I have begun a long hard process of finding one these for around a $1000. I'll consider any size and finish. I prefer the nickle or stainless first. I need the help of the internet(you guys) to accomplish this. So if you know anyone or shop that is selling one please email me. I have looked in gunbroker and other auction site. Like my status so that more people will learn and hopefully partake in this impossible journey.
i have one 4 inch barrel blue production date 1963 approximately 250 rounds thats it havent fired it in over 25 years but has been well cared for the gun has gone up so much in value it makes me not want to shoot it but i think next week take it to the range and shoot a box or two then maybe trade it in for 3 brand new GLOCKS time will tell later......
Which one should i buy, 4inch barrel or 6inch colt python of course. In my country its pretty hard to get permission to carry these kind of guns or any handguns, and i want just one gun no more. It will be for security and for occasional practice shooting. I dont want semi-auto pistol cause i had one in army and it misfired once in practice in situation that would cost my life cause i couldnt shoot. I want it to be easy to handle so im considering very much 4inch version, but does shorter barre

@Skitzo520 This is double action but you can fire it in single action mode as well. hickok has a video up called Three Basic Handgun Types watch it it will clear up any confusion.
@Copglock As a standard, the Colt Python is chambered in .357 Magnum, and Glock 19 & 17 are chambered in 9x19mm Parabellum or 9mm, so yes, this gun is more powerful.
@DamianFinch Sucks, don't it? It's alright. I've been to Australia. Sydney, specifically. You guys have much better weather than we do. Today where I'm at ( South Arkansas) it was 102 degrees Fahrenheit and 70% humidity. It was miserable.
This is the Gun I actually had when I was at the Police Academy. In the old days I guess like other gun nuts, Traded, and traded the Python was just fine. At the time I felt that S&W had a better trigger. I than purchased a S&W model 19 4 inch 357, with target grips, hammer and trigger. The 19 was lighter than the model S&W 29.
When I left the department, they went with a S&W model 59 9mm automatic, prior to that we had to buy our own duty gun. I believe I had a S&W mdl10,Colt python S&W mdl 19
Firing pics on the hammer ore nice, but I do not find them superior to frame mounted pins. The only real advantage they have is ease of replacement...but then they are also easier to damage.
Frame mounted pins also allow for a firing pin block to be part of the gun which greatly increases safety when carrying a revolver...especially if on horseback or an ATV.
hickok45 can i ask you: do you prefer the S&W 686 or the Colt Python for a 357 revolver? and is the python still made? im sure either that or the anaconda was discontinued by colt...
whenever i see a Colt Python i like to think of my grandfather :)i remember when he took me out shooting, that was actually the first centerfire handgun i ever shot! i was probably 12 or 13 at the time as you can imagine shooting a .357 Magnum was kind of a big deal for me. my gosh, what a nice looking revolver, i agree with you on the statement that it's the most beautiful double action ever made. to me it's kind of a classy firearm.
@bazookajoethethird .357 Magnum is more powerful than .45 ACP. I don't see why people care about putting someone down with 'one shot'. If someone is coming at you to harm or kill you, you're not going to shoot them once and wait to see what happens. You're probably going to empty the thing into them.
@Nater245689 True, you would not fire just one shot. But thanks for the info, i knew the 45 is larger than the 357 magnum. I knew the 357 has more energy behind it. I just was not sure on which would actually "stop" someone the easiest.
@bazookajoethethird I would say .357 Magnum, if only slightly. You're looking at 80-110 more foot-pounds with the .357. But I'd much rather carry a semi-auto and shot placement is a lot more important than how hard the bullet hits, so my defensive pistols are .45 ACP or 9mm.
@MahBoiOrMyBoy for real, i was watching a video of a man shooting his M-14 full auto, and some kid told him "nice editing, but everyone knows m-14 can only shoot single fire" i laughed so damn hard.
@MrVelmont56 I'm a little confused with what you said. Reloading is when you take a piece of spent brass, and through a process make it back into shootable ammo.
@MrVelmont56 He uses them to reload. It is more cost affective than to always go out and purchase more ammo. Re-uses the shell casing, replaces the spent primer, adds gun powder and caps it off with a bullet. If he does not have the shell casing ("brass"), he would have to buy those and that is the most expensive part.
Note: He would Re-sizes the brass as it gets slightly stretched out from being used.
What I love about revolvers is the supreme reliability that they present in any situation. No matter how much money a semi-auto pistol costs or how well one is made, the chances of it jamming are still much more likely than a revolver.
hey hickok45, just a thought but it would be pretty cool if you were able to do a vid on the entire colt snake series. I now it would probably be difficult to do, but i suppose its something to think about if you ever get the opportunity to borrow them :)
I have not seen a Colt Python in person, but IMO they are no better looking than a Smith. I think a lot of people (I'm not talking about you Hickok) get hung up by whose name is on it and what its worth, no matter the firearm, revolvers, semi-autos, rifles, shotguns, etc.
4" revolvers are my favorite barrel length. My uncle Steve had a 6" Colt Python with target grips(which I hated). The tolerances were very very tight and the finish looked like they polished the gun to a mirror before blueing it. Finnish was the best I've seen to this day on any firearm.
Hickok45 Great video. Great gun Just a suggestion "Can you do a video on how to property aim a revolver/pistol? You are a great shot with a pistol/revovler.
Hickok AS I said before you are the man...I was brought up a wheel gun man but you talked me into a Glock..I am more comfortable with the full frame glock 22 ..I am so happy with it that only pull the wheel guns out now and then.I brought a glock 22 and got a a lone wolf 9 mm barrel for it installed the extended mag release and slide release as well as installing the trigger bar which is amazing..All of my friends were so scared of Glocks until I did this and now 3 of them own them too..
@runninonempiy Sorry I did not have the room to finish. The point is since my Glock purchase my python and smith 357 were sold..Was not practical to own them all.Still have my Harrington & Richardson 929 6" I cant justify selling it for 300 to replace it with a WAY overpriced s&w 617..That Glock trigger is a little spongy if you will in comparison to my feel, pressure, click feeling of my wheel guns More mechanical if you will.whats your thoughts?
Nice, Smith and Wesson Revolvers aren't exactly pretty, but some of the Taurus stuff looks pretty decent. Though I wouldn't mine having one of these for sure.
Wow Hickok, Another great vid sir! Not quite sure how you handle recoil so well in these firearms. Most people that shoot .357 Magnum, you see a lot of snap... Not with you. Great job.
Hey hickok, i want your advice on something. Should i get a rock river arms ar-15 model a4, or just a traditional bushmaster ar-15? both are affordable for me though i've heard some not so great reviews on the bushmaster, and some pretty nice ones on the rock river arms. I want advice from you know someone who has many more years of experience with firearms than me. thanks in advance.
How do you stand to set outside and shoot in this heat? I can barely make it from the house to the shop without turning into a human tea pot. And its only 100 here. You guys were supposed to have it worse than us...
I heard with extensive shooting(2000+) .357 rounds the python isnt really that good of a shooter, and that when people actually shot it instead of just mounting it in a box on a wall, the action wasnt as smooth as a gp100 or as solid as a 686?
I almost baught me on back in the 70s but the cost was over $600.00 so I had to pass. Wish now that i had came up with the extra money to get one. . well, a little too late now LOL . It is a good revolver. If I remember right . Starsky carried one on The Starskey and Hutch. TV show. But im Old most of your members wont remember that. TV show. JKW.
@swampshot ill take a smith and wesson 686 or 586 over a python any day more durable and smiths has a beautiful finish (like colts) as well... the 686 is built like a tank
@hickok45 Hey hickok45! I'm ex-military (expert marksmen) and currently serving my community again in Pharmacy school. I would love to get your advice on what would be the best home defense weapon, other than my Busse Combat Knife that I currently use. It has to be "cheap" because my college will cost A LOT of money that this "new gov't" doesn't want to loan me. And if you would like, please add me as a friend, because I do not know how to request to add you. Thanks and God bless!!!
were you putting magnum or special rounds through it? because i follow another gun channel where the owner says he wont put anything through but specials since magnum rounds would wear more on the gun and they are apperantly hard to replace and harder to find original parts for.
I could listen to this guy all day.

Will a 357 magnum MOST of the time put someone down in one shot? or would a 44 magnum or 45ACP be more preferable?
bazookajoethethird 7 months ago
@bazookajoethethird .357 Magnum is more powerful than .45 ACP. I don't see why people care about putting someone down with 'one shot'. If someone is coming at you to harm or kill you, you're not going to shoot them once and wait to see what happens. You're probably going to empty the thing into them.
Nater245689 7 months ago
@Nater245689 True, you would not fire just one shot. But thanks for the info, i knew the 45 is larger than the 357 magnum. I knew the 357 has more energy behind it. I just was not sure on which would actually "stop" someone the easiest.
bazookajoethethird 7 months ago
@bazookajoethethird I would say .357 Magnum, if only slightly. You're looking at 80-110 more foot-pounds with the .357. But I'd much rather carry a semi-auto and shot placement is a lot more important than how hard the bullet hits, so my defensive pistols are .45 ACP or 9mm.

Awesome!!!

I'll take a Python over a S&W any day.
swampshot 7 months ago
@swampshot ill take a smith and wesson 686 or 586 over a python any day more durable and smiths has a beautiful finish (like colts) as well... the 686 is built like a tank
TheBassGuitarist1 7 months ago
@TheBassGuitarist1
smith 686 is that bright, newish steel, right? Yep, the smith 686 is very attractive.

@hUriah2nd yes sir

@swampshot I Agree, The smith's are pretty sweet no doubt. I love them also, But after having a python, there is no turning back :)

Thanks and God bless!!!

this piece is just so gorgeous, no doubt
victortsoi052000 7 months ago
were you putting magnum or special rounds through it? because i follow another gun channel where the owner says he wont put anything through but specials since magnum rounds would wear more on the gun and they are apperantly hard to replace and harder to find original parts for.

Colt should go back to making the Python.
