By your way of thinking, just thinking about pianists that I love; Tommy Flanagan, Wynton Kelly, Sonny Clark, Hank Jones, Red Garland and dozens of other pianists aren't worth anyone's time because they aren't Bill Evans, McCoy Tyner or Keith Jarrett or Bud Powell, or Brad Mehldau.
Well put, Mr. Eisenman! No disrespect to the innovators of the world, but it's often the master craftsmen who make the greatest music. Take Bach, for instance, who was viewed by many of his contemporaries as antiquated in style. With the wide availability of mp3s and youtube videos people so often overlook the fact that innovation is, and always will be, a rare occurance. I mean, how many Coltranes and Parkers were there back in the day? Time to listen to some Hank Jones!
jazzcombo251said " they are incredible players but they haven't created anything new for the music."
Since when is that the goal of musicians?
Music at its best is an expression of feeling, and if we the listeners are lucky it also strikes a chord (pun intended) in us. That is the ultimate goal. To be, or even attempt to be, the next Coltrane is a mugs game.
I'd recognize either Kirk of Lorne in a couple of notes. That means they each have a voice. That should be enough for any listener.
This was a beautiful session, the other tunes are as good. Kirk is by far and away one of the best tenors in jazz. As everything Canadian, it's understated but all the big commercial names have nothing on him. He can handle anything. bop, Coltrane, ballads and play in any format.
I've seen Kirk and Lorne perform in duet in Toronto, a couple of times, and the shows remain as some f my best memories of jazz.
that is definitely very true but neither of these players are doing anything very creative or different. they are incredible players but they haven't created anything new for the music. That's why these player aren't as well known as other musicians that are more commercial or well known.
Lorne was my guitar teacher at Mohawk college (Hamilton, Ontario). His knowledge is astounding. He gave me an A as my grade for the semester he taught me. Thank you Mr. Lofsky.
Lorne is simply amazing. Ive mentioned his name on some of the Breau sites here just to enlighten people that there is someone taking it were Lenny left off...
Lorne is a very nice man, and a wonderful guitarist who has played with greats like Oscar Peterson. It's cool that he uses that 80s Ibanez solidbody guitar, too!
I met Lofsky at a masterclass, very informative class he gave. Not only a great musician, teacher, but very easy to talk to, no ego. Learned alot from him.
Simply amazing! Lorne Lofsky has been one of my favourite jazz guitarists for quite a while. Hey meesterbenja, do u happen to know what amp he used at the time when this was recorded? I'd love to know...
Handude, I spoke with Lorne a couple of years ago about his amp and he told me it's actually just one of those old orange Roland Cubes. The reason it's a piggy back is that he had some problems with the amp and at some point ended up having the actual amplifier section taken out of the chassis and put into a separate head. Glad you enjoyed the video. Lorne's the man!
Thank you for such a valuable information! I'm totally obsessed with his tone. I'm actually considering about selling my old Polytone MiniBrute II and getting a Roland JC120... would a JC sound a bit warmer than the Mini-brute? Polytones are just not my type
If I had to give you some advise I'd definitely say don't go for the JC-120...that's not the right type of sound at all for this type of thing. Find one of the old orange cubes (cube30 or cube60) or even one of the new roland cubes. Another great option is the new Hendriksen "Jazzamp" which I've recently tried and found that it sounds great. Still, if you're looking for the Lorne or Ed Bickert type of sound they're using the old orange Roland cubes. Hope that helped.
Lorne actually plays with an old Yamaha. He hasn't been using the Roland for about 12 years now. He has also replaced his pick-ups with cool rails. His tone is much rounder now, but still maintaining that warm mid-tone.
I've seen him use the Roland in the last couple of years...although I've definitely seen him use the Yamaha a bit too, a little more than a year ago at Mezetta in a duo with Reg Schwager come to think of it...used to go hear him play with Kirk at the Rocket a few years ago when Kirk was playing there Fridays and Lorne was usually using the Roland on that gig. That was when I asked him about the head on top...probably about '02 or '03.
No, didn't ever check him out there. I don't actually live in Toronto at the moment and I don't think that one was happening when I was last there. Is it still happening? Maybe I can check it out when I'm in town?
Hello, recently I had a chance to take a close look at his guitar, and as you said he got his pickups changed to cool rails... So I'm guessing he's not using the EMG SPC thing anymore? If so, are they just regular volume & tone controls now?
Incredible!

Its a shame is no longer there. Same with Reg Schwagger, he left a couple years ago also.

I think he still teaches at York University, however.

I met Kirk Mcdonald today.
He gave me an autograph.
He's extremely nice and talented.
I was at Humber college at the time he was rating the bands from the festival.

Lorne and Kirk play the most intelligent improv together.
Lorne is one of the best, if not the best jazz guitar player, and not enough people know about him...it's a shame.

I talked to him yesterday, and there is nothing booked for Chalkers rite now, but he is playing at Mazetta on May 2nd with Rob Pilch...I think.

Thanks for checking minionette, I probably won't be back until at least July so I guess I won't be able to enjoy that one.

He still has the EMG mid boost. It's built into his guitar. Heavy strings too. 13's.
