The pool round was in a mix up. In the pool was smith, reinoso, and the russian. Smith teched the russian, the russian beat reinoso, and reinoso beat smith. But because smith scored the most points off all three opponents, he won the pool and made the semi's
Wrong, John won the Gold b/c of the 3-way tie in the pool. John beat the Russian (Azizov) 17-1, and Reinoso lost to Azizov 11-6. They didn't use a regular bracket system like HS and College back then.
Because at this point Smith was guaranteed a spot in the gold medal match as long as he didn't lose big to Reinoso. He had already teched the Russian that beat Reinoso. Reinoso on the other hand had to win in order to qualify for the bronze medal match.
True, but I am sure that Smith would prefer a win, as a loss tends to give that Gold medal performance a hollow feeling. And, why would he have not thrown the match in regulation and save energy if that was the plan? I agree fully that Smith is the better wrestler, but Reinoso matched up well against him and came in with a solid game plan.
I wrestled him as a kid at on eof his training camps. Even in his old age with knees like basketballs he was far and away the fastest man I have ever seen.

Impossible. If Smith beat Azizov 17-1 and Azizov beat Reinoso 11-6, Smith would have STOMPED Reinoso big time.

Maybe Smith took it easy on Reinoso?

Why would he do that when he had lost to him previously?

Good old Lazaro went to my college Carson-Newman College in Tennessee. Was a 4 time D2 all-american.
