7:38 Samurai Swords? Would it be possible to get review on that one? I'm huge fan of feudal japan war games and it would make me really very happy if you could review that one someday. Plus i think you should do entire episode dedicated on grand scale war games and show each game little bit.
I hope to see episodes dedicated to the various genres within wargaming. I'm especially keen on games like ASL, Combat Commander and Conflict of Heroes. I've not had the opportunity to actual play any of these games, but I want to be sure I pick the "right" one for me when I buy one. Feels like a jungle with so many titles and similiar gameplays. Any good tips and hints for newbies to consider (when buying and/or playing) would be welcome!
You should have said hex games are based on hexagon shared locations, would explain it better.
Nice try on explaining the complexity of war games though! I'd love to see a review of Hammer of the Scots and We The People and some of the other "best known" games of each of the war game genres.
Of course, pronouncing grognard correctly will make you sound gay (unless you're actually speaking French), which you probably don't want to do, while pronouncing it "grog-nard" will make you look like an ass.
Either way you lose, so maybe it's better not to use that silly term at all.
Most English speakers correctly pronounce BlitzKRIEG, so why the "Craig" in this case?
And Totaler is pronounced Toe-toller (as in 'dollar').
So, it's Toe-toller-creeg.
Fallmishagger??? Double LOL.
Again, most English-speakers correctly promounce JAEGERmeister and it's the same pronounciation in FallschirmJAEGER. The first part is pronounced Fahl (similar to 'foul') - sheerm - jaeger. Fahl-sheerm-jaeger.

Btw, that German guy that criticized you on BGG is not me.
I wouldn't go so far as to say that someone who doesn't know how to pronounce a game's title shouldn't be reviewing them. That would be silly.
Oh and "grognard" is pronounced "gronyar". ;-)
What, you don't care?
Neither do I, really. ;-)

Great overview Joe, I look forward to the rest of this series.
You at first referred to "Area Control" games as "Area Impulse" games, was that just a gaff, or is "area impulse" its own style of game?
YoksterMan 2 years ago
Great work Joe, I'm enjoying this series and I hope it goes on long enough to really go into detail about some specific games in each category.
I don't like the term 'Eurogame' either. I am wondering why you use the term 'designer game'.
Thanks, Eric.

Block games took the secret movement of Stratego for a better wargame. Great types of games.

hey im a newbie to wargames i mostly like plastic figures u know where i can get a good game it a lot of plastic figurines
tj11245 2 years ago
I wish you'd actually talked about the games instead of like:
"This has hexes. It's a hex game!"
"This has blocks. It's a block game!"
How does that help anybody know anything about war games?
You talked a little bit about duration (with that month-long game), but no mechanics or strategy or tactics or why you like it.

LOL, this is lesson "2".... relax....
it was an overview of what is out there. Kinda hard to go into each game in detail in 9 min slot...

Hey, Joe I like you.
As a newbie I would be interested in more strategie, hints on how to play an operation type game.
More specifically how do you think when making your strategie.
