As a nuclear engineer, let me say at this time that Mr. Kaku is COMPLETELY wrong about the cause of the accident, as well as the state of the reactors. Even though knowledgeable in his area of study, Kaku has no idea on what he's talking about. I think all the publicity has affected his judgement and his asinine obsession on "making things simple" has clouded his judgement. Some things, like nuclear energy, are not easy to explain and make simple, wake up its the 21st century.

@jimturk1 i never said to discontinue use of or advancement in nuclear tech. it took many years before it made sense to use airplanes for practical use. nuclear technology is thousands of times more destructive then an airplane accident so we should be expected to wait that much longer before trying to use it for something practical or incedents like these occure.

This is pretty shocking and then again my cynical side tells me it isn't. I hope they do engage the military to take care of this situation now. There also has to be a serious revision in disaster situations for nuclear plants because the technology as useful as it is, is obviously risky as hell. It is not a bad thing as long as we find a safer way to use it. There are many other technology's we can use but I do not think we should abandon this fully.
Tiny Germany produces multiple times as much energy with solar panels than Japan did with nuclear. When there are safer, cheaper, more economical and sustainable ways of doing things, why do people consistently throughout history choose the worst possible option? So the decision to not insure was made by 'level-headed, number crunching business oriented folks' (insurance companies and their banker friends) who know where to place their bets. It also means the only way corporations get a nuclear plant built is to convince the government to underwrite it, meaning OUR taxes repair damages when they happen.

Presented with two sides of the coin (Japanese media and outside source) I think for now Japan made the right decision. The nature of the country is civility so of course all the working hands are being invested in helping those who are currently in need. An awareness for the power plant is a momentous matter and this could very well be a tough gamble to make, but those nails that are hanging on could buy some time to recover the missing and evacuate the endangered accordingly.

Renewable energy will take at least 5 to 10 years, plus oil and gas is going to get expensive. ps I think in the UK energy efficiently plus deep wave, clean coal, and with very limit nuclear power is the best option.

personally, i think there are two ways this is gonna end:
1. the people will voice their opinion to their government in a convincing manner and things will actually get done
or
2. the people will just sit and take the bs their government is feeding them, in which case i will not be sorry for them, as stupidity has to be punished.

Japan has no official army, navy or air-force. These structures were banned after WWII and never reconstituted. However, Japan has a 'self-defence' force comprising of around 250,000 personnel in the three services. There are just under 50,000 American soldiers stationed in Japan. The japanese also contribute troops to UN peace-keeping and election monitoring missions - having taken part in 13 such missions to date.

This is pretty shocking and then again my cynical side tells me it isn't. I hope they do engage the military to take care of this situation now. There also has to be a serious revision in disaster situations for nuclear plants because the technology as useful as it is, is obviously risky as hell. It is not a bad thing as long as we find a safer way to use it. There are many other technology's we can use but I do not think we should abandon this fully.

I never knew that nuclear power plants were NOT insurable. So the decision to not insure was made by 'level-headed, number crunching business oriented folks' (insurance companies and their banker friends) who know where to place their bets. That detail alone should be enough to make anyone think twice about nuclear energy. It also means the only way corporations get a nuclear plant built is to convince the government to underwrite it, meaning OUR taxes repair damages when they happen.

Presented with two sides of the coin (Japanese media and outside source) I think for now Japan made the right decision. The nature of the country is civility so of course all the working hands are being invested in helping those who are currently in need. An awareness for the power plant is a momentous matter and this could very well be a tough gamble to make, but those nails that are hanging on could buy some time to recover the missing and evacuate the endangered accordingly.
