@Cjjr72984 - Walter Hill originally felt Eddie Murphy wasn't "tough" enough for the role of Reggie Hammond, but he won Hill over for the role and was casted as the "semi-tough", street con. This stunt man can be seen periodically through the film. For instance, near the end of the film when Ganz 'trips him up' in the alley just before the final showdown with Jack Cates.
Would you be? *lol* Willing that is? I wouldn't. Considering the amount of money that was on the line. It was like a half a million dollars hanging in the balance. He confessed bc TIME was running out. If he's dancing with Cates in the streets of San Francisco, Ganz and Luther and co. could have made off with the money. But I thought I established that point already...oh well. I for one, am not a hater of reiteration. *lol* From Reggie's perspective, it was ALWAYS about the money.
@SidJustice1 We can go back and forth but that won't change the fact that at the end of the day (or night for that matter) Jack got his way. Reggie did not want to tell jack about the money but jack "forced" it out of him! If reggie was "always" about the money, he would had never risked losing the cash by telling some cop he didn't know about it. He ONLY did it because he had no way out with Jack being in his face and didn't want to go through that again risking losing his front teeth.
@Tusc9969 - Oh, I don't mind. (back and forth is good exercise *lol*) I don't think Reggie cared about his teeth too much, 500k would have bought a good partial. What don't you get about the word "time? I mean, c'mon, the movie is called 48hrs for pete's sake. Yeah, Jack forced his hand, and I even said Jack was "holding all the cards" in my past of these series of comments.. He had to tell him @ some point, fight or no fight.
@SidJustice1 My friend, lol if you consider ytubing one another exercise, I'd suggest taking a walk of atleast 10 minutes a day before it's too late ;)
I have no earthly idea what Reggie would have done with his 500k or his front teeth...But, What I do know is that regardless of what the movie was called,Jack "forced his hand" and got what he wanted to know...something Reggie did not want to do since AGAIN he felt Jack would take all of his loot! Reggie lucked out that Jack was a straight arrow.
@Tusc9969 Ah, the would be more of cerebral exercise ; )
I'm pretty fit (for my age), but I'll take that advice, sir *lol*
And I agreed with all of the above. Reggie even tried to negotiate a deal once he confessed. I like how Jack played around and said he works on a "merit system". Reggie could have made off with that loot when he went after Luther. Jack even questioned why he didn't do it. I guess that made Reggie something of a straight arrow himself. This is why I thought Reggie
@Tusc9969 - cont. had it in him to confess about the money. OK, let's say Ganz gotta hold of the money and was captured, killed or whatever and the money was seized within 48hrs. Reggie tells Jack, "Hey, this is my money he was after all along." Then it's the moment of truth; Does Jack let him keep it, does he split it with him or he takes it under seizure. Like I said, I wouldn't have told him either but if the money was seized and Ganz was captured, Reggie would have been forced to cont.
@SidJustice1 Agreed on that. I remember seeing this back in 82 xmas day in a smokey theater when I was a teenager and remember being amazed by it. It is definetly up there (if not higher) with lethal weapon. The dialogue, the score, the action, the dark humor..Great script indeed, Walter Hill's biggest hit to date and Eddie's finest role imo!
If you look at that last punch cates threw, he clearly used all of his force and was out of gas, and Reggie had his fist cocked ready to land on Cates before the cops came
Lets not argue about something CINEMATIC. This is a STAGED "fight". The only people that ultimately determine who won the "fight" are the writer and director. I've been trying to find the making of this movie without buying the dvd. When this movie was aired on cinemax 10 years ago, there was a behind the scenes moment with the director's commentary.I forgot who he said was suppose to win the "fight".I've been watching it since the 80's and 90's trying to judge.I give up because it's JUST A MOVIE!
There are 2 elements that can determine who won a fight. These elements are physical damage and punch count. Eddie seemed to have less damages than the cop. The cop was left with cuts and bruises that were visible for the duration of the movie. The punch count was about even, although the cop cheated by catching eddie off guard outside of the car which was the first punch and in the car just before he drives off. I have it about tied. Do you guys think either of them won?
@captkirk9797 I dunno about that...even though reggie was outclassing Jack with his fists and making jack miss, take a look at 1:57 and you can see that Reggie was knocked out on his feet by a punch which is why Reggie wasn't punching back!
At first I thought Eddie was dazed by a punch, but if that were the case, he would've been grounded after recieving any other hits. The fact that he was still standing after about 4 more punches tells me that he wasn't knocked out but exhausted. He did own the first half of the fight which could've resulted in him not having much energy left during the last few seconds. I wonder if he would have gained control again had the fight not been interrupted. What do you guys think?
@SleetThaSnowman BOTH guys were exhausted but I still say reggie was stunned by a hard punch he didn't see coming.Look at 2:00 and check out reggie's eyes and the way he was stumbling backwards on his unstable jello like legs..he was unresponsive and clearly looked unconscious! Not everyone respond the same way to knock-out blows..some fall instantly while others continue to receive punches still standing unconsciously..hence "knocked out on their feet".Reggie was too far gone to regain anything.
@Tusc9969 I'm pretty sure you're not a physician. You couldn't possibly have enough knowledge about physics or anatomy to tell the difference between a fighter's face when he's knocked out or suffering from severe fatigue. If a fighter has used every millibyte of energy,he won't fight back! This may have been what reggie did.The cop collapsed after throwing his own punch which could've given eddie a chance to catch up.The cop fell earlier from eddie's jab.Was that not a knock out?! Are u biased?
@SleetThaSnowman 1,lets not make assumptions about one another considering we don't know each other to make that judgement.2,No i'm not physicist, never claimed to be NOR do you have to be one to know if someone's been stunned in a fight.Reg was out of it and unresponsive, look at his eyes the way he was no longer looking at jack.No matter how exhausted you are, you're not going to stand there and receive 6-7 unanswered clean punches w/out trying to fight back or protecting yourself! He was out!
How do I know what Im talking about?I train young boxers on my spare time and been doing so for 8 years.I've seen my share of hurt guys in the ring(being one of them myself).Jack and Reggie threw around the same number of punches and there's no way that a larger, heavier, older guy like Jack would out stamina a much younger leaner guy like Reggie!Jack was never knocked out,he was struck by a one-two that knocked him off-balance causing him to trip over garbage cans(notice how jack kicks the cans)
@Tusc9969 "Knocked off balance" can possibly be defined as knocked out! Can't fighters lose their balance from knock out punches?! Jack kicked the can because he was frustrated by the fact that HE WAS LOSING the boxing match. That's why he used his size to turn it into a wrestling match.Reggie was hitting jack with flurry after flurry. No wonder jack had more energy than reggie at the end.Reggie's jabs kept jack's ass RESTING on the ground and jack's back RESTING on the wall for most of the fight!
@SleetThaSnowman Evidently Reggie was a trained boxer and boxers(amateur or pro) are trained to have excellent stamina and endurance through the toughest bouts. How in the hell is a heavier, older guy like Jack going to have more stamina than a younger trained boxer like Reggie?
Fact is,Reggie was knocked out on his feet by a heavy blow he didn't see coming and Jack took advantage of it by hitting him 6 more times in the row to the face!
Total 7 punches!Re-watch the scene and count the punches!
@Tusc9969 - Cates put all his force in that last punch. Hammond was right over him ready to fire one of his own when the cops pulled up. Cates was bone-dry out of gas and Hammond was on fumes.
@Tusc9969 - In would have been pointless to fight again. The only reason why Reggie fought him in the first place is bc Jack sucker punched him. Plus, Hammond needed to get that 500k...time was running out on his "freedom" and cash.
@SidJustice1 I agree that it would have been pointless for them to fight again but reggie wasn't THAT willing to tell Jack about the cash because he thought Jack was a dirty cop that probably would had ripped him off. So Jack kinda forced him to confess to him about the money or else get a another beatdown. Reggie budged!
@Tusc9969 - Oh, he "budged", huh? *lol* First off, Cates was holding all the cards. He's the one that "sprung" Hammond for this excursion in the first place. They needed EACH OTHER. I think 500k outranked another fight with Cates. It just would have been a waste of time. Especially, with only 48hrs to do it. It was obvious Cates could take an ass whipping. *lol*
@SidJustice1 Yes he BUDGED! Reggie never intended on telling Jack anything about the money!Reggie figured he would use Jack's help to stop the guys that had his money.Jack knew Reggie was keeping something from him,so jack FORCED IT out of him!Point is,Reggie could have said "F you, I know nothing if you wanna go another round then lets do it but I know nothing" instead of RISKING losing the money to Jack who could have been a greedy corrupt cop for all he knew.Jack obviously didn't fear reggie!
@Tusc9969 - He also could have took off with the money once he tracked Luther down in that apartment. But he didn't. He stayed and was a man of his word, "Wanting to nail Ganz as bad as Cates." Cates I believe had a vested interest as well...considering his fellow officer was gunned down with his own gun. So that would explain his persistence in catching Ganz. Jack may have not feared Reggie, but he OBVIOUSLY RESPECTED him; Standing up to his captain and all. Jack also earned Reggie's respect.
@Tusc9969 - You're saying this like Cates is some kind of "one-man-show" *lol*. Once again, they couldn't have done this without each other. And AGAIN, it would have been a waste of time to fight (Cates already was sportin' some cuts and bruise courtesy of the "New Sheriff of Torchy's")...machismo vs.money...I'll take the money. Good job, Reggie *lol*
@SidJustice1 From your perspective it as "machismo vs money"
From reggie's perspective it was "machismo vs corrupt cop who will take my money"
Once again reggie did not want to say anything about the money to Jack but was FORCED TO.
You make it sound as if the ONLY reason reggie confessed was because he already knew jack would let him keep the money. AND I never said it was a "one man show"...they won out of teamwork yes, only reggie wasn't so willing in the beginning like you make it sound!
@Tusc9969 Even jack knew he didn't give reggie a beatdown as u say. That's why he changed his wording since the first time when he said "you're gonna get the shit beat out of you." Then,(after the fight) seeing that reggie could hang with a bigger opponent,he respects him enough to say "WE'RE going at it again".If he felt he won the first round,he would've said: you're gonna get your ass beat again.Later, cops even teased jack by saying he got beat by a "soul brotha".Hmmm..who could that be?
4.Jack did get his face tattooed by reggie's punches and I never disputed that but Jack got his in return towards the second half of the fight! Whether Reggie was ahead by a few points or not didn't matter since this wasn't a boxing match.
5.And for your information, In a boxing ring it doesn't matter how many points/rounds you are ahead... if you get your ass knocked out or TKOED by a lucky punch in the last round, you're done!
@Tusc9969 You are SOOO contradictory. At first, you said "reggie outclassed jack with his fists and made jack miss".Those were your exact words. Now,you say reggie recieved a "beatdown".In a beatdown,1 person is active while the other inaffective. That wasn't the case in this scene. Reggie unleashed almost as many blows on jack and tattooed him with cuts and bruises that were visible for the remainder of the flick. If this were a boxing bout with scores, reggie would've been tied if not ahead.
I said that "reggie outclassed jack with his fists and made jack miss" I ALSO stated "Reggie was knocked out on his feet by a punch which is why reggie wasn't punching back!" If you're going to quote me,quote the whole statement! He landed a heavy blow out of nowhere that reggie didn't see coming and stunned reggie temporarily following 8 unanswered blows in a row..that constitutes a beatdown.Had it been a boxing bout the ref would had stepped in to prevent him from receiving further punishment!
@Tusc9969 I only needed to quote the contradictory part of what you said,NOT the whole thing. It's clear u know nothing about professional boxing being that "outclassing someone with fists and making them miss" is worth several points on the score cards. The ref wouldn't have stopped the fight because of 5 unanswered head blows.YES,FIVE! 3 of the punches were to the body which made reggie woozey BEFORE the head blows. That tells me he wasn't knocked out but winded.Don't u know what body blows do?!
1.I could give a good fart whether u think I know anything about boxing or not!
2.Body blows either tires/winds your opponent OR knocks them on their ass if hit on the liver NOT DAZE or STUN an opponent.
3.Reggie was hit 7 times in a row after the body blows and it was the first one he didn't see coming that dazed him. LOOK AT REGGIE'S EYES FOR PETE SAKES THERE WAS NO EYE CONTACT....IT WAS EVIDENT HE WASN'T ALL THERE.
Bullshit! Eddie should have handed that white cop his Irish ass back to him...but the script said "No Ed, you've gotta drop your stone guard at the end for no reason and let the white man get a few licks in."...fucking bullshit.
this is one of eddie's best movie and performances he and nick nolte should of gotten oscar nods however murphy did get a golden globe nod for his performance in this! great work!!!!
Nolte and Murphy each punch each other the exact same number of times. The fight begins with Murphy landing more punches on Nolte, but then Nolte catches up by the end of the sequence. However, if you count correctly, you'll notice that Nolte is still one punch behind Murphy. That's why once they are both back sitting in the car, about to drive off, Nolte suddenly lands one last knuckle sandwich squarely on Murphy's jaw, and they are even.
BTW, this is one of my favorite films from the 1980s.
LMAO! Man, I'm so glad somebody posted this scene and even more glad that somebody else besides me loves this fight! Reggie was goin' to school on Cates in this scene!
LOL! Sho'nuff! And Reggie had that Sugar Ray Leonard speed. Jack kept trying to put too much into one hit and Reggie was just dancing about, deckin' him whenever he left his guard down. All this scene needs now is a commentator calling out what's happenin;
'Cates has Hammond on the ropes, he's trying to lay into him...w-wait, wait just a minute folks. Sugar Ray Hammond's fighting back...he gets a left jab, a brutal right cross, Cates looks winded, he's gettin' frustrated...
Lol! You can clearly see the stunt man's face in about half of this fight.

5.And for your information, In a boxing ring it doesn't matter how many points/rounds you are ahead... if you get your ass knocked out or TKOED by a lucky punch in the last round, you're done!

@SleetThaSnowman 6. Jack was gamed for a round 2 (clearly not fearing Reggie) and Reggie wanted no part of it!
Tusc9969 2 weeks ago

Tusc9969 3 weeks ago
@Tusc9969 I only needed to quote the contradictory part of what you said,NOT the whole thing. It's clear u know nothing about professional boxing being that "outclassing someone with fists and making them miss" is worth several points on the score cards. The ref wouldn't have stopped the fight because of 5 unanswered head blows.YES,FIVE! 3 of the punches were to the body which made reggie woozey BEFORE the head blows. That tells me he wasn't knocked out but winded.Don't u know what body blows do?!
SleetThaSnowman 2 weeks ago
@SleetThaSnowman

Reggie: Put me in the fuckin' garbage!
LMAO! Man, I'm so glad somebody posted this scene and even more glad that somebody else besides me loves this fight! Reggie was goin' to school on Cates in this scene!

@sabre926 - His form was perfect in the beginning of the fight. Connecting nicely with those straight jabs.

LOL! Sho'nuff! And Reggie had that Sugar Ray Leonard speed. Jack kept trying to put too much into one hit and Reggie was just dancing about, deckin' him whenever he left his guard down. All this scene needs now is a commentator calling out what's happenin;
'Cates has Hammond on the ropes, he's trying to lay into him...w-wait, wait just a minute folks. Sugar Ray Hammond's fighting back...he gets a left jab, a brutal right cross, Cates looks winded, he's gettin' frustrated...
LOL!
