@wombatmountain1000 With the most respecful/playful tone I can muster, you haven't driven on snow/ice. Notice how the truck slid sideways down the hill. Pressing the brakes harder will decelerate a vehicle sliding sideways? ABS with 4X4 doesn't work either... steep hill + wet ice = slide. Not even a tree stopped the diesel.
@WildBlueJuander see thats what i like most about youtube , you can always learn a little . my next recommendation was going to be simply jump out of you sliding vehicle and make a run for it , the report it stolen .
it's sheer ice.. no way to avoid slipping.. unless you have some serious studs on your tires.. even then its only a matter of a few degrees of incline before you loose grip and slide....

Don't forget while low gear is essential on the downhill, you need the highest gear possible for getting uphill. High gear = less torque, so less chance of wheels spinning. Also do not floor it!!! Gentle throttle control required.
@LemonProductions09 yes! its a very common stereotype that most...almost all US drive automatic, and dont have a clue on what a stick is.... (not ironic)
you can't stop easily on ice but driving on ice isn't complicated, the ice didn't cause any of this fear and ignorance did. Take @07SuperchargedSS advise
@gluciansorin -when you lose traction on ice, a manual transmission is no better than an auto and just to let you know, even an auto trans you can put in a lower gear.
@kissmyarse1541 Yes, you can put in a lower gear even with an automatic (some discovery), but you can't have the so called "motor break" with automatic, witch cuts power gently like traction control do(by the means of non-automatic clutch function) . I don't wanna hear about semi-automatic sequential gearbox, is rare. You have little experience with manual shift i see.. anyway, nice video, nice winter . Have fun everybody. And yes!! you got it right, whatever!! Oh, mama...
@gluciansorin Actually I learned how to drive with 3 on the tree back in the 60's and manual trans are pretty much I have owned and being a truck driver I have driven in all sorts of weather. But the fact still remains, loose traction on ice going down hill and not much you can do even with a manual trans(I see you don't have much winter driving experience)
love that big chevy or ford pickup spin around backwards let er eat and pull into the side road before anything gets hit lol nothing like a big 4x4 pickup
Are Americans really that stupid? Nobody goes up the hill to stop traffic? Wait, it`s the U.S. Wave your arms and try to stop someone, and probably get shot.
@amethystloveheart Read my comment again. Here, i`ll spell it out for you. Go up the hill, and stop the cars before they start down the slope. How it that dangerous? Perhaps the getting shot comment was a little too close to home. Myself, i wouldn`t walk up the middle of the road. Most danger can be reduced or eliminated with a little common sense.
@89vison89 - where I live it's snow and ice for 6 months of the year. I'm not staying inside that long. It's called winter tires and common sense. See those people that didn't drive on the hill? They didn't crash did they? And don't touch the brakes, use a low gear and steer. Hitting the brakes is what makes you lose control.
@07SuperchargedSS although you have to remember that in some place it only snows once a year. It's choas when it happens. I lived in the northeast and the southeast in places where it rarely snows.
@07SuperchargedSS dude at 1:00 has the idea. though on the brakes you can tell the driver set the parking brake to 2 click increasing the drag of the back tires keeping it pointed straight. cudos driver at 1:00 we salute you
I always wonder while watching these videos why someone always say "why didn't someone warn them". Look the fuck outside before you leave the house, if its icy and snowing STAY THE FUCK HOME ASSHOLE!!
Why didn't some one go to the top of the hill and warn people not to come down?! or block off the road with something!? Only in America is the everyday man and average joe a dimwit! There is like 10 people standing like idiots from the first couple of pile up's at the bottom of the hill watching more and more cars slide down and plow into them and their cars. Go up the fcuking hill and tell people to not drive down!
I hear all of these complaints about studded tires tearing up the pavement, but where were these people when they started letting triple trailer combos on the road, or trailers with 3 axles? I have seen indisputable evidence that high weight vehicles tear up the pavement, but my eyes have never seen evidence of damage from studded tires.

I'm impressed by the guy in the red truck at the END. He used his brain by trying to avoid the other people's cars. Insurance is much cheaper when you're only paying for your own car. I liked how he gave it fuel when he was facing uphill as that DOES help so long as you don't overspin.
Watching this just makes me want a vehicle that can deploy the rear brakes separately. Lucky for me I drive with studded tires and never have these stability issues.
@amokachi31 Good point, but on a pickup the handle is down low where it can't be used expediently, I like the lever up on the console where I can use it.
could there be a mechanism which the driver can adjust the brake distribution during the travel? like in F1?
:P just kidding. if it was possible I think some ppl would really take the benefits of being able to adjusting according to road condition and car load. however most of the drivers would adjust with wrong setups which they would lose their control when they brake.
@Zyworski also being able to use rear brakes properly is a subject to advanced driving skills. and most of the people that we see driving their cars, vans, trucks everyday dont even know basic driving techniques.
what I mean is to have it at your disposal might have benefits but car manufacturers will never produce cars-trucks etc hand brakes so easy to use. I guess.
@niselat studded tires arnt illegal during the appropriate season like the season where something like this would occur maybe you should get a license before you start commenting
@Auszug21 Thank you for your support. Some people fail to realize the it is impossible to safely drive a pickup in the snow without studded tires because there is not enough weight in the back end, and the heavy front end turns those tires into plows. With the front tires shoving the snow and the backs driving the vehicle, spin outs are a dime a dozen without studded tires.
@Zyworski ya i drive a pick up to on flat roads its all fine but once you get an incline thats where it gets trickery turns arnt as bad if you arnt going faster than 15 mph through em depending on how packed the snow is..
but ill actually go to empty parking lots just to have some fun in my truck too plus its a good way to practice reacting to when ya lose control even if it is on purpose =)
@Zyworski i drove a sports car in snow for years with nothing but all season radials. they are not as heavy as pickups and have a lot more power in the rear end. i drove it safely in the snow and i have seen plenty of people in pick ups do the same without studded snow tires. all you need is the ability to drive
@niselat You are denying the evidence of your own eyes, do any of these vehicles look like they are under control, the answer is obviously no. I have over a million miles of driving experience and when the first snow hits if I don't have studded tires on doing 180's is par for the course. Trucks are just too light on the back axle to operate in the ice and snow. I do ok on the flat lands, but once I hit a hill all bets are off.
@niselat You're still not getting it, that F-350 you see sliding down the hill is a 7000 pound vehicle and that weight is not doing any good at all. If I brought my vehicle weight up to 7000 pounds the tires would pop. You can sit there at your computer and denigrate a random sampling of a half dozen drivers as incompetent, but that translates into an insult to all drivers in general. What are the odds of 6 incompetent people all showing up at the same time, answer zero.
@Zyworski far as i can tell the f350 [it think its actually a chevy but im not sure so we will go with f350] is the only one that managed to regain control and pull itself out of the way, all of that weight in a big 4x4 is the best in an ice situation, i have a 8500 lb f250 i drive everyday for work, and my personal vehicle is a 5200 lb f150 in light snow or mud id go with my truck, but in ice or heavy snow the work truck dominates it just busts right through it with all that weight
@sstroh08 That last black truck that I believe was a diesel judging from the black smoke was smart enough to throttle up and spin the tires forward while sliding backwards. I wouldn't call it regaining control, but at least he mitigated the impact. I have friends with 4 x 4's and they are great for churning through the snow, but this is ice and all bets are off. I lost control like this several times during the first snow of the season and promptly switched to studded tires.
@niselat google not every vehicle has 4 wheel drive or all wheel drive then google the freezing temperature of water learning how to drive has nothing to do with ice and snow there is only random luck when it comes to losing control and then learning how to react, best you can do is drive slow and make no sudden changes to minimize your risk of losing control but when it comes down to it you cant control the other drivers
@niselat as for me im a master at driving on pure ice there was a a sudden hard freeze in my hometown a while back it was icy before it even fully got dark and in the morning there was literally a centimeter of ice covering absolutely everything even that gravel roads in the neighhood i lived in was completely frozen and super slick. i then drover 7 miles to school where i went up and down several hills and around a few bends because i lived outside of town off the main hwy so im pro
@Auszug21 wow! SEVEN miles? SEVERAL hills? that makes you a pro? i have driven in blizzards, through tropical storms and fog so dense it caused white out conditions. last spring i caught a glancing blow from a tornado in NC- all in cars
@niselat well considering at the time i have never driver on ice before i thought it was pretty fuckin impressive and though i wouldnt call them tropical driving in storms was the norm for oregon coast so was fog depending on the season and i have driven through death valley in a vehicle with no air conditioning. as for tornadoes well not much i can do there to far inland for my tastes and well it basically never snowed on the coast
@niselat no studed tires or anything just a 4x4 s10 blazer with highway tires then theres all those trips through mountain passes during christmas time to visit family. what kind of experience do you got?
@black98rt Front wheel drive is better than rear, you have weight over your driving wheels. Obviously 4WD is best. Manual transmission is better than auto, you can put it in high gear and also use your clutch to keep the engine just over idle speed. Low torque is better, because it's easier to prevent wheelspin (same reason you keep revs low). A lighter car is better (arguable but true in my experience). Subaru make good cars for winter driving. Big auto rwd pickups are the worst.
bet the tacoma and the fusion where the only ones with good winter tires and the only people smart enough not to lock up their breaks, people do NOT think. Winter tires, studs in the tires are a plus in crap conditions like this, but the people controling what they do is a big part of it
When will people learn? Four wheel drive does not equal four wheel stop! PUMP THE BREAKS!!! PUMP THEM!!!! Either that or don't go out driving when there is ice on the ground.

but ill actually go to empty parking lots just to have some fun in my truck too plus its a good way to practice reacting to when ya lose control even if it is on purpose =)
Auszug21 1 month ago
@Zyworski i drove a sports car in snow for years with nothing but all season radials. they are not as heavy as pickups and have a lot more power in the rear end. i drove it safely in the snow and i have seen plenty of people in pick ups do the same without studded snow tires. all you need is the ability to drive
niselat 1 month ago
@niselat You are denying the evidence of your own eyes, do any of these vehicles look like they are under control, the answer is obviously no. I have over a million miles of driving experience and when the first snow hits if I don't have studded tires on doing 180's is par for the course. Trucks are just too light on the back axle to operate in the ice and snow. I do ok on the flat lands, but once I hit a hill all bets are off.
Zyworski 1 month ago
@Zyworski no i am affirming the evidence of my own eyes. these people don't know how to drive. \
here's an idea: put some weight in the back of the truck. it has this handy dandy bed thing that is perfect for it. and it doesn't destroy the road
niselat 1 month ago
@niselat You're still not getting it, that F-350 you see sliding down the hill is a 7000 pound vehicle and that weight is not doing any good at all. If I brought my vehicle weight up to 7000 pounds the tires would pop. You can sit there at your computer and denigrate a random sampling of a half dozen drivers as incompetent, but that translates into an insult to all drivers in general. What are the odds of 6 incompetent people all showing up at the same time, answer zero.
Zyworski 1 month ago
@Zyworski far as i can tell the f350 [it think its actually a chevy but im not sure so we will go with f350] is the only one that managed to regain control and pull itself out of the way, all of that weight in a big 4x4 is the best in an ice situation, i have a 8500 lb f250 i drive everyday for work, and my personal vehicle is a 5200 lb f150 in light snow or mud id go with my truck, but in ice or heavy snow the work truck dominates it just busts right through it with all that weight
sstroh08 1 month ago
@sstroh08 That last black truck that I believe was a diesel judging from the black smoke was smart enough to throttle up and spin the tires forward while sliding backwards. I wouldn't call it regaining control, but at least he mitigated the impact. I have friends with 4 x 4's and they are great for churning through the snow, but this is ice and all bets are off. I lost control like this several times during the first snow of the season and promptly switched to studded tires.
Zyworski 1 month ago
@Auszug21 google tire stud regulations. they are illegal most of the year.
learn how to drive and you won't need to tear up the pavement
niselat 1 month ago

Auszug21 1 month ago
@Auszug21 wow! SEVEN miles? SEVERAL hills? that makes you a pro? i have driven in blizzards, through tropical storms and fog so dense it caused white out conditions. last spring i caught a glancing blow from a tornado in NC- all in cars
niselat 1 month ago
@niselat well considering at the time i have never driver on ice before i thought it was pretty fuckin impressive and though i wouldnt call them tropical driving in storms was the norm for oregon coast so was fog depending on the season and i have driven through death valley in a vehicle with no air conditioning. as for tornadoes well not much i can do there to far inland for my tastes and well it basically never snowed on the coast

@niselat no studed tires or anything just a 4x4 s10 blazer with highway tires then theres all those trips through mountain passes during christmas time to visit family. what kind of experience do you got?

Nice save at the end from the diesel. But it's funny how some cars handle it ok and some have no traction. Amazing what tires do for you.
black98rt 1 month ago
