i was channel surfing a few months ago, saw this saw Matt Damon and Robin Williams and thought i'll give it 20 seconds. It was this scene, my hand never went near the remote again apart from to tell me what brilliant film this was.
I love the way he just intelligently ripped the shit out of Matt's character genius then when Matt's character rips the shit out of the NSA classic.
Just because u know of something doesnt mean u experienced it because he's your young and arrogant thats part of wat is being explained here almost like the 2 ppl who disliked the vid they know of this scene, watched it, and couldnt appreciate it for its brilliance and simplicity the level of depth Williams reaches in this one scene needs to be tlked about for many more years his wisdom is something gained from a life of years of love and loss and Damon's character doesnt get it yet brilliant
amaaaazing scene. dont agree with the video description tho ;) wouldnt say his speech is about becoming "more pure". its about perspective. damon's character may know everything ever written in a book but he doesnt have the experience so sean tells him that he doesnt know shit and has no place ripping into people's lives
What really builds this scene up is the very beginning of it, when Matt Damon says an immature sexual joke about the swans, that monologue of Damon's is the clearest of example that yes, he may be a genius, but he's also just a dumb kid. Anf Robin Williams puts him in his place brilliantly.
@jwdub75 There's something special about seeing a comedian doing drama. It's like seeing Charlie Chaplin take off his make up and mustache. A seriousness, a sobirety automatically come through because you're used to see them smile and being clumsy. The same happens with other comedians: Jim Carrey and Bill Murray for example. In the middle of seriousness they can't help being themselves and make a joke or two. It's probably the closest to life. With a great script you get scenes like this one.
everyone's complimenting robin williams. yes he is brilliant in this scene. but it's young ben affleck and matt damon who wrote the screenplay, THAT is brilliant
I think funny people are funny out of defense mechanisim, meaning they have alot of pain deep down, and it comes out through humor, but there's those moments where they have to unload their burdens, it has to come out someway, and for robin williams it came out in this scene
No offense, but the Sistine Chapel is like a Death Metal concert without the Death Metal. It smells like sweaty people packed into a small chapel like a can of sardines. It's still nice to look at, though...if you don't break yo neck.
Got a point. My wording wasn't quite right. The script is great, Robin Williams acting it out makes it powerful. Nonetheless, great scene from a very good film!

No wonder Robin Williams won an Academy Award for his performance in this film. This scene alone made him worthy of the Oscar. Truly brilliant.
