  • November 1973 he left after performing on the Grand Ole Opry. He walked in as his house was being robbed. He and wife Estelle were shot. Robbers did not find his cash. He had 2000 in chest pocket of overalls, wife had 3000 in her bra and stuffed behind bricks of his chimney was over 20,000 dollars!

  • My mom told me to look up the show Yee Haw. Being the normal skeptical 15 year old, I questioned her on what it was. Stringbean popped up and my mother laughed as I proceeded to tell her how awesome he was.

  • Thanks for clearing that up Ktmiln. I was a kid when all that happened, and that he was stabbed was what I had remembered. Been a long time ago.

  • He was known to carry cash a round with him stashed in the top pocket of his overalls. He was robbed and stabbed to death on his farm in Tennessee.

  • @TruthSeeker606 He and his wife were both shot

  • @TruthSeeker606 String and his Estelle were both shot to death, they were not stabbed.

  • @josh63391 THATS STUPID

  • Great two finger style banjo

  • Ol String had that magical ability & skill to ENTERTAIN us folks who loved his genre of honest-style county music (just like Grandpa Jones). And I do mean "entertain" in the fullest sense of that word .. with a lively pre-thought-out performance guaranteed to work, which invariably combined unsurpassed, down-home fabulous country-type enjoyment, together with his best-in-the -business 5 string pickin'. Man, what a legend !!

  • Damn, this man could play. Way before my time, but he was the "Real McCoy".

  • this my JAM

  • im related to stringbean and the osborne brothers

  • @todd19861 you mean donnie and ozzy?

  • I swear mean no disprespect to a country music icon, but I have a few questions.. did he have those fingers elongated? wow! were those his real eyebrows? why did he spend half of his time with his chording hand off the neck? did he do that in every song? RIP sb..

  • @bmmuir no, that's actually greasepaint put on the ends of his natural eyebrows.

  • @bmmuir Playing with his hand off the neck was his trademark. The banjo is tuned to an open chord, so when he's playing that chord he doesn't need to hold the neck. He could throw in some licks there if he wanted, and he was skilled enough to it, but it was part of his unique showmanship to gesture when he didn't need to hold the neck.

  • Stringbean usually had a real fast picking style. In this video you can see how long his fingers were. Might be part of the reason he was so unique.

  • Many thanks for your reply and info about Stings old Vega banjo. I went to the Nashville Country Music Hall of Fame and it was still all flooded downstairs, I sure hope it didnt get lost in those terrible floods. He seemed to use that one banjo all throughout his long career, Interestingly he based his look from an old Renfro Valley fiddle player named "Slim Miller ' as well as being also inspired by Uncle Dave Macon. Uncle Dave Macon left a Gibson banjo to String when he passed. String is KING

  • .. Stingbean was the greatest of them all bar none, He had it ALL goin and Ive never heard anyone as unique in regard to his incredible controlled flailing banjo style.

... If I had 1% of his talent id be a happy man. When I visited the USA a few months back, I paid homage to his grave at Goodletsville (20 miles outside of Nashville) where he lays beside his sweet wife Estelle. I want to know what ever happened to his beautiful inlaid Vega 9 banjo? Does anyone know?

    LONG LIVE STRING !!!!

  • @oldtimerman59 As far as I know, it is in the Country Music Hall of Fame on loan from Stringbean's family. I've seen pictures of it in there. Personally, I'd like the CMHOF to string it up and let someone qualified to play it every once in a while, so it we can hear it. Good instruments go to waste when they sit for years without being played. Imagine hearing String's old banjo today, that would be awesome.

  • lol i love ole string bean

  • Can't get enough of ol' String! THANKS!
