Regulators fine American Red Cross, but say blood supply is safe

The FDA alleges the American Red Cross washed half a dozen units of red blood cells with the wrong solution. Although the error did not endanger anyone, the organization was fined $1.7 million for this and other issues. "These are very serious problems, and the American Red Cross is working to address them. But the nation's blood supply is perhaps as safe as it's ever been," said an FDA spokeswoman. The Washington Post (6/10)
