Also, I noticed that light skinned women have been the most vocal- as well as the most militant when it comes to this topic...ironically, they are the same women that benefitted from the same system they are railing against.
The fact that light skinned women are speaking up about it shows that they acknowledge the discrimination instead of denying it in hopes of perpetuating the benefit. I think there is something wrong when a black man only likes women that are remotely black (that means they barely even look black). It's sad when a black man doesn't even like African features even though he is of African descent. It's wrong when a man likes African features on non-black women (booty, tits, etc).

At first you were right, there were a lot of light-skinned women, but as the video progressed I saw a lot more darker-skinned women. I counted about 17 (give or take a few) darker-skinned women. @JoyDailytv I think one of the reasons maybe because our culture, as people of african descent,was never allowed to develop without influence from the dominate white culture. In fact if we look at the history of black americans there was a lot of the grass is greener on the other side syndrom. We fought to be included in a system that was not designed for us, instead of fighting to develop our own system seperate from the dominate white influence

With a song entitled "Pretty Girls" it would have been nice to see a message focused on the idea that there is beauty in every race, size, and complexion.
I really don't know how much control he had over the video's casting or concept for that matter, so I digress....

@MyJunior1975 I think she is bringing to light a very REAL topic for Black women. For awhile lighter complexion have garner the most attention whereas the darker skin tone was considered not to be on the radar at all. It has to do with self image, how we as black people ourselves subconsciously it would seem by the images we display and the things we say we don't think to highly of the darker skin tone.

@LADYB725 I know it's a very real topic, but it seems a little disingenous on her behalf- here's why. She's complaining about the overabundance of light skinned girls in Wale's video- and she's light skinned herself!!!!
I think it's laughable that any light skinned woman would object to this, when they benefitted from the whole issue of beauty and colorism. The whole thing seems really suspect to me.

@Thedarksecret1 It needs to be discussed, but as I have noticed over the years the topic has always centered around casting in music videos...and this has been going on for as long as music videos have been made.
Also, I noticed that light skinned women have been the most vocal- as well as the most militant when it comes to this topic...ironically, they are the same women that benefitted from the same system they are railing against.

The fact that light skinned women are speaking up about it shows that they acknowledge the discrimination instead of denying it in hopes of perpetuating the benefit. I think there is something wrong when a black man only likes women that are remotely black (that means they barely even look black). It's sad when a black man doesn't even like African features even though he is of African descent. It's wrong when a man likes African features on non-black women (booty, tits, etc).

@Thedarksecret1 Good points.. it is even sadder when your own father criticizes or doesnt like his child's natural hair. My own father laughs at me and tell me all the time to str8n my nappy hair. Yes, we have alot of issues in the black community that should be talked about...this is sad. It goes beyond just prefering light skin.

But the good and positive thing about this situation is know I know better and I am confident. I think our kinky hair is just as beautiful as any other women. It is unique and makes us stand out. We could actually use it to our advantage if enough of us was confident enough to rock it.

For all the people who are saying there were dark skinned black girls in his video, you are lying. I watched that entire video from beginning to end and I had YET to see a dark skinned woman. This proves the screwed up mindset of black people today and their skin color limitations, because there wasn't a girl any darker than joy in that video.

Oh, and another thing, not all black men are like that. Have listened to Shades by Wale? It's a beautiful song, that states that all african-american skin tones are beautiful. But you didn't mention that, did you? And why does it matter that the women aren't as dark as the singer/artist? That wasn't the point of the song. Also, can you speak for yourself? Not all black people can't accept the color of their skin, maybe you can't, but others probably can, like myself.

Ok, I don't know what video you watched, but I just watched his video to count exactly how many dark-skinned women we're used. At first you were right, there were a lot of light-skinned women, but as the video progressed I saw a lot more darker-skinned women. I counted about 17 (give or take a few) darker-skinned women. That, my dear, is no where near the amount you gave at the beginning of the video. Besides, the choices of the women he was given to appear in the video weren't his fault.
