It dosen't help that John is only in RWD.. We knocked out his front hubs the day before. He did damn well to get as far as he did in 2WD.. ;) Othre than that it was a great run down from Jervois along the Hay River.
@arielrodrigo1 The reason the Hilux can't pull the 79 out is because of heavy weight of the 79 and the light weigh of the Hilux. Engine power barely ever has anything to do with ability as a recovery vehicle as in low range, there isn't a vehicle in existence that cannot overwhelm the traction available to its wheels in that kind of mud. But, you wouldn't know that because you've probably never off pavement in your Civic.
There is a very old rule in the sand dune country. Don't drive in the mud. Drive around it.

2 things done wrong, took the hole, tried to snatch in reverse.
reverse snatch will more easily break your gears, as all the gears face forward.
suppose if there was no other option, or too long around, the only real issue was the recovery.

At the start of this video, you can hear a guy say something like " yeah just hook it over the tow ball"
That's pretty dumb and potentially lethal.
Never use a tow ball for a recovery point. Not only do they snap off but it weakens the tow ball for towing, causing a trailer crash later on !
Don't use tow balls for recovery !
