To all, this is from the tour video. The nerdy thing that ScrabbbledEggz referred to is in-house humor. As for the phasing, every drum corps has it at somepoint or another, or there would be no need for rehearsal. Also, this clip could be from any time during the season, including June :-)
Best show ever! Not sure this show will ever be topped. Wow, 93 Star was incredible. It is what all other shows are measured! Only thing missing from this show was the championship, but we all know who should have won. Seriously wasnt even close when you really think about it.
Mellos carried Stars program in '93... And I know many are too old to recall, but break open the classics and give an ear to 1980 Blue Devils... That horn line was probably the gold standard. I remember watching folks view that show with their mouths open... LOL Peace and Love to all you DCI maniacs
This hornline does not sound like a drum corps.... That is a compliment... No Hornline has had a ringing like this hornline ever and I mean ever since... My gf who knows nothing about drum corps and doesnt even get it will listen to the recording of this sometimes because it sounds that professional.. Its unreal!!!!
I marched Star in 1990, and wish I had been born two years later - just because of this show. Greatest overall show in DCI history in my opinion. This video does a better job demonstrating the high demand of this show than the actual show video does. Working closely with Jim Prime in 90 was eye opening - he's a genius. Donnie Van Doren (the red-head you see warming up the horn line in rehearseal) was a genius tyrant. SUPER demanding - but you knew it would pay off.
Star '90 was no slouch either. Star was head and shoulders above anything happening at the time! I'd say this is in my top 3 best shows of all time, my top 3closers of all time.
For a kickin' closer check out SCV '99. They haul tail and still push a full volume after a demanding, constantly moving show. One of my top 3.
Dude, Star '90 had one of the greatest openings ever! And Donnie van Doren WAS a tyrant, but I still have him in my head when I miss a note, and it paid off... genius, like the Gordon Ramsay of Drum Corps.
Are you kidding?? It was you guys in 1990 that got the whole "High Brass" ball rolling! I have never, EVER, heard a hornline - live or recorded - play chords with the sonority that the intro to Star 90 did. It sounds ethereal, it doesn't sound like brass instruments, it sounds like a huge pipe organ. And as a contra player, I loved the moving contra line near the end of the opener, such wonderful tone and control.
As much as I love BAC, Star is the only other corps I woulda marched.
Donnie Van Doren, or DVD, was the guy you hated but cleaned the musicality to a polish. Just hearing he showed up the night before a practice struck fear in your heart and put a smile on your face. He demanded more out of you than you thought you could ever produce. Dever, CO in '93 was my hell on earth. Two straight days on the buses, show up and go right into a practice. He pounded on us. We were a great brass line because of him IMOP. - Bender
My school's band did it this year, and it was fun and a good a good freshman show for me, but there's only one problem. Whenever someone does this show, it automatically becomes a disappointment because it isn't Star.
OK please dont blast me. I march DCA with the crusaders. and i Have for a few years. we play on Bbs trumpets (i am a trumpeter) I have played bugles before but they were 3 valve with the statesmen. I have to ask how do you play a 2 valve horn when it is missing valve combos for certain notes. Please i am just interested.
Simple. The music is written/keyed to avoid those nasty 2-3 valve combinations, or is simply taken an octave up (more valves, like third and forth, are only for increasing range into the lower registers) - that's why old-school drum corps (single valve/rotor and whatnot) played so damn high. :)
I was in BAC in 2000 and 2001, but auditioned for them in 1999 (woulda made it but I had college classes dammit), back when they still had the King 2V contras, which were what Star used. Nice horns!
Yep. 2 valve bugles all the way. They were actually one of the only corps never to switch to 3 valves. I joined the contra line in 94, and we had to play part of the show using the bugles and part using CC 5-valve tubas. Pretty sweet.
Never used the St Petes, they had rotary valve issues back then and were in BBb. Also, I think we were promoting the Canadian Brass line of instruments, which were all by either Getzen or Willson (euphoniums) at the time I believe. The CB switched to Yamaha in 96 or 97, but we just kept the original line.
94 was the first year of Star of Indiana's Brass Theater. We used the 2-valve contras for Medea and Pines of Rome, and 5-valve CC Canadian Brass tubas (Made by Getzen) for the rest of the show. Sorry, I should have been more specific, 93 was the last year they competed (I assumed everyone knew they were doing Brass Theater from 94 until Blast!). Rather than going off on someone and calling them a liar, just ask for clarification.
What were some other Division 1 corps that never switched from 2-valves? I do apologize as I didn't realize there were other 2-valve stalwarts. I was with Star from 94-97 and never competed in DCI. Even after 15 years, people act like since Star left DCI, it ceased to exist... ;) I think the circuit is cool, but would much rather have played with the Canadian Brass in Lincoln Center than be able to say we beat so-and-so in points at Ypsilanti.
Pioneer was the last all G hornline in DCI Div 1/World Class. I watched them warm up in 2007 and they were still using a few 2 valve DEG baritones. As far as full 2 valve hornlines, I'm sure some smaller corps were still all 2 valve after 1993, but Star was the last DCI finalist to march a full 2 valve hornline.
We did have the G horns in 2007...Those things were beasts. I don't know when Pioneer quit using 2 valve horns, but I do know that we switched to a mixed hornline, with the King instruments. Until then, we had Dynastys.
Cool, thanks for the info! Do you know who manufactured Star's bugles? I thought they were Olds, but I don't remember any manufacturer's marks on the contras. They were just big, heavy and had removable bells ;) Could really belt some sound out of em tho!
Jim Prime is the fuckin man. I've met him a few times and worked under him because he arranges for the rochester crusaders and he comes to help 2 or 3 times a summer and cleans stuff to his liking. very smart, talented and great man
I've already watched this show over 10 times and I'm still not tired of it! That says a lot about Star of Indiana's performance calibur!
Speaking of performance, our marching band (Winston Churchill High School, San Antonio, TX) is doing Medea as the closer for our show this year. Say, you wouldn't happen to know a person named Christopher Retschulte, would you? He also performed in this show and is the percussion instructor over at Churchill.

Are they the full percussion segments? The ones I've seen cut off after about 5 minutes, and then I saw a clip that cut off after 6:49 in the middle of another segment, leading me to believe that there was more.
Yep. That's me. They were having us do a step-off on the down beat of 1. It wasn't uniform what direction you went or step size. Sometimes it was up to us whether to step off or not. It was kind of a new thing then. When I see Crown do it now, they seem to have it much more uniform.
