I was 7 when this 'happening' took place & I can vaguely remember my mother being taken off to the 'asylum',yet again & my father playing one of her albums 'cause it was the only way to get me to 'keep quiet'.Ever since,(& I'm now 51),I'll listen to her magnificent vocals & I'm transported back to those times. Not in a bad way,but 'cause her voice soothed me.Still does all these years later. So thanks Babs for sharing such a unique gift with me & many, many others.
Babs, I fell in love with you when I was a kid. I'm now 42 and I will love you forever. Saw you in New York in 2006 - a dream come true. Thanks for everything. x
A tracking shot like that was not easy in 1967. They had to pull back a large crane with a camera and cameraman on top. You can see the tracking platform at the bottom of the screen.
At this point I am worshiping the camera man and the sound recorder who preserved this performance for posterity. I will gladly kiss their feet or humble myself in any way necessary to convey my indebtness to them for their intuitve handling of this very remarkable moment!
This was the song that made her famous. I think when she first began singing it, she did it more like a dirge to emphasize the irony. I recall her doing it that way in 1961 at Chicago's Second City.
This is crazy but the reason why I actually look for this song was because of "Glee". I didn't even know it existed until I finally see Barbara perform (Incredible voice)!! LOL.
Interesting that the last few decades have obsessed over Monterey, Woodstock, Altamont etc. What about this gem of an outdoor concert? Mind you, she outclasses all the acts [rolled together], at those other events by a factor of a thousand.
How does one pick the best Streisand song? One can't. Superb virtually every time she picks material. I think she could sing the municipal statutes and find meaning and glory.
Barbra, I love you! You are the singer of the decades. The Diva of all Divas. I was hooked the first time I saw you on cbs tv. when I was 13. I have been trying to sing like you ever since. God bless your lovely talent.
Barbara - five decades of greatness! Barbara in my view is now the "First Lady of Song" a title previously given To the great Ella Fitzgerald. Barbara has earned it.
@filthyralph no problem! its funny that her best version of the song was sung in the seventies and yet she retools the tune for different concert series... have you heard the version where she sings it with a big ol choir behind her? or the one where shes singing ti for the democratic national convention?
I hear you! So very appropriate, too...makes me wonder, though (with great sadness) what has happened to this country?? Anyway, two absolutely magical nights; Central Park '67 and Election Night 2008
@stevesg92 I put it that way because in one of her early interviews she was very blase about the songs where she was loud, and she called it "alot of yelling". And in the latter part of the song she does sound good and riled up. Im sure I'll have plenty of people correcting me on that too. (as if I don't have every Streisand album, geez)
Ive seen atleast 3 videos of Barbra singing this song. 1 with Judy Garland (amazing) and a couple others that were of course fabulous, its Barbra HELLO.
But I think out of all those videos Barbra's voice in this one is perfect. Every note, every word, it couldn't get better.
to Jasjas2006: YES I really think so and not only that, our country is already 1000% better off than it has been under the Bush regime and his @sshole conservatives!

How does one pick Streisand's best. One can't. She could sing the municipal ordinances and make poetry and glory come out

I didn't mean it bad. She is belting her way through it, then. (I said I loved it...)

@sisalrug it's called belting not yelling.... anyone can yell, no one can belt like her... opera maybe but that stuff sounds horrible
