Because I was there when it happened. The tanks were so hot from the explosions that they burst at the seams where the valves were attached. They weren't opened. There were people inside trying to put it out who worked there. Were you there? No you weren't.

@mentor972 oxygen and acetlyne tanks have saftey relief valves on them. Oxygen tanks have rupture discs that release the pressure at 3300 psi which are located on the valves, actylene tanks have Fusible plugs located in the top of the cylinder that melt at a certain temprature, basically prevents violent explosions. All the smaller flames coming from the top of the cylinders are acetlyne tanks with the fusible plugs all melted off thats my 2 cents

judging by your comment i dont think you know much about acetylene. and if one bottle is not closed fully or has a seal gone or if it is leaking and a spark is near it it can ignite and if the tank isnt turned off right away it can become dangerous and you wanna high tail it out asap no use trying to put it out once it starts going.

If you're interested, you should check out the footage from the kuwaiti oil fires in '91. They were to valuable and to destructive to just let them burn themselves out(they would burn for decades).
