Also . . . KABC's "3:30 Movie" was the first of the afternoon movie shows of the ABC O&O's to bite the dust, on Sept. 12, 1980. (Come Sept. 15, there was "The World of People" at 3:30, followed by a 4 P.M. edition of "Eyewitness News" anchored by Jerry Dunphy and Tawny Little.) The next to ax their afternoon movies, in that order, were WABC New York (in 1981), WXYZ Detroit (in 1982), WLS Chicago (in 1984) and finally KGO San Francisco (in 1985).
At 2:47, I was only 2 weeks old on leap year day 1980 when the "Miracle on ice" occured in the Winter olympics when the USA hockey team beat the Soviets...and we won a gold medal. Some sports and world historians alike agreed this is the best way we defeated the USSR & the cold war ended a decade later with the USA came out the lone superpower.
Yeah, those commercials of that ex-mouseketeer. Anyone seen the 1970's MMC? It's what killed disco! Oh...the horror of watching it! Bring back her! +
I used to watch MMC in the mid-70s; I had a crush on Lisa Whelchel.
If MMC killed disco, it wasn't alone. Ask those thousands who descended on the Comiskey Park ballfield in 79 in that "Disco Demolition Night." Methinks that put disco's death into high gear.
Just about a month before this, my folks and I completed the move from Louisiana(Who Dat...?) to Western New York.
Let's see... Leap Year Day 1980 was a Friday.
The short local rodeo ad likely means the event was coming very soon and they wanted people to really take note.
My guess is the "Girl Most Likely To" would've been on the 26th, which puts "What's Up, Doc?" on the 25th... part of "Crazy Gals Week," if I could take a stab at it.
The B&W parental reminders was like a guardian angel for generation X kids to be protected...NOT. It gotten worse after Adam Walsh's abduction at the time and we all know where father John Walsh end up as...hysterical crime fighter.
At 1:10 a TV Guide advertisement, the so-called most common book to have in the house except for the Holy Bible (so true).
At 2:00, what minor league teams are that? This is when the California League began to attract fans and the majors later took notice. +
Noticed a few people from commercials notable today. Somewhat. Lol. Cynthia Gibb was in the astringent commercial. She went on to play Karen Carpenter in the The Karen Carpenter story, and was Louise opposite Bette Midler in the Gypsy TV remake. Also, the boy from Disney's Escape to Witch Mountain was in the Doublemint commercial. LOL.
gotta love the double mint gum commercial ! I still wear tights just like the 70s & 80s and notice the retro knee-high cheerleader socks!! Come on, guys....You know those socks and tights are great!!!
Updated info... for those interested, the FuzzyMemories website plans to post the "3:30 Movie"(WLS/Chicago) music, intro, outro, bumpers, etc., within the next few days.
Those of you who have connections with KABC or KGO... would you know of any accessibility to the "3:30 Movie" stuff from LA or SanFran? Thanx.
That would be great... if you have connections with KABC or WLS, or even KGO, and they have old film of the open, bumpers, and close of the 3:30 movie, please have them post it here.
BTW... I like the public service reminder at the start of this clip... kinda like WKBW's "Did your kids do their homework yet?" at 7PM, and "Do you know where your children are?" at 11PM here in Buffalo. All they did in NYC was just the cameraman logo, "The 4:30 Movie," and the movie's title.
I would guess so. Maybe someone form ABC could fill us in. If Im not mistaken both KABC & WABC were O & O stations, so they might have been directed to have similar "looks" and content, if for no other reason so save money on production resources like bumps.
KGO in San Francisco and WLS in Chicago each had "3:30 Movie's" (although in the early 1970's the former was on at a later time and called "The 6:30 Movie," and the latter moved a half-hour earlier in 1980 and was known as "The 3:00 Movie" until its cancellation in 1984), and Detroit's WXYZ's equivalent was "The 4:00 Movie."
(Part 2) Looking at an old 1970 TV Guide, I see at that time KABC's daily movie show would've been called "The 6:00 Movie," then "The 6:30 Movie" after the 1971 Prime Time Access Rule, before the reshuffling of the scheduling deck and settling down at 3:30. As was also the case at KGO in San Francisco.
(Part 3) KABC's daily movie show had been at 6:00 from about 1964 to Sept. 10, 1971, 6:30 from Sept. 13, 1971 to March 29, 1974, and finally 3:30 from April 1, 1974 to Sept. 12, 1980.
OMG. The Girl Most Likely To -- one of the best TV movies ever made. I remember seeing that in a rerun when I was a kid, and it was hilarious. (It might even have been that 3:30 movie.) It's definitely worth seeing if you can track it down. Stockard Channing steals the whole show.
Hey cool video, but post it as a video response on one of my promo's for WLS' 3:30 Movie, I think that would be a more appropriate connection than the WSNS video. :-)

The "parental reminder" was like Buffalo and WKBW at 7(ask if kids did homework) and 11(where are the kids?) at night.
That 1st part, in NY, would've been the last 5 sec of "4:30 movie" music with the cameraman, and the slide would be the cameraman on the side.

Correct me if I'm mistaken, but wasn't KABC's "3:30 Movie" along the lines of, say, "The 4:30 Movie" on WABC-TV, format-wise?

Was that Danny Dark doing the VO for the 3:30 movie?
jwgreek8606 4 years ago
Definitely. Probably my favorite voiceover guy of all time. And as I was typing this, I hear Harry Newman (KCOP and Cops) in this same clip.

Do you happen to have the OLD 3:30 Movie open and music? The one with the trumpet?
