While I agree it is better to avoid dangerous situations with violent people than to rush headlong into them, given the choice of submitting when cornered or fighting back, I think I'd choose fighting back. Most talking heads are not going to advocate that because of the legal liability involved. "We, the police, recommend that you arm yourselves and shoot back, since we will only come once you are already harmed or dead." Doesn't inspire much confidence, does it?
