there were several Sound kits used in that past. the 303,404,707,808. the 808 is mostly use for hiphop. and the 404 707 are for disco or dance. 303 was pretty much a test one

awesome instrument. the music result is very predictable and linear. maybe you could find a way of using the midi data in a non-linear way, using maxmsp.. and trying to use the data in some generative way.. the sounds of the tr-808, are a bit old-fashioned.. I sugest you to trigger granular synthesis, or sampling or physical modelling for sound design purposes.. otherwise the only thing which you take advantage in relation to a behringer controller is the visual interface which is more appealing

This version is a very stripped down research prototype, so there's no hardware tempo control. You can easily adjust the tempo with software though, and it's easy to add a dedicated knob/slider if you want to build you own version (see the BeatBearing website for link to MAKEzine instructions)
