When I first watched this at the pics I was frustrated with the end, too much left wanting, however on watching the DVD when it came out you realise what those who have read the books are saying. I just hope somebody in the film industry gets it sorted and stop wasting money on other sequels and trilogies that just cash in on films that were great one off's - this needs more !

They were the ones who butchered the movie with crappy editing and having the Bolvangar and Svalbard scenes switched. AND they were the ones responsible for leaving the movie on a cliffhanger. Perfect casting, wardrobe, special effects everything perfect, EXCEPT - the most important things, screenplay, script and well... direction. The blame seems to fall at the feet of Chris Weitz, not an easy task to adapt books like this, also difficult to remove the more adult themes of the book, but this was a little too simplified. The shorthand in the storytelling was a little too severe. That said, I still enjoyed the film, Blue Richards and Nicole Kidman were as I said - Perfect.
The weird thing is New Line justified cutting the ending out because it was thought it would be too abrupt and most audiences would be alienated by it.
I saw this in the cinema about 5 times. Cinemas in Ireland, with parents bringing their kids IS a commercial audience. And at least 2 of the times when I was walking out at the end, I heard people say, "Yeah it was good... Ended a bit too abruptly."

That is true. I keep trying to imagine what this movie would look like to me if I never read the books and think it would probably make no sense at all. The plot goes too fast and nothing is explained well. It is always very hard to do a movie based on a book, especially if the book is fiction full of new terminology. Movies like LOTR and harry potter need 2 hours min. to make the plot work and they still don't do justice to the books, this just sucks!

When the movie was made, the sequel, The Subtle Knife, was supposed to be released in 2009. I believe the current status is on hold due to low box office income and the recession.
The second movie may not ever be released, so I'd recommend reading the books. Much better anyways.
Yes, ofcourse. And i've read around 50 other fantasy books. Like Raymond E. Feist, Christopher Paolini and all of Tolkiens work. So i think i can make a pretty good personal judgement. :)

A poor telling of a magnificent book. Huge important chunks taken out, and the ending shown wasn`t the right ending of this first of the trilogy. Great disappointment.

I agree with below, there is no consistency with relations and feelings and it doe's not flow right. I am sure the book if brilliant as everyone says but this movie doent do it justice.

HEH no point in comparing a movie with a book... obviously a book is always going to be better.. come on! a book you read it in2- 3 days or if you read it as fast maybe 1 day but there's no way a movie can contain everything a book does.. so quit comparing! reading is one thing and watching a movie is another!!

the only think i really don't like about this movie is the ending .... they cut off the ending that was in the book which is important to the plot of the movie and lyra's character development .. read the book

i wonder if every one who is watching this on youtube went out and bought the movie would that help generate enough money to make another? i've never read the books and using this movie as a judge i soon will... plus as far as the movie goes it is done really well. even if the books never existed this would be a good movie anyways and i would like a sequel.

When the movie was made, the sequel, The Subtle Knife, was supposed to be released in 2009. I believe the current status is on hold due to low box office income and the recession.
The second movie may not ever be released, so I'd recommend reading the books. Much better anyways.

Yes, ofcourse. And i've read around 50 other fantasy books. Like Raymond E. Feist, Christopher Paolini and all of Tolkiens work. So i think i can make a pretty good personal judgement. :)

Movies cannot do justice to books unless the book is 100 pages long.
Anybody who has ever had a daemon will tell you that intercision is a great idea.
There won't be a second movie because this one failed to bring in big bucks.

why do they always have to make the movies for the books so kidish? i mean there is a child sacrifice in the end of the book. i was shocked they let iorek rip off ifours jaw. and there was no suspense at all, there was no figuring it out like in the book, they basically told you the end in the first dialogue. totally horrible movie. the effects were pretty cool, but it totally took a dump on following the book, which was great.

I'm not trying to be hating or anything...but does anyone else agree with me that this movie really doesn't dot the book justice?? I mean COME ONNN the ending of this is horrible, and they just cut out sooo much during this entire movie. I mean it was a very well done people, but it was just totally not like the book and i was very surprised.

I really liked that movie. should have been longer. its like the ending was rushed. But over all. I really liked it. Way better then watching crap like Lady Gagga who is mediocer at best. Great movie. would love to see a part 2.

This film was unknown to me. Not the film, not the book... and even not the "title".
This means, for some reason or another, MARKETING failed (Or just didn't exist !!!)
We ALL know the well maketed films, by title, IF they have been marketed.
No marketing, NO public. It is a easy as that. So then, THAT'S why it was 'No success".
Show a film in your cave and then try to invent a "reason" why it didn't work!???
It has NOTTHING to do with quality. This film is MARVELOUS & GREAT.

I didn't even know that was the ending. At first I thought "Oh, fading to black. Wonder what's going to happen! Maybe a fight?" Then the credits came. -.-'
