Isen't the GT the na and the GT-S the turbo. I have a gen 3 swapped '91 and the clip had the GT emblem on it but it was the gen 3 turbo engine and lsd trans. We figured the car had to have been swapped in japan before having been shipped to the states, confusing, lol.
@TheOmegaeyes Both GT and GT-S are the turbo versions in stock trim. The N/A model is called the G-Limited or G. so your clip with the GT emblem is just a regular stock turbo.
@youngweezy11 Then what differentiates the GT from the GT-S? If they are comparing gen2 to gen3 turbo then it makes sense but I was thinking this was turbo vs. na. If the GT and GT-S are both turbo then this must be 3sgte ct26 vs. 3sgte ct20b correct? I'm still not clear, lol.
The gen3 gets a huge gain in performance mostly from the turbo since it can maintain it's full 13psi boost to 7200 RPM. The gen2 made 9psi in the US and 11psi in Japan but both lost boost after around 5700 RPM.
i disagree. the gen3 motor was just a better 3sgte. 8.5:1 compresson, oil filter relocated to the bottom, metal headgasket, factory catch can, bigger injectors, etc...
If you read my post the gain in performance is the turbo because it can keep up with the engine at all revs. Not sure what you didn't agree with. Most GEN2 owners that buy the GEN3 turbocharger say it almost closes the performance gap.
yes, the ct20 is the common upgrade for gen2 owners. but it's still nowhere close to gen3 specs and it's performance in stock form. as for closing the performance gap between the engines by upgrading to the ct20, not by much. the gen3 is a way better engine overall. and, the apex pfc is a simple pnp setup for the gen3.
It's extremely amazing how the MR2 Turbo was underestimated...was just watching a video of the 370Z, 135i, S2000 and the Cayman only one made it in the 13s and if you dare to compare a MR2 Turbo to them they would laugh at you. That actually is the reason why I owned a MR2 Turbo and loved it!
it's not lower spec. it just isn't optioned. the gts only comes in a hardtop and loses mostly all of the options that the gt has. if you're going to build a racecar, the gts is the one to have. if you want a street car, get the GT with t-tops.
lower spec... hmmm, that's debatable. how about just saying that it's the "race spec" and call it a day. and the GTS does NOT come in t-tops. they were purely hardtop "race specs".
Well, I wouldn't call the gts trace spec cos most customers chose many of the options that came standard on the gt version. So the only real difference is the badge. I'm a moderator on the uk MR2 forum. We have 20,000 members. Believe me when I say the gts tbar model exists. In fact I'd go as far as saying the gts t-bar is actually more common that the gt t-bar. By the way, I'm talking about the jdm model turbo, not the US versions.
interesting... i'm in canada and we get a lot of jdm imports from japan. every single mr2 gts that i've seen imported were all hardtops. i've yet to see a gts t-top... have yet to even see a picture of one!
I disagree mate. Rev2 turbos put out a lot more torque than Rev3s. Get a 300bhp of each and the Rev2 will hit 280lbft whereas the Rev3 will be around 260lbft. And torque equals acceleration. I agree the Rev3+ 3SGTE is the better engine, but put the ct20b in a rev2, raise the boost to 13psi (as per a stock rev3) and you won't see any real difference between the two.
There is only a 20hp diifference. The CT20 will close most of that gap at the same boost level in the gen 2. If your going beyond stock performance with stock parts the Gen3 is way better it can take 18lb's with a boost controller and little else.
When was the newer model made year wise? Was it in America, or did we have the same engine spec mr2 just turbo and n/a? I'm thinking about buy a 2nd gen mr2 so that's why I'm wondering if I should look for a newer year model.
the north american spec cars are crap compared to the jap ones (they always are). we only ever got the gen2 engine. never the gen3. but if you're planning to mod the car (like 90% of mr2 owners do), there's really not much difference once you get past 320hp. but if you're gonna do an engine swap, go for the gen3. it's a better motor all around.
Boost is 13psi vs 11psi and compression ratio is 8.5:1 vs 8.8:1. The updated engine offen reffered to as the 3rd generation or GEN3. The other engine is GEN2.

@TheOmegaeyes . The MR2 in Japan was sold as either a GT-S or GT, the GT having a higher equipment specification.
The GT-S has cloth trim, and GT has leather/ suede trim and extra features such as full climate control rather than normal air-conditioning.

1991-95 USDM GEN2 200HP 1/4 14.7s
1991-93 JDM GEN2 225HP 1/4 14.2s
1994-98 JDM GEN3 245HP 1/4 13.2s

If you search YouTube, you'll see a video of a stock gen2 225bhp putting down a 13.7s quarter mile. But yes, the gen3 is quicker in stock form.

GT and GTS are the turbo models. GTS is lower spec than the GT and marginally lighter because of the fewer options included.

By default the fact the gts isn't optioned as highly as the gt, it means it's lower spec. The gts is available as a t-bar also.

Just put the CT20b turbo from the gen3 on to your gen 2. It's a direct swap.

different cam timing, turbo, injectors, relocated oil filter, MAP sensor instead of AFM, I'm probably forgetting a few other changes.
