessings and waiting for your new video

  • @razzmatazz1974: How exciting! Congrats - have fun learning it! Shall upload a new video soon.... :)

  • Jai I must say.. u were relli graceful and danced so well.. i jus; loved it..!!

    xoxo..

    devanshi

  • Thank you, Devanshi!

  • Namaste Jai Khalsa, first of all let me tell you that you are a wonderful dancer. I would like to know where can I get this songs for dancing bharatnatyam. I am starting with and I dont know where I can get all the songs. Your Alarippu performance was lovely. Thanks!

  • Hi there! Thank you for your generous words. I appreciate them so much! Glad you enjoyed the Alarippu; it's one of my favorites!

I'm not sure where - or how - you can get the various songs for performing. Where do you live, what kind of teacher are you studying with, and which items have you learned so far? Your teacher should be able to help you get a copy of any songs that you are taught in his/her class.

  • you are a master at dancing. steps, movement and expressions are perfect. i like the way you danced confidently. you are extremely wonderful dancer.

  • Thank you; you're so kind! :)

  • I have to watch this once a day just for obstacle removal tips...

  • Obstacle removal tip #242:

You don't always need dynamite to get an obstacle out of the way; sometimes you can just go over it, under it, or around it.....

    :)

  • really beautiful...... i love your emotion and expression for the song, there were PERFECT! U r gorgeous as well !! Excellent babe!!!

  • I mean THEY were perfect !!! and Yea, i will forward this video to ma frens... btw.. .im from Malaysia. :)

  • I'm so grateful that people as far away as Malaysia are able to see these videos; amazing! Thank you for your appreciation and support!

  • hey there, i loved your videos, though some r not available in my country and a few had muted videos. Hope to see more of ur performances... consider me your sincere fan :)!

  • So kind! Thank you!!

  • so beautiful, dear...thank you very much! my daughter have a lessons of BN and I love this form of art too ;)

  • So glad you're learning this one. It's a great piece. You'll enjoy performing it later. :)

  • yes. im enjoying it. indeed, i finished learning this dance. it's a great piece.

  • was it difficult to go in a circle?

I always find it hard to do pancha nadai (tha ka kita's) to the left.

It's actually quite funny, i'll do the right, and then to the left i look like an infant trying to learn how to walk.

haha, idk why i'm telling you this. haha. Just thought of it, and no one here to talk to right now, on account of it's late at night, so thought i might type it. :)
