cool tutorial ! quick question...is this a standard sewing machine or a special type? what size needle would be best to use for this? i sew a little but i never thought to use my machine to sew hair...great idea.. ; )
Thank you i am a novice wig and dreadlock maker and a bunch of people (cosplayers) have asked me to make them funky coloured wigs. I couldn't only find one weft in the colour i needed for a project i was working on and it was almost £100 which was out of my price range but i could get the bulk hair in the colour i needed. So it was either make a dreadlock wig buy the expensive hair. Now thanks to your video i can make my own wefts and use the colour hair i want without having to fork out loads.
This is awesome. So what if you buy the hair at length? Like I want to make the wig 18 inches with a 20 inch length of hair....? Im thinking the way you explained it that you have to have double the length like a 20 inch length of hair will roughly turn out to 10 inches?.... o.O
NOTE: I saw that you did not remove the pins before running it through the machine. THIS IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS! If your machine needle hits the pin, it will break and shards of metal will fly out and possibly blind you.
@deck7even I sew everday for a living and often sew through my pins with no issue. I honestly have broken more needles sewing through thick things then going over pins. In general if you need to leave pins in something while sewing, you going to be going pretty slow in the first place. As long as you keep your speed down or even walk it you will not break a needle going over pins that perpendicular to the needle. Chances are if the needle hits the pin it will glance off the side of pin.
@Windofthestar not always... it's rare but it does happen so be careful sewing over pins. i've seen it happen to 2 different people and it's not pretty.
@Windofthestar I've been sewing for 12 years and I can concur with this. It is more problematic if your pins are going into the machine on the y-axis, However you can sew with them on the x-axis, it's a lot more convenient when you are dealing with many layers or delicate fabrics.
I also have to ask about the folding in half. I'm looking up these tutorials since I'd cut my hair long ago, and I used to always have it from hip to knee length [always really healthy too] and I'd kept the 26" tail to donate, but then someone told me I couldn't donate it because of my natural red streaks in it [blk hair with random strands/streaks of fire red] So I figured I might as well make a few wefts of it and use it for cosplay when needed =D But I would rather not lose the length
@ppixies I would advise sewing slowly or walking you machine. If you pin perpendicular to the needle, chances are when/if it hits the pin it will glance off to either side. Don't get me wrong, you can break a needle on pin but you can also break a need by not threading you machine properly, using a wrong needle, or even if you sew something thick.
thanks for the tutorial! i was wondering if you had to sew the hair in the middle or could o sew one side longer than the other. I'm making a clip in pony tail for a wig with some left over wig and it needs to be somewhat long
omg thank you so much now i can make my own clip in extensions with human hair its so much cheaper i was afraid at first but i sew all the time if its all about using a machine you just made my day yay!!
Doesn't this technique result in the two halves having opposite orientation of the cuticles--- resulting in a tangling problem? It was my understanding that if the hair has not been processed to remove cuticles, it is essential that the shafts all be oriented in the same way, the natural way, root end at the top toward the scalp.
Thank you soooo very much for this tutorial. I did this but buy hand a few months ago and it was not that fun, but the hair did come out nice. Thank you for showing how to do this on the sewing machine:)
Do you absolutely have to fold it in HALF? Could you just do it so you have most of the hair on one side, and only a few inches on the other side, and then trim of the few inches of hair on the one side? The longest I can get hair is 48 inches and I'd like to keep it as long as possible. Please let me know. Thanks!
@MusicFeedsYourSoul You could but then your weft is going to be much thinner. Folding it in half adds to the volume of the weft. In my experience if you add too much hair then it slides out when you brush it. Best advice is give it a try! Good luck.
No wig manufacturer would ever do that with pricey virgin hair. They do what is called a beard fold, folding only 1 or 2 inches of hair. It would be throwing out money and it is almost impossible to find real European virgin hair that is longer than 30" which means that no one would ever acquire a long virgin European wig.
I shall try that! Though this is my first time doing this and hopefully I don't screw up too badly. As least I won't be wasting money by buying and screwing up!
OMG I thought this vid was going to be the answer I needed. I bought what I thought were extensions or stitched wefts. But they were bundles of hair w/cording wrapped around the top no stiches. I need to made it a weft, because I cannot return them. The problem w/this method for me is mine are curls that are straight & blunt across the top of the bundle. this method (folding in half & stitching) cannot be done w/the curls because it's curlier on one end not the other. Any suggestions?
I'd do this same method, but instead of stitching at a halfway point, I'd have about an inch or two of the top (less curly) side of the hair on one side of the ribbon, and the rest of the hair on the other side.
Then, before you fold it over, trim off the excess hair, and voila! Curly hair extensions.
Thank you so much 4 sharing this video! I just found a written tutorial for this same thing and was confused on it. Your video has shed some light it for me!!! :)
great tutorial! i have one question-- do you need to reverse to secure the stitch when you start sewing the hair onto the ribbon, or do you just do a full straight stitch without worrying about reversing?
These are awesome instructions!!!! Thank you sooo much !!!
I don't know if you will have an answer for this or not, but have you tried dying the hair that you buy? I am wanting to make some brightly colored extensions for myself so I was curious...I previously used wefted hair from Sally's that said it was 100% human hair but little pieces mixed in it would not dye so i think they lied an it has synthetic mixed in with it =[
You can dye synthetic hair using sharpie markers. If you use hair dye you'll end up running the hair and the color doesn't stick. Thought I would recommend that you buy the extensions in the color you need. Dr. Locks has a very large variety of colors to choose from.
Thank you for this awesome tutorial! I was a little bit scared to try it at first, but they're really easy to make and super secure, no hairs can escape at all :3
Very good technique(weft and teaching style)! this can also be done with tissue paper (sandwich) instead of ribbon/lace and can be disolved in water, later. also, an iron on low setting can be used to press the fold, of better quality synthetic and human hair machine wefts.
I just found 2 bags of bulk hair and was SO disappointed because I had NO idea what I was gonna do with it. This video is great! If what I've learned from you turns out well, more than likely I will not purchase wefted hair again. Bulk is SO much more cheaper. You just may have saved me tons of money. Thank you for that. It also looks as if there may be less shedding, if not any, with your method.
i used this method, even though i had never touched a sewing machine before, but it worked amazingly!! i was so happy. the instructions are thorough, and the deminstration made it perfect!!!!!!
dont glue it, some people do but its soooo much better to sew it in. if u have to much just cut out the bits u dont need, just like if your thinning a real persons hair
lol you've got to have a pretty heavy duty sewing machine for that... my new one is all dainty and might jam up... Did the hair get caught in the bobbin tray or needle?
If you want a Bleach blonde or some dark browns to blacks Sally's Beauty supply carries some extensions for braiding/wefting. If you are looking for a wider variety of colors, try Doctor Locks online. They have the greatest selection on loose braid extension hair (which I'm using here) for a low price and very fast shipping.
Like you said sew a few lines, then on to the side of what you just did. Fold, so the netting is on the outside, and sew down again a few times. Sewing again, of "to the side" will just help keep the hair from being pulled out when brushed or handled.
Yes you can sew over the pins if you wish, or you can take them out. I sewed over them because the hair is hard to keep down with out them, plus it is easier to control the weft as that way.
I"m sure you can do it the same way if you can find loose human hair. I know that there are also some places that sell pre-wefted human too that might be cheaper then buying it bulk. Try Sally's Beauty supply. Good luck!
I just used a some netting like ribbon that I had laying around. I'm sure you could use lace, netting or other sheer ribbons as well in place of this. Hope that helps and good luck!
Can't wait to try this!

Is your method:
sew three lines
sew one line off "to the side".
Then (this is confusing):
Fold in half ( so bottoms of netting meet)
re-sew on or near the line "to the side"?
sew over the pins as well!?
or
fold in half and then sew below all previous lines
aiya! I don't know the basics of sewing machines......=(
OverOrdinary1010 3 years ago
WHAT THE HELL?
diermitch 3 years ago
what? I don't get it...WTH?
OverOrdinary1010 3 years ago
Like you said sew a few lines, then on to the side of what you just did. Fold, so the netting is on the outside, and sew down again a few times. Sewing again, of "to the side" will just help keep the hair from being pulled out when brushed or handled.
Yes you can sew over the pins if you wish, or you can take them out. I sewed over them because the hair is hard to keep down with out them, plus it is easier to control the weft as that way.
Just try a few practice runs.
