this is a common problem in puppies that are bought at pet stores or from non-reputable breeders or that have been separated from their mothers too early. The puppies are kept in crates all the time and they learn to go potty in it. You have a hard job ahead of you cracking this habit, but if you are positive(never scold the dog), consistent and patient you will get results. Good luck
im getting a puppy soon...but i live in a apartment....whats a good thing to do so the puppy could go inside the apartment without making a mess...i saw the newspaper training but is there other ways????
to teach it to ring the bell: first off hang a bell by the door. every time you take your dog outside, take his paw and ring the bell with it. then praise him or give him a treat, and take him out. if he does his business, give another treat or lavish praise. make a big deal of it =D
u kno this lady is actually right about the whole punishing thing cause i know a little brat 10 yr old that smacks it and grabs its mouth and hits it a bunch of times, its sad! i wish her mother would watch this!
today i took my 8 week old staffordshire bull terrier home. She has diarrhea so u can only imagine the mess, neva mind the smell lol. Tomorrow is when house training starts. She in whining at the moment so iam doing my best at ignoring her.Being firm from the start. Wish me look lol
Very informative, not sure how I would teach her to ring the bell as she will be very small about 7 weeks but we'll see. I am going to confine her in the kitchen, and she will go out only under supervision and on the leash. Don't have a crate so will have to be in her bed. You shouldn't let the puppy roam in the whole house without supervision, ours is not going to bedroom at all.
Dogs are smart. they should be able to learn. you ring the bell every time you go out, and the dog should ring the bell when he/she wants to go out. :)
its not working the no yelling or punishing the puppy and she still pees everywhere! and i'll take her outside in the yard and she doesnt go and she comes back in the house and 5 minutes later she has peed!
That's the same thing my puppy does. Is you puppy crate trained? This is very important to house training because dogs will usually not "go" in the place they have as their "den" (their crate). That is why if your going to be gone, don't give ur dog to much freedom, put them in the crate. This doesn't give him/her an option to hold it or not...they must hold it. Also, keep your puppy on a "pull along" least all the time so u can keep him/her next to you. That way u can immediately go outside! =]
no its not, if it was bigger the dog could pee on one side and sleep on the other. A dog will not pee in the crate if they have to sleep there too. A common mistake made by new owners are that they buy the pup a crate that is too big. :)
yea but if the dog is goin to grow big, then its better to get a big crate that brings a divider. so u can make the crate as small or as big as u want.
We trained our collie to ring a bell to go outside (this was before clickers). All we did was ring the bell each time we let her out and said "Good girl". She picked it up pretty quickly. Only problem was that she started ringing the bell with her paw, which caused some scratches in the back door...
I hate to pick up dog poop from the training pads until i found flushable dog poop bags :) life saver....

we got my dog to dance at the door when she has to go and now I'm getting a pug and I'm a bit nervous and don't really know how to potty train her

Why the need to toss the treat on the floor--thereby ending up teaching the puppy that it is OK to pick things up from the floor and eat them
What specifically is lost by giving the puppy the reward-treat straight from the trainer's/family member's hand?

Your crate may be too big. If it is, he can find a corner to 'go' in it. :)
