Woah he is amazing and can play in all types of styles, when I first saw him on ty I saw his classical and thought he couldn't play like this lol, NEVER judge a book by its cover indeed lol
even in this video, he's playing the jazz standards everybody plays. you may be mistaking his "quotes" as playing a written solo -- if you don't know the difference between the two, i suggest you do some more studying.
Grant is missing the point. He does play many of the same tunes for each performance, and even after hearing a few performances he can seem almost a bit "gimmicky". Still, it does not diminish the sheer virtuosity of his playing, nor does it discount his abilities as a musician. The fact that he can go out and play things like Carnival of Venice, Night in Tunisia, etc, over and over again, to packed houses and still leave even the most cynical musicians in awe, is a fact that deserves respect.
I've heard Allen play in Washington DC and he is truly a first class trumpet player as well as a nice guy. A concert hall filled with trumpet player wannabes were dumbfounded when they heard the incredible sounds emminating from his horn at speeds that are truly phenomenal.
