It was only later after leaving in South Africa and reading Never a dull moment by Dr Malherbe that I found the whole translation. Now living in USA I listen to this song when I feel homesick.

Helmut Lotti is from Belgium. Therefore making him Flemish. Some Flemish dialects are very close to Afrikaans but there is still a difference in the pronounciation of words. It will also be difficult for an Afrikaner to sing with a Flemish accent because our languages are so alike, it easy to just prounounce the words they way you are use to.
So yes he is not an Afrikaner but he sings just fine in Afrikaans. 100% understandable.

Actually the original song was composed by Septimus Winner during the American Civil War (from Tennessee, USA) - Ellie Rhee. During the Anglo-Boer War one of General Louis Bothas' was a Nicolas de Wet, who later became SA Governor General. His wife Ella de Wet (during the war) wrote the 2 first verses of Sarie Mare to the Ellie Rhee and later added the 3rd verse (adapted from a song sent to her by Ellaline Roos) - Upington Strand. Both were sung for the girls they left behind.

However, I did spend the first 34 years of my life in South Africa and lived in military camps for the first 18 years of my life where the majority of people were Afrikaans speaking. I know that this accent is nothing like anything I have ever heard from Afrikaners, whether they were university professors at Stellenbosch or subsistence farmers in Namaqualand.

I love this song. I can remember learning this in grade three in Australia (a long time ago). Also learnt what I understood to be an English translation. With one small exception, I have forgotten the words but the tune has stayed permanently in my mind. The only line I can recall, along with another friend, is "I long to return to the land I love, far across the veldt" . Obviously different lyrics but would like to find the rest of this version. My home town is on the sides of the Mooirivier in the Ou Transvaal. Now I live in Bangkok, Thailand. I miss Transvaal sooooo much. 44 days untill my feet touches African soil again, and I cannot wait. My heart will always be South African. Thanks for this song. They use to say it is Calvinism, but it is not. Catholic Bavaria and Flanders has the same mentality, and Boers love dining more than Dutch Calvinists.

I really wasn't having a go at the song, just the version. There are others I prefer. This one sounds very much like the one by Jim Reeves, an American who couldn't speak a word of Afrikaans, but tried his best to sing folk songs. Made him a sentimental darling in South Africa for a while.

My served in the Royal Marine Commandos in WW2 - and he can still sing 'Sarie Marais' now (and I've heard him sing it as he takes his dogs for a walk in the morning - he's 83 now).

The pronunciation of the 'i' as in 'bring' 'begin' and 'in' is the giveaway. Afrikaners pronounce it much flatter. Lovely song, though.

Helmut Lotti is from Belgium. Therefore making him Flemish. Some Flemish dialects are very close to Afrikaans but there is still a difference in the pronounciation of words. It will also be difficult for an Afrikaner to sing with a Flemish accent because our languages are so alike, it easy to just prounounce the words they way you are use to.
So yes he is not an Afrikaner but he sings just fine in Afrikaans. 100% understandable.

Actually the original song was composed by Septimus Winner during the American Civil War (from Tennessee, USA) - Ellie Rhee. During the Anglo-Boer War one of General Louis Bothas' was a Nicolas de Wet, who later became SA Governor General. His wife Ella de Wet (during the war) wrote the 2 first verses of Sarie Mare to the Ellie Rhee and later added the 3rd verse (adapted from a song sent to her by Ellaline Roos) - Upington Strand. Both were sung for the girls they left behind.

Also, if you heard a real Dutch accent, you would not think this sounds like a Dutch accent :-)

@Lisll I accept that I am not an expert on Dutch accents. However, I did spend the first 34 years of my life in South Africa and lived in military camps for the first 18 years of my life where the majority of people were Afrikaans speaking. I know that this accent is nothing like anything I have ever heard from Afrikaners, whether they were university professors at Stellenbosch or subsistence farmers in Namaqualand.

Alhoewel ek ’n Engels sprekende Suid Afrikaner is, ek het Suid Afrika verlaat in 1981 en kan seker verkeerd wees. Maar luister who hy die woorde
“wegstuur” (1min) en “lieflingspersoon” (1:47min) sing en laat my weet wat jy dink. Dis nie om te baklei nie; dit is net baie interesant vir my.

I love this song. I can remember learning this in grade three in Australia (a long time ago). Also learnt what I understood to be an English translation. With one small exception, I have forgotten the words but the tune has stayed permanently in my mind. The only line I can recall, along with another friend, is "I long to return to the land I love, far across the veldt" . Obviously different lyrics but would like to find the rest of this version. Can anyone help?

The big difference of the creative, exploring, hard-working European peoples, especially of the Western European races. Boer had a good mix of Hugenots, Dutchmen, Flemings, Germans - their gene pool was differentiated, so despite small population they had the best of all and could survive. They use to say it is Calvinism, but it is not. Catholic Bavaria and Flanders has the same mentality, and Boers love dining more than Dutch Calvinists.

A mix of motivated economic and political refugees: Huguenots from France (40 % of them French Calvinist nobility in exile), Zealandic Dutch farmers and traders, Dutch and German soldiers (militants since Jan van Riebeeck!). @Everzwyn: Daar is 'n betekenisverskil: 'n gunsteling is iemand wat 'n ander se goeie gesindheid geniet, wat in sy guns is (Engels: favourite). Dis nie noodsakelik ook 'n liefling (darling) nie. Nederlandssprekendes noem 'n gunsteling ook 'een favoriet' maar dié term is nie in Afrikaans gebruiklik nie. Dalk is die weglaat van 'favoriet' oorspronklik 'n purisme teenoor Engels.

I really wasn't having a go at the song, just the version. There are others I prefer. This one sounds very much like the one by Jim Reeves, an American who couldn't speak a word of Afrikaans, but tried his best to sing folk songs. Made him a sentimental darling in South Africa for a while.

My served in the Royal Marine Commandos in WW2 - and he can still sing 'Sarie Marais' now (and I've heard him sing it as he takes his dogs for a walk in the morning - he's 83 now).

I lived in Jo'burg for a couple of years in the early 70s so it is a song close to my heart.
Sarie Marias must have been a lovely lady for someone to write this song about her. I am definately in love with her.
