it was a november evening, 1984, in Phoenix, Az. I was ten years old. Dio was coming, and I had a ticket. The crowd at the Coloseum appeared as a sea of madness at twenty rows from the ceiling, and the drum solo blew my frigging fragile little mind. The crowd was loud, but the drums were louder. It still impresses me today.
the people who aren't drummers haven't the slightest idea what good or bad drumming is even if they think they do by listenning to someone pounding away at mach speed and for you who think Vinnie is not a good drummer the you are obviously an idiot. I've listened to Vinnie for a long time and have seen him live. I find him to be in the upper class of rock drummers along with John Bonham they both have the same force and precision. I have learned alot from these two masters
I like Vinnie on records and live, but not the solos, I like amazing solos, listen to the DIO album angry machines first track, Institutional man, the drums are brilliant¡, maybe this is the reason, a lot of people think that he is not so brilliant, but he is, but sorry... not the solos, have a nice day
@abe1sapien let me tell ya bro, I saw Dio in '84, and his solo was like a violent explosive thunderstorm (without double bass drum). He was playing this same stuff heard here (and like the 84 solo from the Spectrum) and you could feel the pulse of every drum shaking your body's cartilage loose. Let me restate this: you could've felt it if you were dead and burried in a nearby graveyard.
Such an underrated drummer. Vinnie has what i like to call a "Robotic Swing" Feel. He plays very HARD, but never misses the groove. It's uncanny. I am in awe of his style.
To those who think Vinny is a bad drummer go listen to Holy diver and Mob rules!! And one more thing: Since monsters musically like Iommi, Butler and Dio chose him to play with them( and they obviously know a lot more than you smartarses that think you know everything about drums) that's got to mean he's really great!! End of story! Oh, and he also played with John Lennon and a little before he joined Sabbath in 1980, Ozzy asked him to play with him but he turned him down.
@Audioslave3 Here here!! He also played with Rick Derringer and, I believe, recorded the version of his radio hit "Rock and Roll Hoochie Koo. I'd say he has a "nice" resume. As a drummer, Vinny Appice's hands plus Tommy Aldridge's feet = a lifetime of work stylistically for me! Saw Vince w/Dio at the outdoor tent next to the Stone Pony in NJ many moons ago and it was like an avalance of sound; his bass DRUM sound moved my clothing. Vinny does w/1 bass drum what many do with 2.
Vinny is my number one drummer hands down, just keeps a fucking solid beat and is just a heavy solid drummer, i've been playing for a few years now and all my technique is based around his style because that is what suites me the best
@xxmlhedxx Joey Jordison sucks, he have only speed but any ideas and his own technics, he's drumming is very simple. Vinny Appice is one of the best drummers in the world like Ian Paice or Neil Peart.
@banan777666 Joey has some talent, but I think he is more of a death metal drummer rather than a real thrash/heavy metal drummer. JJ gets too much credit, drummers like Vinny, Carmine, Randy Castillo, Nick Menza, Gar Samuelson seriously need more love.
All you ever hear is John Bonham is the greatest blah blah. He is a great drummer, but why doesnt anyone ever mention Vinny or Carmine? Both very underrated
@ACtylerDC Of course and J.H.Bonham is the best drummer ever walked in the planet.Have you ever heard a drummer who plays all kinds and jazz styles even in metal , he is emotional, excelent technique.Remeber the songs(ramble on,dazed and confused, since i've been loving you)
@ 4:57, from his solo on Live Evil........fuckin' love watching and listening to Vinny play....the guy has such groove...biggest influence of mine...so glad that in the 80's he didn't get sucked into that double bass bullshit
I love these white concert toms!!

most concerts these days are like... a fishtank! I saw Vinnie with Dio in 1983, which was like... a hurricane and an erupting volcano, in the ocean!!
Fans of Joey and Travis don't realize how much crazier shit was before their time.
