But we do have freedom in Christ and he has died for us as the sacrifice for our sins, not for our rejection of him. sin didnt go away when you became a Christian. And to fight it you must make war against it, by reading God's word and (through the power of what Jesus has done for us on the cross) fight with every fiber in you the sin that so easily entangles.
Well you guys can spend 24/7 waging war against your own flesh, I'll spend my time finding ways to get the gospel out that Jesus already did if for us. John Piper says not to make war against other people, but, the reformed church in america is making war against people who are single and of low income. The justification for this spiritual violence is that the natural process in life is to grow up and get married, etc. Marriage and family is not a justification for completely unassociating oneself from ministering to single and low income people. @Strefanasha We do not get saved then a magic wand gets waved and all sin and desire goes away. It is a process we all must go through. To say that we allow Christ to fight for us and we do nothing or that for us to fight against sin is against Gods will is crazy. You say to not fight sin, but repent of it. An addict who has repented will still have that addiction thrown at them. The best way to fight is to recognize what leads us into sin, and pray for strength, Fight sin not eachother.

Our flesh will cry out in protest! What Piper is saying is that we must wage war agents the flesh and it's desires. And refuse to make peace with our complacency and indifference to the things that God hates. Piper is one of the most Christ centered people I know. Keep him in context with the rest of his ministry.

@Strefanasha (sorry for the long response) I guess Jesus is ungodly in your point of view. Read Matt. 18:8-9 Or Matt 5:27-29. Compare those verses to these Matt 5:39, John 8:3-11. You see both sides; a Jesus commanding violence towards self sin and a Jesus forgiving and passive towards the sins of others. What's the difference? It is what piper is saying. Violent against your own sins and loving towards others. You need to gain understanding to an old English word too. John Owens wrote a book
@Strefanasha called "Mortification of Sin". To mortify means to "put to death". With that light read Romans 8:13 and Col. 3:15. We are commanded to put to death sin. So, yes you have a right to condemn Piper IF he's putting out "ungodly preaching". Lastly, if you believe Piper is a brother in Christ then deserve more respect then what your throwing out.

John Piper is saying that to avoid sin, we have to intentionally fight our sinful nature, because otherwise we won't overcome our addictions and failures.

HOWEVER, "I love Him enough to try not to give into temptation" is not really love, because that itself means you allow the Devil to come to you but you do not fight back. Isn't John Piper a Calvinist? If so, why would he say that he (a human being) is the only reason he will go to hell? Wouldn't Calvinism argue against that? Saying that God has already decided that he will or will not go to hell?
@GeorgeOwnsx It's our sin (and God's punishment of it, which is just) that causes us to go to hell. Any Calvinist (myself included) would tell you that. Go read Romans 9. (really, the whole book to get the context) Much of what most people think about Calvinists is the result of caricatures rather than what most (there's wackos in every camp) actually believe. Example: I've heard people say that calvinists don't believe in evangelism, and that's just silly... (Romans 10)
@sacausey If you're a Calvinist, wouldn't you believe in irresistible grace? Wouldn't you argue that someone wouldn't be able to sin in such a way that they would go to hell, because that point says that a person cant fall away after being saved? I believe that no man comes to the father except those he draws to himself (to use the words of scripture), but everyone sins in such a way that we all deserve to go to hell! Look at every point (or at least T,U,I, and P) in light of scripture. @dudeokdude go to the Desiring God website, listen to the three sermons called "Killing Sin" in order to hear the sermon in its full context. Piper does not remotely promote that it is our own works that bring righteousness. The obedience that he is speaking of comes from God and God alone.

The justification for this spiritual violence is that the natural process in life is to grow up and get married, etc. Marriage and family is not a justification for completely unassociating oneself from ministering to single and low income people. To say that we allow Christ to fight for us and we do nothing or that for us to fight against sin is against Gods will is crazy. You say to not fight sin, but repent of it. An addict who has repented will still have that addiction thrown at them. The best way to fight is to recognize what leads us into sin, and pray for strength, Fight sin not eachother.

Our flesh will cry out in protest! What Piper is saying is that we must wage war agents the flesh and it's desires. And refuse to make peace with our complacency and indifference to the things that God hates. Piper is one of the most Christ centered people I know. Keep him in context with the rest of his ministry.

You see both sides; a Jesus commanding violence towards self sin and a Jesus forgiving and passive towards the sins of others. What's the difference? It is what piper is saying. Violent against your own sins and loving towards others. You need to gain understanding to an old English word too. John Owens wrote a book

John Piper is saying that to avoid sin, we have to intentionally fight our sinful nature, because otherwise we won't overcome our addictions and failures.

HOWEVER, "I love Him enough to try not to give into temptation" is not really love, because that itself means you allow the Devil to come to you but you do not fight back. Keep in mind that even Jesus slept. I am a Christian and I hate myself every day I go without reaching out to someone for Christ. I KNOW THERE IS A HELL AND THAT IT WILL ONE DAY BE FULL OF THE PEOPLE I FAILED TO REACH OUT TO! Is it physically possible to go out and preach without sleep or food or water? No. Do I wish I didnt have these things so that I could share the Gospel day and night? Yes. My heart breaks every day for the ones who die without Jesus.

This is one of the most sickest, perverted, twisted, attack on the believers Helmet of Salvation and Armor of GOD. Wow. Washerucess, Calvinist, TULIPS and the like never know if they are ever saved even when they may think they are one of the elected they are still not sure so they "perservere" still not knowing if they are. I have a video that exposes this religous spirit and false doctrine for what it is. All those justified by faith in believing Jesus Christ KEEP UR ARMOR ON PLEASE!

IF you really believed that hell was real then you would be out preaching 24/7 with no sleep !!!
if you really look at every sinner as someone who is headed to hell then you would have an adrenaline rush to find out the quickest way to save them
the only problem is NO christian truly believes in hell because they life testifies that they don't
do you look and speak to unsaved people like this?

Isn't John Piper a Calvinist? If so, why would he say that he (a human being) is the only reason he will go to hell? Wouldn't Calvinism argue against that? Saying that God has already decided that he will or will not go to hell?

@GeorgeOwnsx It's our sin (and God's punishment of it, which is just) that causes us to go to hell. Any Calvinist (myself included) would tell you that. Go read Romans 9. (really, the whole book to get the context) Much of what most people think about Calvinists is the result of caricatures rather than what most (there's wackos in every camp) actually believe. Example: I've heard people say that calvinists don't believe in evangelism, and that's just silly... (Romans 10)

@sacausey If you're a Calvinist, wouldn't you believe in irresistible grace? Wouldn't you argue that someone wouldn't be able to sin in such a way that they would go to hell, because that point says that a person cant fall away after being saved? Thanks for the insight though, I have been going back and fourth on Calvinism, and I just cant come to agree with the points, but as of recently, i haven't really wanted to look into it anymore because God doesn't command for us to choose

@GeorgeOwnsx I do believe in irresistible grace. I believe that no man comes to the father except those he draws to himself (to use the words of scripture), but everyone sins in such a way that we all deserve to go to hell! That's what's beautiful about grace! (exclamation points for excitement, not anger) :) What drew me to reformed teaching is the stress on grace. It's amazing. FInd a friend who believes it and talk to them about it...post continued...

@GeorgeOwnsx this is a kind of conversation that is much better suited for a cup of coffee than an online comment space with a 400 something character limit. Wrestle with it a little. Look at every point (or at least T,U,I, and P) in light of scripture. I made fun of it at first, but after taking a fair look at it, I couldn't help but see that God is totally in control, I was dead in my sin and unable to run to him without him first drawing me to himself by his grace. God is awesome!

Wow...Stirs up the emotions, BUT:
Rom 10:4 Christ is our righteousness not our well behaved flesh.
John 15:5 The focus is Christ and abiding in Him to bear much fruit, not self discipline. We can't fix ourselves apart from Christ.
2Cor 12:9 His GRACE is the power to obey Him and what he's called us to.
So, yeah, I enjoy John Piper, but we must be careful to reconcile all ideas, advice, teachings with the Holy Scripture.

@dudeokdude go to the Desiring God website, listen to the three sermons called "Killing Sin" in order to hear the sermon in its full context. Piper does not remotely promote that it is our own works that bring righteousness. The obedience that he is speaking of comes from God and God alone.

@dudeokdude True but I think also we must not take a 6 minute video as a complete picture because this is only a snippet of that sermon. What I take from this is to wage war on our sin. The versus above are made abundant by those who wage war on sin.
