We've still got one penny and two pence coins here in the UK. Not sure how long they can last. I heard that they were going to start making our 5p, 10p and (I think) 20p coins out of steel from this year, although I haven't come across any yet.

I don't know why they wouldn't just swap out the copper nickel with cheaper metals, which I suspect the U.S. will do for the nickel. U.S. in the meantime made it illegal to melt down the U.S. nickel(and pennies) a few years back. It shouldn't matter, it's expected nickels will follow what happened to silver U.S. coins of hoarding and trading as is instead of melting, once they get to 2x-3x face value. I long ago grabbed a few hundred dollars of boxes of nickels for the occasion:)
