Wakizaka once defeated the Chosunese army of 50,000 using only 1,600 troops previously before this battle which took place in Yongin. The Battle of Yongin was probably the most devastating defeat of the Chosunese troops. However, this sea battle ended Wakizaka's undefeated streak, proving that even an undefeated general can be beat. No wonder why Admiral Yi Soon-Shin is the greatest hero in Korean history!
@sp54584 nope, the 1,600 was a group of the 50,000 man Joseon Jeolla province army + civilian volunteers and they attempt to beseige a castle in Yongin occupied by 600 Japanese. The Japanese in that castle were reinforced by the main Japanese force the next day and with these reinforcements the 1,600 man army of Joseon was defeated.

Yi Soon-Shin is considered one of the greatest military leaders ever, and from what I know, I have to agree. If it hadn't been for infernal court intrigue, the Japanese would never have had a chance to set foot on Korean soil.
If you don't know the history, please don't bullshit! China was the motherland of Korea and Japan. However, Japan was the strongest among the three, Korea was just a small potatoe at that time.
Please tell me wat time? If japan was strong, why did Korea took Tsushima island and forced the japanese to make a peace treaty to not attack korean harbors (Wakou)?
japan only got stronger when they discovered new weapons from foreign countries. before that, they were the weakest. china had invaded korea with their numbers but korea fought them off most of the time. sometimes, the chinese succeeded in invading and the koreans suffered shit. so korea wasn't a potatoe all the time. it had its ups and downs and korea was only weak coz it had a small population
China was the most civilized and strongest among the three. Korean and Japan did not have their own writting system, they used Chinese writting until recently (20th. century). China was the protector of Korea, when Japan invade Hansan of Korea, Korean beg help from China, China sent army tried to protect Korean, but got defeated by Japan. This is the "TRUE" history. Please stop confuse people with your "History according to Korean".
that may have happened at different times. china was only strong coz they had population. Goguryeo was successful of fighting off the chinese with their bows. the chinese wanted to use goguryeo bows but did not know how to make them. see, sometimes they lose, sometimes they win.
By civilized? Are you trying to say that the damage and terror that the Ming army did to us was justified? Are you trying to say that rape and damage to cilivian's property was justified? It is true that Korea asked... asked for help from Ming. And lets not forget the only reason why they even gave help to Joseon was because they were afraid that the Japanese forces would threaten their borders. So in fact your "TRUE history" is complete utter bullshit.
There is no time machine. First korean war was only 600years ago. You can't let first emperor who burned stuffs2000years ago to live again and burn stuffs in later history. PS: Kanji was your offical language before 1956.李朝实录is your own korean chronicle, however, when you can't even read your own history, you ask me to learn history??? LMAO
Afraid of US Invasion, China helped North korea. When buffer zone was establised, our army went home. If you had a brain, tell me why Ming still do it, when he can just by agree with japanese during first negociation. Ming can established a buffer zone even without going to war. purely useless to debate with u. Jackass
Go and research李朝实录in your korean library!!! it is in 文言文. garbage!! Even I give you the link, do you even able to read it???when you can't debated with me, denial method is your way. LOL what a jackass.
LOL what a moron! giant Fu ship福船and in 15 century portugees already trade 佛朗机炮 portugee cannon with Ming. You are not only iliterate, but also stupid and ignorant.
that wouldn't happen, coz if Ming didn't care about Korea, he can just accept Japan's first treaty offer, Korea would be North korea!! The japanese treaty is like this: " to cut japanese occupied land south of Han river to Japan, and return occupied land North of Han river, including Seoul the capital to Korea, and use Korea as a buffer state, and then peace."
Just like North korean propaganda, they purposely played down chinese army's role who did the most fight with US. Is this your people's hobby?? this dramma fantacy your Yi soon shin general use tens of turtle ships against thousands of japnese ship, it shamelessly put our army as shadow. but your own chronicle honestly indicates there were more than 500s giant chinese Fu navy ships armed with portugee cannons around who did the major battles. Even the cannon gun operator are from China ZheJian!
in your李朝实录,the cannon operator in your turtle ships are soldiers from Ming Navy!! when japanese concentrated its force solely attack your commander's ship, it is our admiral with giant size ship dared saild in and try to rescue your General. Not reverse around!! Moron.
are you talking about Qin shi huang di?? How many kanji characters are you able to read?? I明史录 is perfectly preserved, and there even has online version of it out there available. As a bobby, Ming chronicles are my favorite, I am reading it and know it.
enough with your twisted dramma version history! Before China sent in its elite calvary "liao tong tie ji", your king lost all territory and escaped to Chinese border island begging for help! before China sent in firearm troops and cannons from south China, you were dead targets of Japanese guns. learn Kanji and read your own李朝实录,and stop acting like a jerk.
In order to save your pathetic face and so called national pride, you would made up way to much bullshits..japanese and chinese history chronicles about the war are worthless in your eyes, but do you people able read your OWN be trusted chronicle written in Kanji characters??? If you able to read, you would know how bullshit this dramma is!!
koreans.. I don't give a damn about what ever you say about other chinese dynasties. If you ever have concept as SHAME. you wouldn't disgrade MIng. Ming used up all its silver reserves and faced government financial crisis, in order to rescue you out of japanese occupation. You are one of the biggest reason why MIng empire didn't survive the peasant uprising due to little ice age brought natural disasters. if those money were saved, it is enough to raise 8 army to kill Manchu 8 times.
Are you stupid? Do you really think Ming helped out cause they cared for the Koreans? If you understand from the very beginning, which Ming was very aware of, Japan's main intent was to take over China. Korea was to be the foothold to start the conquest. In other words, Korea shielded and took most of the bloodshed. I'm not saying Ming didn't do anything about it, they did help, but don't ignorantly blame the fall of the Chinese empire to the Koreans.
are you purposely been stupid or what?? Learn Kanji and read your own chronicle, and see why your king blame himself so much for the downfall of Ming! and the main thing is To compare with your own ancient chronicle and see how bullshits this dramma is!! Pathetic! a people can't even read his own past, and the record is outthere available.
if Ming didn't care about korea, the Ming emperor can just agree with japanese during first negociation, "To cut japanese occupied lands over south of Han river, and return lands north of Han river to Korean". Korea still can act as a buffer zone like modern day North korea. Once again, To read your own chronicle about that part history written in Kanji!! ignorant+stupid+shameless
Wow, it's like you didn't even read past the first thing I said. If Japan wanted to ultimately take over China, and to first use Korea as a foothold....why would China agree to let Japan have part of Korea, effectively giving Japan a base of operation to take over China. The Chinese knew Japan wanted to get to China, that is why they helped the Koreans later to fend the Japanese off.
Btw dont confuse me with condoning other people saying that the Chinese did nothing and had no repercussions from the Japanese invasion, but you basically trying to counter their remarks by saying how badly Korea hurt China. And that is what I was saying before, it is not Korea's fault the Ming dynasty fell, wouldn't it be the Japanese instead? Don't hate on Korea just cause China helped, and fell cause of it. China did not "sacrifice" itself preserve Korea, but to also preserve China itself.
Honor? It's kinda funny, Honor is only gained by victors. How many Japanese commanders had actualy allowed the Korean Generals like Yi Il to fight with even odds, none at all. Not only that, but the only nval victory they gained in the war was through espienage espionage. I admire the many military feats and advances they used during that era, but they obviously lacked the direction needed for naval combat and the common sense to alter tactics, which the Japanese failed to do.
Well said, and it's also well known that the Japanese tried to hire two Portuguese war ships to aid in the war. I'm not sure why they refused, but it's likely because they wanted to avoid falling under the command of a bunch of admirals who haven't won any battles.
Look, the Koreans were caught off guard and terribly outnumbered by the enemy at the time. Not only that but they had progressed far ahead in close range combat via tactics and weapons. China was even more archaic and didn't do much throuhg most of the war. In fact, the soldiers sent in to aid the Koreans actualy ended up attacking Koreans and Japanese alike in order to gain a greater kill record. They did in the end aid the Koreans, but it was not as heavily needed towards the end of the war.
Let me make it clear. Gun powder was invented in China. There's no opposition for that. The fact is that Koreans at this time used cannons as their main firearms. During the war they had to develop various kinds of cannons. Ming did come to help Koreans but sadly it had not been great help because they didn't take their heart to the best in fighting since it was not their country, rather sometimes they negotiated with Japan at the war.
They did send help, but it was after the redecloration of war. But it was a disaster, they were attacking Korean civilians and even the allied Korean armies at certian areas. It was chaotic, on the other hand though, they did contribute to the last battles and achieved a few victories fighting side by side with the Koreans. It's just a shame their generals were such heartless monsters towards the people they were supposed to help.
In my hometown has this Turtle ship as a model. So many places and things that were present in this era are all there in the city of Yeosu. Very exciting but serious history. This movie is very accurate. All of cannons existed and are in the museum. Don't assume that the war was premitive. Actually, it was quite modern at that time using cannons(Joseon) and guns(Japan).
Fish fuckers VS Korean warriors. more like. i can feel your little jealousy and anger as you watch this video cuz all your ancestors are getting raped and fucked by the righteous warriors of Korea.
vast majority of korean military forces back then (during early-mid to late Joseon dynasty) was of ordinary commoners, mostly farmers. they were conscripted pretty much in this kind of emergency cases, and many had to even make clothes for themselves, or buy them.
the professional army (Gap-sa) was royal military branch that served much as royal guards and for public peace, wearing armors.
officers were generals were professional and thus given the official military equipments.
japanese army was many in part, of commoners too. but with the end of the warring period of japan, the militants and local lords became discontent, and to get rid of this, hideyoshi initiated this 'imjin war'. japan, being unified, so was the miitary.
korea was of course unified, but with confuscious idea so entrenched, the idea to military was not appreciated much at all. apparently korea wasnt militarily ready, even ignoring scholar yool go ii's '100 thousand soldier doctrine'
1. Korean Hanbok was invented right in Korea during 3 kingdom period.
2. Seoul means capitol city, wtf chinese city?
3. Korean Flag was invented by Koreans using the ying yang pholosophy, not necessarily copying.
During the Imjin war all battles were fought on Korea land, and the Japanese mostly fought the Koreans thus it was Korea vs Japan. Ming contribution to the war is nothing compared to Joseon's.

If your going to argue type in english. Chinese soldiers were bad as the Japanese, half the time they wouldnt cooperate with the Korean soldiers and they often looted and raped civilians.
but You must know that China does not want to join this war. But Korea requested that China helps. If Korea can defeat Japan. Why did China joined this war? If the South Korean thought that they have defeated Japan without china helps. This is the ungrateful performance
Who said koreans thought they defeated the japanese without chinese help? Im saying who dedicated themselves more. Why did China join this war? Japan's intentions were to go through korea and go into China. Surley you do know what would have happened then.
I've never watch a Korean series before. (Don't understand the language and don't like reading subtitles.) But I like to watch this one. From one Chinese Canadian to the Korean members: Hats off for a great Korean General that saved both Korean and China.
If Korean's had not defeated Japan in naval combat think of what would have happened. Who are you to defy history? Do you have a profession on this topic? Instead of trolling go study on some history, and learn some proper english while your at it.
Those of you that say China won, and that Korea was weak are wrong. Yi soon shin is one the best admirals of all time. Even Admiral togo from Japan, the successful admiral of the russo-japanese war once stated: "You can compare me to as Nelson of the east, but do not compare me to Yi soon shin of korea, he is too remarkable for anyone" In fact, korea won ALL their naval battles against Japan, and in every case were outnumbered.
LOL. is that why you wanna believe? After seeing this video i can only imagine how angry you are. Observe, as your fish-fucking ancestors are obliterated by the righteous defenders of Korea.
I continually tell myself that intolerance is the worst thing a person can do. You would think that after years of peace between Korea and China would eliminate intolerance but I guess there will always be conceited, nonsensical, and mentally challenged people that would love to hear themselves rambling on of illogical gibberish. If you want respond to this comment then please by all means speak. >_>
Firepowder and stuff was discover in Asia then brought to Europe if u didnt learn ur history...and btw Korean dude Jap soldiers are look so kooler....and yes General Yi was brilliant
the panokson cannons were also very useful in admiral yi's attack. its design allowed it to fire from longer distances. but the plans in itself were genius. Admiral yi is one of the most brilliant minds of his time and a hero.
Korea of the historically disgrace is an aggression be Japanese monkeys. Becomes the monkey of the West and the disgrace which betrays the teacher be guys! Low quality dna
Ironically, a Japanese general in the Sino-Japanese War would use General Yi's plans to defeat the Russians in a major sea battle. Americans must remember that Admirals David Farragut and Chester Nimitz studied General Yi and fought by his battle plans or only slightly developed them.
Cannons didnt even APPEAR in Europe until A Hungarian man had sold a few models he had made to Sultan Mehmet as he conquered Constantinople near the the end of the 14th century. Wanna know what that means....
Oh right.
Asia had it first. For roughly 400 years.
Japan was backwards until it received muskets from Portugal.
Japan had to steal cannons from Pusan in Korea to even Figure out hwo to make them correctly as teh portugese wouldnt sell them cannons.
And you have to learn to read, if you read c-a-r-e-f-u-l-l-y you will read that i haven´t said who was first, i have replied him that this wasn´t the first battle using cannons, and provided an example (europe).
Before Constantinople cannons were used in battle of Crézy(1346)and Reconquista(13th century) in Europe but as i said i didn´t post my comment to say who was first.
By the way you are mixing things, the answer was to the first NAVAL battle using cannons.
The first use of gunpowder with serious effect and in an important battle in europe seems to be in battle of Chioggia between Venetians and Genoese as naval siege engines in 1381.
Korea started the production of gunpowder between 1374-1376 (Choe Mu-Seon) and was first used in a naval battle in the battle of Jinpo (1380) against japanese pirates.
i have no idea of what did the bloody dude said, but it's still so inspirational xD

Jackass
IwantaYBaccount 2 years ago
Go and research李朝实录in your korean library!!! it is in 文言文. garbage!! Even I give you the link, do you even able to read it???when you can't debated with me, denial method is your way. LOL what a jackass.
IwantaYBaccount 2 years ago 3
LOL what a moron! giant Fu ship福船and in 15 century portugees already trade 佛朗机炮 portugee cannon with Ming. You are not only iliterate, but also stupid and ignorant.
IwantaYBaccount 2 years ago 3
that wouldn't happen, coz if Ming didn't care about Korea, he can just accept Japan's first treaty offer, Korea would be North korea!! The japanese treaty is like this: " to cut japanese occupied land south of Han river to Japan, and return occupied land North of Han river, including Seoul the capital to Korea, and use Korea as a buffer state, and then peace."
IwantaYBaccount 2 years ago
Just like North korean propaganda, they purposely played down chinese army's role who did the most fight with US. Is this your people's hobby?? this dramma fantacy your Yi soon shin general use tens of turtle ships against thousands of japnese ship, it shamelessly put our army as shadow. but your own chronicle honestly indicates there were more than 500s giant chinese Fu navy ships armed with portugee cannons around who did the major battles. Even the cannon gun operator are from China ZheJian!
IwantaYBaccount 2 years ago 3
in your李朝实录,the cannon operator in your turtle ships are soldiers from Ming Navy!! when japanese concentrated its force solely attack your commander's ship, it is our admiral with giant size ship dared saild in and try to rescue your General. Not reverse around!! Moron.
IwantaYBaccount 2 years ago
are you talking about Qin shi huang di?? How many kanji characters are you able to read?? I明史录 is perfectly preserved, and there even has online version of it out there available. As a bobby, Ming chronicles are my favorite, I am reading it and know it.
IwantaYBaccount 2 years ago
enough with your twisted dramma version history!
IwantaYBaccount 2 years ago
In order to save your pathetic face and so called national pride, you would made up way to much bullshits..japanese and chinese history chronicles about the war are worthless in your eyes, but do you people able read your OWN be trusted chronicle written in Kanji characters??? If you able to read, you would know how bullshit this dramma is!!
IwantaYBaccount 2 years ago
IwantaYBaccount 2 years ago
Are you stupid? Do you really think Ming helped out cause they cared for the Koreans? If you understand from the very beginning, which Ming was very aware of, Japan's main intent was to take over China. Korea was to be the foothold to start the conquest. In other words, Korea shielded and took most of the bloodshed. I'm not saying Ming didn't do anything about it, they did help, but don't ignorantly blame the fall of the Chinese empire to the Koreans.
pgaru 2 years ago
It's cause of the Koreans that and Yi Sun Shin that the fate of China and Korea did not take a much more tragic turn from the Japanese.
pgaru 2 years ago
are you purposely been stupid or what?? Learn Kanji and read your own chronicle, and see why your king blame himself so much for the downfall of Ming! and the main thing is To compare with your own ancient chronicle and see how bullshits this dramma is!! Pathetic! a people can't even read his own past, and the record is outthere available.
IwantaYBaccount 2 years ago
if Ming didn't care about korea, the Ming emperor can just agree with japanese during first negociation, "To cut japanese occupied lands over south of Han river, and return lands north of Han river to Korean". Korea still can act as a buffer zone like modern day North korea. Once again, To read your own chronicle about that part history written in Kanji!! ignorant+stupid+shameless
IwantaYBaccount 2 years ago
Wow, it's like you didn't even read past the first thing I said. If Japan wanted to ultimately take over China, and to first use Korea as a foothold....why would China agree to let Japan have part of Korea, effectively giving Japan a base of operation to take over China. The Chinese knew Japan wanted to get to China, that is why they helped the Koreans later to fend the Japanese off.
pgaru 2 years ago

I admire the many military feats and advances they used during that era, but they obviously lacked the direction needed for naval combat and the common sense to alter tactics, which the Japanese failed to do.
vguyver2 2 years ago
Well said, and it's also well known that the Japanese tried to hire two Portuguese war ships to aid in the war. I'm not sure why they refused, but it's likely because they wanted to avoid falling under the command of a bunch of admirals who haven't won any battles.

M1A1HA1991 2 years ago
Look, the Koreans were caught off guard and terribly outnumbered by the enemy at the time. Not only that but they had progressed far ahead in close range combat via tactics and weapons. China was even more archaic and didn't do much throuhg most of the war. In fact, the soldiers sent in to aid the Koreans actualy ended up attacking Koreans and Japanese alike in order to gain a greater kill record. They did in the end aid the Koreans, but it was not as heavily needed towards the end of the war.
vguyver2 2 years ago
Let me make it clear. Gun powder was invented in China. There's no opposition for that. The fact is that Koreans at this time used cannons as their main firearms. During the war they had to develop various kinds of cannons. Ming did come to help Koreans but sadly it had not been great help because they didn't take their heart to the best in fighting since it was not their country, rather sometimes they negotiated with Japan at the war.
jookyoungjo 2 years ago

Actually, it was quite modern at that time using cannons(Joseon) and guns(Japan).

it's funny how all japanese wore some sort of armor, but enlisted and officers, while only korean officers wore armor.
hyoboy81 3 years ago
vast majority of korean military forces back then (during early-mid to late Joseon dynasty) was of ordinary commoners, mostly farmers. they were conscripted pretty much in this kind of emergency cases, and many had to even make clothes for themselves, or buy them.
the professional army (Gap-sa) was royal military branch that served much as royal guards and for public peace, wearing armors.
officers were generals were professional and thus given the official military equipments.

japanese army was many in part, of commoners too. but with the end of the warring period of japan, the militants and local lords became discontent, and to get rid of this, hideyoshi initiated this 'imjin war'. japan, being unified, so was the miitary.
korea was of course unified, but with confuscious idea so entrenched, the idea to military was not appreciated much at all. apparently korea wasnt militarily ready, even ignoring scholar yool go ii's '100 thousand soldier doctrine'

It is one of the best tricks ever being pulled of by an outnumbered commander.
In case of the Koreans, distance to the Japanese ships was their ally, since the Japanese wanted to board and fight man to man.
So the Koreans where able to finish them of from a distance. Simple but briliant.

6U4RD1AN 3 years ago
And only for the sake of your formation, Constantinople was conquered in 1453 that is the 15th century, not 14th.
This is not a competition of who used it first.
Don´t be so susceptible and more important don´t insult.
6U4RD1AN 3 years ago
Before Constantinople cannons were used in battle of Crézy(1346)and Reconquista(13th century) in Europe but as i said i didn´t post my comment to say who was first.
By the way you are mixing things, the answer was to the first NAVAL battle using cannons.
6U4RD1AN 3 years ago
The first use of gunpowder with serious effect and in an important battle in europe seems to be in battle of Chioggia between Venetians and Genoese as naval siege engines in 1381.
Korea started the production of gunpowder between 1374-1376 (Choe Mu-Seon) and was first used in a naval battle in the battle of Jinpo (1380) against japanese pirates.
