The Hologram machine works by projecting 3D pixels in various places from 3-5 sides. There is Depth in the pixels, because they are 3D, so it can place pixels in certain places, but not behind or in front of the places.

Pretty complex machine.

Holograms are a real technology they just dont produce the best pictures and tend to be really expensive technology. Only recently people have found ways to make holorams work in smaller enviornments more accurately.
